In what way does your game fit the theme?
In HexIsles the hexagons can get to places together, they couldn't reach alone (e. g. by stacking or combining different abilities). They also shield each other from loneliness, which would cause them to petrify.

Did you write all the code yourself and made all the assets from scratch?
No, I used a free LowPoly Water Asset by Ebru Dogan from the Unity Asset Store and the font Josefin Sans from Google Fonts.

This is probably the best puzzle game I've played yet in the jam. I like how simple but effective the mechanics are, and they incorporate very nicely into the theme. The graphics are very easy on the eyes and make it easier to focus on the actual puzzle. And the audio design is seriously top-notch, with very satisfying, and responsive, effects with some well-suited music.

Great work, I think this could polish up into a very nice puzzler if you choose to continue work on it!

Thank you for the nice words!
I want to continue working on this game since I like this project a lot and I am learning a lot working on it.
I really believe that it has some potential, so it's nice to hear so many people are having fun with it as well!

really cool game, good controls, well designed, nice.. though i got stuck at the very first level where both pieces need to reach the top of the mountain. i couldnt figure out how to get both atop... voted none the less.. have a good day

Developer

Ty for playing! I'm glad you liked it. Probably should have explained with a sign that only one hex needs to reach the flag every time. My bad!

Awesome game! I got stuck a few levels in

Developer(+1)

Ty! Gonna had a some better hints soon and add more levels explaining the mechanics to prevent that.

Absolutely great game. The concept is good, the controls are nice and polished, and even the levels are great, and there are many of them. Impressive that this was all done in only one week, and by one guy. Small things like the main menu, the level selection, the undo button and the camera movement just made it a joy to play through all these well designed levels.

I think it was a little hard to see what hexagon i had selected, and the orange ones are a bit hard to tell from the red ones though. Maybe you could make their colour a little more different, in a post-jam release?

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I'm happy you liked it!
That the colors are hard to tell apart, probably stems from a bug I've already fixed for the post-jam version, where the color of orange and yellow hexes defaults to red on undo and only the emission color stays the same, which results in this slightly lighter tone of red. I've also tweaked the colors a bit, trying to make everything a bit brighter and distinct.

The puzles are amazing ! it so cool how you play with the hexagons

Ty for playing! I'm glad you liked the game!

Very fun and interesting puzzle game mechanic, which could probably translate into a lot of very unique levels if you’re ever interested in making it a full game.

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you for playing! I am in fact interested! I'm focusing mainly on building for mobile rn, then I'm gonna clean up some stuff and add features and levels! Got lots of ideas! You can see my progress on Trello if you wanna check it out.

Really clever mechanic. Seems like the sort of stuff I played in a tabletop game when I was a kid.

Level 6 was real hard for me, but that's good.

Well done!

Developer

Ty for playing! What game does it remind you off? I can't think of what you could mean, would be cool as inspiration.

Submitted(+1)

There isn't a specific one, just the general feel of it and how I approached the game gave me a nostalgic feeling :D

Developer

Ok cool! :)

Great story, I was touched :D

Developer

Thanks! Always like a geometrical story!

Nice idea and good level design, just a bit confused on the mechanics of different blocks function but still not a bit problem to pass levels

Submitted(+1)

Really striking style and fantastic level of polish. I do wish that I didn't have to click on the piece to move each time i make a move.

Developer(+1)

Ty! I had you automatically reselecting the piece you moved at some point but I found accidentally making them stack when trying to select another piece actually more annoying. I plan to make it an option in the post-jam version.

Really cool game! Really simple mechanics but the level design makes it very interesting and challenging. Music and sound effects are top notch, only that the game over and level complete jingle both play at the same time when completing a level with 0 turns left (I see you fixed it in a future version). Simple visuals, but the simplicity here fits really well.

Only thing I would love to see is how high the adjacent tiles are and how high the selected hexagon can jump. Overall, a really great entry!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the review! I'm glad you liked the game!
I'm still thinking of a way to show the size of the tiles without adding some obnoxious UI. Maybe I can tweak the levels, that you always have some other sized tiles for reference nearby. If you have any other idea let me now. Apart from that, the jump height should be pretty obvious from the color of the hex ( red +1, orange +2, yellow +3).

Submitted(+1)

Scratch the part of the jump height on my part, that is indeed pretty obvious :).

As for showing the size of tiles, that's already a good idea! A really inelegant way would be to just add +x on every adjacent tile, maybe flat on the tile itself? I honestly can't think of any other way without making the game lose it's aesthetic.

love the atmosphere, the sound and music is great.  The dialogue with the signs are a nice touch. Great job!

Submitted(+1)

How even? Why am I asking, you documented it all on Trello. Amazing game with a really unique spin on the theme! Super smooth super cool game :)

Developer

Thank you so much! Now u mentioned it i had to update my whole Trello board. I hope this motivates me to keep going lmao.

A well-designed and polished game. Trial and error are a pretty bad strategy in this game and thinking is encouraged. Level 13 is my favorite, very simple but still makes you think. Visuals, music and SFX are all well-done and fit the game well. Good job!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thank you! 13 is one of my favorites as well! I'm glad you liked (although I just played your game and your lvl design is on a whole other level (no pun intended))

Rly love the design!

This could be a boardgame! Well done! Honestly I was pretty stumped at the one with the flag 4 tiles high.

Developer

Thanks for playing!
I just recorded a Walkthrough in case you want to try again. I believe the level you mean is LVL4.

Submitted(+1)

That was very enjoyable. The only small thing I can mention is that I wish I didn't have to reselect the same hexagon repeatedly when I wanted to make several moves with it, but that's a very minor complaint in an otherwise great game.

Developer (1 edit)

TY! I had them automatically reselect at some point during the week, but I actually thought that was more annoying bc selecting the hex next to the one you just moved made it jump on top. That was before I implemented the undo button though, so you also had to restart the level then which probably made it more frustrating. Maybe I'll add an option for that post-jam.

Submitted(+1)

Maybe single click to select, double click to move, or something similar. However you go forward with this, I'd love to play more of it.

Submitted(+1)

Both the idea and the execution are amazing. Also the sound effects are very satisfying, which is important. Great game!

Developer

Thanks! I'm glad you liked the SFX. We added them just before the deadline and I am pretty pleased with how they turned out although they are literally just some synthesized notes and some chess pieces moving.
