Very interesting idea, really nice visual. Though controlling the spaceship is quite hard.
Good game overall. Well done!

Developer

Thank you for the kind words and for playing! Ship control is indeed hard but I'm glad you still liked the other parts

I like the fact that you have a timer that swaps the roles out. Makes for an interesting spin on space invaders. The overall ship design looks really good! I love how you animated the thrusters for moving in different directions. Great Job!

Developer

Thanks for playing! I'm glad you liked the visuals and concept of the timer, glad you enjoyed!

This has a ton of potential! The idea of flipping between classic asteroids and reverse asteroids is really unique and definitely fun. The speed issue you mention in the description definitely makes it a bit too challenging but it was fun despite that. I'm not sure if you are doing the movement with a rigidbody or another way but if you are using a rigidbody, you could add more drag to it and that would help even though its space and you normally wouldn't have drag. When you have to manually slow it down completely it can make it feel like its hard to control.

I love what you did with the thrusters though. Such a small detail with the animation but its a nice dose of realism that I really liked. Overall fantastic idea and I think with a little bit of extra polish it could be a really great game.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing and I'm very glad you enjoyed! I was using a rigidbody for the movement but got a little muddled with scripts versus traits of the RB. I do plan to develop the game further and so will definitely look into how I can use drag though, thanks for suggesting! I'm glad you appreciate the thrusters look and the game idea as a whole! Thank you again!

Its an adorable game!! Well made!!

Developer

Thank you very much! Glad you liked it

It's a cool twist on the usual concept, and the art is adorable. Getting the hang of controlling the ship takes a bit of time, but once you do, it feels really rewarding. It adds a nice challenge to the game.

It would be great to have some indication of where enemies are since the ship can have a lot of momentum, making it easy to accidentally run into them.

Developer

Thanks for playing and the nice words! Glad you took the time to learn it and find it rewarding! Some kind of indication is something I would have added with more time!

Wow the movement inertia is really present! I couldn't control my spaceship as well as I wanted. But I don't know if it's a bad thing since it gives the feeling you are really floating into space, which fits the game narrative.
I liked the idea! Good job :)

Developer

I'm glad you liked the idea and game! The ship control is indeed a bit off of where I'd really want it, but glad you felt it fit!

Honestly, I was going to leave a large response, but I think that ethyl3517 said a lot of what I was thinking.

This game is overall pretty simple right now, but the "revseral" mechanic is genuinely such an interesting addition to this *kind of game*, that I think it really makes it shine as its own thing.

If you add to it and release another build, then I personally would love to see:
- More explored with the Reversal mechanic (Longer time in each "state", and maybe the player chooses an upgrade or boost that's fitting for each state, so that the player feels excited and better prepared)
- Some kind of "buff" to the "ramming" phase, as currently the ship basically cannot use that ability, as it is almost guaranteed to hit a random laser instead.
- "Infinite space" (just have the map look upon itself). It felt pretty bad to hit a Wall in space. If you don't like the idea of a looping map, then consider adding visual indicators and reasons that the player cannot go farther out.

Thank you for the response and taking the time to play it and comment! Like you have noticed many people have been nice enough to give some of their own ideas on the game and what would be good to be added. Hopefully this means that it's a foundation to be built into something good! I do in fact currently plan on continuing this project post-jam, and some of your ideas are already things I wish were in it, and would be if Id had more time! Thank you again and I'm glad you like the mechanic and vision of the game as a whole!

Super fun. Good difficulty! Keep it up :)

Developer

Thank you for playing it on the stream! Glad you enjoyed!

I like it! unique concept! My only gripe is that Its very difficult to control the ship. I'd give the ship more granular control, as I feel like you can't really execute any plans since you take so long to rotate, start and stop.

Note: I'm not used to playing these types of games, so my opinion might not be valid for everyone.

Developer

Thank you for playing and glad you like it! The player control is definitely something that would have had more work with more time. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

It took a second to understand what was going on, but pretty solid concept and fun game! The only (very minor) bug I encountered was the sound of the engine still playing after dying. A few things I would've like to have is a minimap (which can show you the playable area (maybe instead of a wall, have an outlining area where you are slowed down,  warned and then destroyed) or some indicator of where the enemy players are relative to you, powerups (whether that be for speed, shields, or firepower), a health bar (so you don't just get one-shot), obstacles (like an asteroid belt to hide/navigate in), having firing go towards the mouse rather than the front (making aiming easier), have the laser beams fired travel with the velocity of the player in account, have ships that can take more and less hits worth an equivalent amount of points

another thing to make the game make more sense would be to create a reason why the enemies can't fire at you at times and why you can't fire at them at times (maybe the player's shields against lasers only work for a certain amount of time or there's a special emp that stops them from firing, idk)

Developer

Wow thank you, that's a heck of lot of feedback! Lots of the things you mention are all things I'd have liked to implement if I had more time. Thank you so much for playing and taking all the time to write your genuine ideas and feedback for me. Glad you found the game fun!

A fun arcade game with an interesting take on the theme. I felt like the controls could be a bit more responsive but that's probably up to personal taste, I'm guessing some others would love it the way it is now since many space shooter games control exactly like this. Also, I think it would make more sense for the enemy ships to be running away from you when it's your turn to shoot, which would add an interesting dynamic to the game (chasing them down gives you more points but makes it harder to survive when the roles switch if you don't destroy all the ships). Really solid entry!

Developer

Thank you for the kind words! The idea came up already about enemies backing off when roles are reversed and I agree that the idea is great! Thanks for taking the time to play and write your genuine ideas/opinions. Glad you thought it was good!

nice take to the theme! i think the map a little too big and sometimes i couldnt find the enemies. oddly enough, i  didnt crash into any of them when i was flying too fast. did you did tat feature?

Developer

I'm glad you liked the theming! I think you just got lucky when travelling fast, I haven't changed any features yet

Reminds me of the first game I ever made for a jam almost 3 years ago :) I like the realistic acceleration-based spaceship movement. Very nice touch with the particle trail - a good way to tell the player where the ship is going. Agree with others that the role switch happens a bit too rarely - I can easily imagine a player who never survives long enough to even reach the switch :) Filling the space with a bit more stuff would be cool. Also I tried accelerating like crazy and quickly hit an invisible wall, which felt a bit sad - I’m in space, after all!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for both playing and giving very legitimate feedback! I totally agree with you on all fronts and am glad you liked the other parts of it too. If I'd had more time I'd have gotten to some of these mechanics and improved them; adding map barriers was a quicker fix than changer some of the other systems in play to account for an infinite map. Thanks for the time and effort to play and review!

Creative idea have the player and enemy's swap roles actively during gameplay and the fact that there are thrusters for each movement option is a nice touch. One piece of feedback I have is that the space feels a bit empty. The music is also great overall well done. :D

Developer

Thank you, glad you liked both the idea and the thrusters! The space is certainly somewhat empty and would have been more filled if I had more time. Thank you!

Enjoyed my time with the game. Pixel art is pretty good. Well done.

Developer

Thank you, very glad you enjoyed it!

Hi, my fellow space enjoyer, this is a nifty idea to swap roles regarding prey and predator. The only thing is that I think you should be able to ram enemies and not die when you're in a predator mode, I believe it would've felt much better. But overall a great game. I'll be pleased if you've checked our space game).

Developer

Hi, thanks for playing and glad you liked the idea! As it turns out you are able to ram into enemies in my game during that mode, but it is however difficult to do so. It's about timing it between enemy shots and is certainly a risk-reward (worth 5 points!)

Submitted(+1)

Neat idea, the control system is not always responsive the game itself is enjoyable :)

Developer(+1)

Glad you liked it, thanks for playing!

Fun idea, very nice looking! Spaceship was a bit fiddly to control but I loved the details of the thrusters and the pixel art style in general

Developer

Thank you, glad you liked it! Happy to have people like my first proper pixel art-ing

Simple and polished. Maybe add some UI indicating where the enemies gonna come from.

Developer

Thanks for playing! Some sort of indication is definitely something I'd have done with more time
