Really pretty art style and interesting theme, but couldn't progress more because of the grappling hook. Certainly an interesting idea that can help a lot, just think it might be best to have some more work on it.

Submitted

I like the art style here - the red trees are nice and creepy and the main menu with the title made out of the environment is really cool.

The grappling hook is a good mechanic and felt good to use when I got it to work but it was pretty finnicky so I spent more time grappling with the controls, haha.  I ended up stuck at the bottom of the first level after only getting one key.  Sorry I didn't play more because I wanted to see what the faustian bargain stuff was but I just couldn't get the hang of the grappling.

Submitted

Awesome atmospheric feel. I love the art style and the ambiance the audio provides. Nice entry! I think I found the grappling hook a little difficult to use but that's probably me needing to get better at the game lol.

Submitted

Soaked in atmosphere.  Actually reminded me of an old old game called "flashback".  That's a serious compliment :)

Submitted

That grapple hook was sweet. I wish I could just pull myself up with it without having to time a jump or anything. But it was very satisfying to get right. Your player character sprite and gun animations were absolutely awesome. Well done.

Really nice game!! Graphics are top notch and the grappling feature was awesome! It took me a second to understand using it at the right time to propel myself up but once I did it was pretty fun. Like others mentioned it might be worth increasing the usage time to be more forgiving! Unfortunately I couldn't figure out how to collect sap but did make a deal or two and found 1 key!!

Initially I could see no way to start the game on my screen, tried clicking every key and mouse click but nothing.  Luckily some comments mentioned UI scaling so I zoomed out my browser and could see the menu buttons!! My audio cut out randomly about 5 minutes in but otherwise a really well polished game with great art, atmosphere and mechanics!!

Thank you! I'm glad you liked the grappling feature :) It definitely requires some specific timing, but can be really fun to use to vault over things instead of swinging like you might expect at first.

I fixed the screen sizing issue on itch side, and gonna take the advice of another user to fix the scaling in Godot next time around :) Thanks for giving our game a try!

I liked the atmosphere of the game and not knowing what was below me always made me dread falling down. It is a negative feeling that is hard to stomach but I like the fact that the game makes me feel that way as I am falling into the unknown!

I would suggest adding some sound effects to make the game feel more alive. It should nicely complement the overall feel of the game.

Developer

Thanks! I'm glad you liked that feeling haha.

Sound effects are such a great idea! I was noodling around with a shotgun sound, but couldn't find anything satisfying enough. Definitely want to spend more time on the sound design if we continue to iterate on this game :)

really cool idea, as some other people have mention the grappling was a little difficult, I'm not sure exactly how it worked, sometimes it seemed to pull hard an other times it was barely slowing my fall... maybe having aa little bit of a tut on how to use it would help?

over all I was really impressed with the atmosphere and quality of the game well done

Developer

Thank you for giving our game a try!

The grappling system definitely takes some getting used to. A tutorial / training area would definitely be a good help to ease people into the system.

Very difficult game, the grappling hook system was hard to control and I stayed stuck at the bottom of the level for a while. The ambience is good and I personally like the character's design. Decent entry!

Thanks for checking it out!

Very atmospheric, very interesting! It seems as though you forgot to turn on scaling in the project settings. You can do this by going to Project Settings -> Window -> Stretch -> 2D for mode and Keep Width or Keep or Keep Height for aspect. This will ensure your controls are on the screen at all times and that the game is visible regardless of the size the player is playing it at, albeit sometimes it shrinks the actual game look and feel (usually that would mean the resolution in Window -> Size -> Width and Height is too large, so shrink those and increase the test size below it for a better view of what your players might see).

Overall though, very interesting! Hook mechanics like this are really hard to pull off, to the point that the people who made Bionic Commando, one of my all-time favorite games, admitted they completely hacked the code for it so badly that they never wanted to show or look at that code again! :D Loved the atmosphere and the depth.

Developer(+1)

That's a super good tip - We'll definitely add that into the project when we get a chance :)

I'm glad you found the game interesting, and yes it was a very difficult system to pull off and I'm so happy that Adam took a swing at it!

Hi, I'm one of the developers on this game. Bionic Commando was a really formative game for me growing up so I wanted to incorporate some sort of grappling hook mechanic. They are indeed really tricky, and I look forward to refining it more over time. Thank you so much for playing!

Submitted

Same! Regarding Bionic Commando, of course. 🤣 I was really glad to see this type of thing implemented!

Really nice , Great atmosphere , great Graphics

Developer

Thank you!! I'm glad you liked it :)

Really nice atmosphere but I had hard time using hook

Developer

Thanks for playing the game and trying it out! Any thoughts on how we could improve the hook?

Submitted

Great atmosphere, but is it normal that the hook only lasts 1 second ? I find it frustrating to be honest ^^

Developer

Good to know! We can definitely tune the grappling hook params some more once the voting period is complete. We'll keep this in mind :)

Hiya this was a super atmospheric game with a lot of depth.  It took me a bit to realize that I was modifying my character to be worse in exchange for sap at the red trees and then gaining power at the green trees in exchange for sap.  Great graphics and atmosphere!  I loved the sparse but eerie soundscape.    Did run into a few glitches, once I got shunted into a grey void, I also got 3 keys but then they disappeared and I didn't know where to go from there.  Still this was a super expansive world with a wonderful atmosphere I think one of the stronger entries this Jam well done!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for taking a pass at the game!!

I'm excited you played long enough to collect all three keys, and yes sadly there is a known bug where the boss isn't activated upon collecting the three keys. Once you collect all three, revisit the center room (where you dropped down into at the beginning) and you'll see the keys hovering around the boss. The idea is that you can interact with the boss to begin the fight at that point, before the boss has fully powered up. Unfortunately we weren't able to submit the bugfix in time. The boss fight will start regardless once the boss reaches 100% power (which happens after about 15 minutes).

Unfortunately, I am unable to get past your title screen.  Any key I press does not seem to do anything.  Clicking with the mouse doesn't either.

Developer

:( I'm sorry to hear that. Were you able to see the menu in the bottom right? If you didn't see it, I wonder if it was a problem with the window size being too large in Itch. If you zoom out in your browser, you might be able to see the Start, Options, Credits, and Quit buttons in the bottom right.

Let me know if that works :)

Submitted

Yeah, I think that was it.  The browser game window is set to such a large size the menu was completely off of my screen.  Once I found it I was able to play.

I like the artwork and atmosphere, but I found controlling the character was a bit too tricky for me.  That grappling hook is going to take a lot of practice to get used to.

Developer

I'll adjust the window size so that others don't run into the same issue, thanks for letting me know.

I'm glad you liked the visuals and sound, and I hear you on controlling the character. Do you have any concrete suggestions that might make it a bit easier or smoother to control? If you don't, I'd love to hear more about what particular issues you ran into while controlling the character and how it felt.

Submitted

Well, it could just be that I'm not familiar with this sort of game, but having to use two hands at once to control two different things (character and weapons) is confusing.  Especially when one hand is on the keyboard and the other is the mouse.  It's also hard to move when the grappling hook keeps detaching (I think because you're moving too slowly).  If the hook always stayed attached until you released the mouse button, I think that would help.

(1 edit)

The grappling hook definitely needs more refinement. The concept was to allow the player to focus on upgrading the grappling hook to make it more and more useful, but the time it attaches at the start of the game is too short, and we'll definitely use that feedback to improve the game moving forward. Thank you so much for playing, and for your feedback!
