What a brilliant game, I would love to see this expanded on after the jam, I think it would be really fun to play more of. The style fits really well and seeing the character react really adds a good sense of urgency to the game. #

I know it would be a lot more effort to  implement but this could be a great format for a multiplayer game with friends as well, perhaps letting each player decide on a ruleset after every few rounds?

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing.
Hope you enjoyed playing the game. If we get into top 10 the team will surely publish a post jam version.
I do like your multiplayer idea. Do you have any more ideas that we could try?

Developer(+1)

What do you mean if we get to top 10? I want to publish a post jam version regardless 😊

You definitely should anyway, I think a game like this deserves more than 48 hours to be worked on and play tested a bit more as it has a lot of potential.

Btw, did you guys join up as a team to make this game or do you regularly work together? I wonder if you would be interested in collaborating together for future game jams.

Love the art style and music but the gameplay is too slow for me :(

Developer(+2)

The gameplay is very slow, that's true. Just relax I guess :D Thanks for playing

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing.
It is slow in the first level for a reason. We wanted players to get more familiar with the game more as the levels ahead will have more difficult rules.

Submitted(+1)

thanks for your reply, definitely will try again! Maybe I will have a different experience

Submitted(+1)

I have try the game again and I think I won the first round? But afterwards I am unsure about the rules and how to figure it out, I felt very lost going into it. I also found a bug where I won the first round, if I click on the game, the game just breaks and it only show the shape shifter card. Overall I very much enjoy the presentation of the game, I think it is very well made, very smooth, polished, I like the look of the game, but in terms of gameplay, I guess not knowing nor understanding the rules very well, makes it difficult for me to play and continue the game. I wish I am able to play till round 5.  Overall, I love how the game looks but wish the rules system can be easy for players to know and understand I guess. I try looking out for it, but all I see are hmms and most of the time, I am very lost on which colours/numbers I should be

Developer(+1)

Thanks for a detailed review. I do understand the rules can be overwhelming sometimes. Even are testers struggled for a few rules. The bug you mentioned is a rare bug and we have found a proper solution to it as well. Sorry about the issue you had to face. Coming back to rules, we thought of a few different approaches to the rules idea. As we wanted to make the game more towards the theme and away from the traditional card game we thought to hide it. Do you have any suggestion on what can be done more to help the players more?

Submitted (2 edits) (+1)

Thanks for asking and sure thing! I will give you my suggestions that can improve the game overall. I think you can approach this rule thing from a different perspective, remember at the end, the game you want to make is fun for players to play, easy to understand, so players who play the game will have a good time playing,

For most or if not all players, we all know the game revolves around the traditional sense of playing Uno (which means players are going into the game with that understanding), but this time, the player is a  card shapeshifter. I feel the game can be more fast paced a little bit personally, as I had to go through many rounds, for the first round I guess I was just very lucky and did not feel like I have to switch as it wasn't my colour / number and instant win. As I think traditional Uno is a game that takes a very long time to finish, so I think finding a mechanic of some sort to make the game go through quickly will be ideal, either shorter timers. Do implement cards like Skip and Reverse, as this makes the gameplay loop very interesting as you never know when will be the player turn. I don't think you need to add the +2 and +4 cards, as it will prolonged the game (maybe you can and the AI can try to ultimately bomb a player to get him off the game by getting over 21 cards?). I think you can add the card which picks the colour for the next person which (perhaps at a higher chance deliberately targets the player). This is to make the gameplay much more intense, interesting, as traditional Uno is very slow paced. Slow paced is because as the player with many cards and players have to be strategic with their cards, but as a card shapeshifter, I think there's not really much thinking but the rules and trying to survive and not to get picked, so I think of this game mode straying away from traditional uno, to be a much more intense gameplay, to make it fun for players to avoid waiting for other players turn and the game prolonging for long where players do nothing but wait.

I think you can already start the first round with an easy rule already so that the players do not straight away associate the game with traditional Uno. I think the rules can be implemented before the start of each game, I think of Hades when I can pick which perks to make my game harder (like speed running, more enemies) but in this case, the game will pick the rules for me, and at least me as a player I will be aware of this rule, example, any number that is 5 is wildcard (which means can be placed no matter what). If the player dont remember this rule and the traditional Uno rule, they will lose.

You then can scale up the difficulty, by increasing the number of rules. X colour and X number will be wild cards, or the number 6 is equal to 9, the colour red can be used on yellow, to make the game very interesting and fun. You have all sorts of combination that you can randomize or allow the players to choose. Higher level means higher difficulty which means more rules that the player have to keep in mind.

Of course these are just ideas and suggestions which would be pretty neat to include, that your team can bounce of from in terms thinking for the rules of the game. Definitely letting the players know the rules beforehand, rather than finding it out during the game will be so much better, it is the same with any traditional games that like to deviate, we will always set the rules before playing, and not change it in the middle of the game.

Really sorry for the long essays but I do hope it helps and give some insights on how you can further tackle and improve the game! Please do not feel obliged to take my suggestions as well as this is just my experience and how I see the game. Really would love to see this game expand as it has potential to be more than what it is now. It will be cool to see different characters and AI playing the game, maybe some quicker, some slower? Think of ways to throw the player off the mindset of a traditional UNO game and make sure it is fun!

EDIT: You can also include a hidden rule that the players will speak of it, but I think this should be seen as a fun rule, like you can only play red at the end or something ahaha, or some other fun rules that makes the game fun.

Submitted(+1)

This is a super unique concept! It didn't feel very interactive though, perhaps I missed a rule or something? Great game regardless!

Developer

Thanks for playing.
No you didn't miss anything. The game is supposed to be played in the fashion where you don't know the rule but you have to figure it out. How many rules did you play with? There are 5 level with 9+ total rules in the game.

Submitted(+1)

Not the original commenter but my issue was that the first game just takes very long? Like, to win the game presumable I have to wait for the other players to play all their cards? Maybe I just got rotten luck because they kept needing to draw cards, so no way that was happening within half an hour lol.

Developer(+1)

It does happen. There is a reason for the first game to be slightly long, we wanted players to understand the game completely as moving through next levels the game will become more and more difficult.

Submitted(+1)

This game is so well-made—a fun, quick, reaction-based game. Honestly feels like a full release!

Developer

Thanks for playing.
Hope you really enjoyed playing the game. How many rules did you play with? Maybe if we get a good score we might add more things and will release it post jam version.

Very creative take on the theme, I loved it! Uno One has never been so engaging!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing.
The game is surely not UNO but if you know UNO it does help. There are so many other rules to each level.

Submitted(+1)

Incredible game. The dedication behind doing such a polished project in so less time is impressive. Kudos to the team!

Developer

Thanks for playing.
Yes I had an amazing team. This game is really creative. I enjoyed developing this a lot.

Submitted(+1)

Incredible polish, amazing art, such a unique concept. This game gets full marks from me, would be thievery if you didn't place top 10.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing.
I really hope you enjoyed the game. It is indeed a very unique and  creative game. I am super happy with the way the game turned out. My entire team did such an amazing work.

Submitted(+1)

I really liked the game, but I didn't understand it well at first. It's good, good graphics and sounds. Maybe it doesn't entertain me as much because I'm not good at card games and they don't appeal to me much. But good job.

Developer

Thanks for playing.
Hope you enjoyed the game. Yes the game will grow on you as you progress through levels. How many rules did you play?

Submitted

I played 2 rules, i tried to reach more but I did not understand how to advance. But that was my fault, I did not gives the enough time to he game.

Developer(+1)

When you are on the win screen, you have to play again to advance to the next level and get more rules.

Submitted

Thank you. I saw that but I though I had to do something more in the level. Thanks for your answer.

Submitted(+1)

I love love love the idea and the art! I only wish the game weren't Uno so the rules would be a little harder to deduce. Plus after I won the game, the game kept going in the background so my "You Won!" screen turned to "You Lost!" all of a sudden XD

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing.
It is not a UNO game and it has more rules. As you progress to new level new rules are introduced. I understand there a small UI issue of the text not showing "Next Level" on the button instead it says "Play Again" but once you win a game I would request you to click that button to play a new level and check out more rules. There are more than 9+ rules in the entire 5 levels.

Submitted(+1)

This game is really well made! The idea of adding new rules were the right play by the devs here. Can't believe being a card is this stressful.

Developer

Thanks for playing
Haha it is super stressful. Hope you enjoyed. How many rules did you play?

Submitted(+1)

Very polished game! Can be quite hectic as well.

Developer

Thanks for playing.
Yes it becomes stressful if you have 2+ rules. Our play-testers have played a level with 5+ rules. That is super super hectic.

Submitted(+1)

Super fun card game! Pretty stressful playing as a card. There are so many rule sets, it's amazing how much replayability was crammed into such a short amount of time.

Developer

Thanks for playing.
Yes, there are more than 10+ rules in 5 levels. A level with 3+ rules is super difficult as your chances of getting played is way higher.
Did you liked the "Figure out the rules on the go part"? Or do you think we should have show the rule and then added it?

Submitted(+1)

Having to figure out and remember rules while under a time limit to change colour and number is an interesting mechanic for this theme. Well done!

Developer

Thanks for playing.
Yes indeed the game is super creative. I really enjoyed developing and play testing it myself. How many rules did you play?
Try reaching a level with 3+ rules.

Submitted(+1)

super well made game

Developer

Thanks for playing.
Hope you enjoyed playing the game. How many rules did you played?

Submitted(+1)

I'm not sure, I found the rules thing pretty confusing

Developer

You had to find out what the rules of the table are. Each level has a set of new rules.

Submitted(+1)

saw this on stream, was really fun, great job!

Developer

Thanks for playing.
Hope you enjoyed. How many rules did you play?
BTW where can I find the stream?

Submitted(+1)

Super unique idea, and among one of the most polished looking/feeling games I've played thus far. The only thing that got in the way of my fun a bit, was that my first match dragged on so long, and it was only stuck at the basic 2 UNO rules. I really wanted to get to some more interesting ones. However, it's a great game overall. Good job!

Submitted(+1)

I definitely had the same sentiment. The first round, like UNO usually goes, dragged on. So it was both realistic and frustrating! I almost didn't realize there was more complexity to the game before I checked the comments. Going back for a second try for sure.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing.
Yes, indeed the game has a total of 5 amazing levels.

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for playing.
The game isn't a UNO game but if you know UNO it does help. Let me tell you that there are 9+ rules in total of 5 levels.
Rules can be odd/even, Prime, +1 Card ,+2 card ,+4 Card and Same color/Number and many others. Ina level when there are more than 3+ rules it is super difficult to survive as your chances of getting played are higher.

Submitted(+2)

Hi thanks for sharing this on my stream!

It was fun really trying to stretch my brain and figure out what the hidden rules were. It was quite the challenge trying to think on the fly. My favorite part of the game was the HUGE amount of polish. Everything was animated with smooth easings, pleasant SFX abundant, and a sweet color palette.

Simple idea with neat twists and flawless execution. Great work on this!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing.
Yes indeed the game is super creative and I myself am impressed by it. BTW where can I check out your stream?

Hey! Here’s the timestamp’d link to my playthrough of You Got Played! It should be up for a week or so.

Developer

Thanks for sending it to me.
I will surely see your reaction and your feedbacks.

Submitted(+1)

Really fun idea. the game looks and sounds great. the only thing is that since I don't what rules can be added, it's kinda tricky to figure out what they are.

Developer

Thanks for playing.
True and that is what the theme is. In a normal card game you know the rules but here you have to figure out the rules.

Submitted(+1)

Really clever game with great visuals! Only bug I got was, after a round ends, the other ais played their cards despite the game being over. It caused the game to get softlocked after, but it aint a big deal! Good job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing.
Yes, I know. It's a minor bug. It's super creative game. How many rules you got?

Submitted(+1)

mhm! I got 3 total rules. Wonder how many there are,,

Developer(+1)

There are more than 9 which are scattered in a total of 5 levels.

Submitted(+1)

I see I see. Cool!!
