A jam submission

Stupid BobView game page

The main character acts by himself, but he isn't smart enough so you will need to keep pushing him, silly yet fun!

nice!good job!

Developer

Thank you for playing and commenting!

When I tried to play, the boxes would follow my mouse at an incredibly slow rate, making it unplayable. I haven't rated it since it seems most people could play just fine and it wouldn't fair to rate based on the 10 seconds I can play. Looks fun though :'(

Developer (1 edit)

Oh! What a bummer. I'm not sure what's the issue with that ...

Thank you for checking it out nonetheless.

Bob is so stupid!    Thumbs up.  Good job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you!!

Really interesting ideas! Really lovely concept and great execution one thing I'd add next is UI just to give a bit more a clearer understanding of what can be done when playing and maybe over the top of select-able objects to make them stand out more :) Otherwise great job!

Developer

Thank you very much for playing and commenting!
That's a great idea that I haven't thought of before! Will definitely look into implementing that if we did a post-jam version.

I like the general gameplay and artstyle! All in all a great little jam game. I know you didn't have much time to make this, but here are a couple of things I would want:

- Mute button

- SFX

- Better feedback when you die. Maybe ragdoll physics and collision on the sawblades

- A minitutorial such as popup text telling you what you need to do

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much for playing and commenting! We will definitely implement your suggestions if we did a post-jam version.

Good job. Very fun and challenging game.

I played this game in this video here (13:20):

It's a cool idea and fits the theme well as you don't really control the main character and can get pretty chaotic. Trying to move the character where I wanted to can be pretty frustating sometimes though. Neat music and presentation, good job overall!

Developer

Thank you very much for playing and leaving such a nice comment!
Yeah, the character movement definitely could be improved ...

cool prototype, but its very obvious you ran out of time.

here are my gripes with the game:
1. no tutorial, tho i do get that you ran out of time, at least some minor in-game text would have been nice.

2. no planning ahead. you cant simply go ahead and place boxes where you think bob would land, you have to wait for bob and then reactively put boxes where  he think he might need them. It would be nice to be able to have control of the camera and be able to save the world state even if bob dies. on that note,

3. bob is unpredictable. sometimes he flies through the level all by himself, and sometimes he dies to a random hazard half way through. this makes protecting him 100x times more difficult. it would be better if, given the exact same inputs / world state, that bob made it through / died to the same hazard every time.

4. hazards have weird hitboxes. especially near the waterfall, bob randomly dies on the same platform everytime. it looks like he's dying in thin air for no reason. also, he can die by not going down the pit and going off screen to the right; he dies to nothing.

5. lack of checkpoints. especially when you go to a new screen, you should have checkpoints.

Honestly, by biggest gripe is #3 and #4. If i cant predict whats going to happen, I'm basically playing a slot machine with extra inputs.

The art was lovely and for a first time game jammer, you guys did a really good job. Keep up the good work!

This is by far the best, more helpful, more detailed comment we ever got. Thank you very very much for spending the time to read the game page and the frustrating time it takes to play the game enough to analyze it in such a good way. You have provided very helpful game design comments. We will definitely take all of them into consideration if we ever did a post-jam version, which I think we really should do after reading your comment!

Submitted(+1)

you guys should totally do that! id totally play the post jam version!

Submitted(+1)

Haha, this is a really charming and fun game! I like how it feels, even though its very chaotic! Super fun game here, great work!

I'd also really appreciate feedback on my game (If you want) https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-2020/rate/695512

Developer

I already tried your game on-stream and gave feedback! You were around and you even thanked me. Also, I already rated and commented on your game.

omg, I didnt realize you were the person who made this game haha! You're so talented, again great work. I would have remembered if I saw your profile picture on the game page, I didnt recognize the name!

bob !!!!! xD

Amazing game, 11/10

Okay, on a more serious note, that's a really fun game ! (and also pretty tough because of the physics... ^^')

2 little nitpicks (sorry xD) : a checkpoint system would have been welcome, and maybe the music could have been looped a little more cleanly c:

Anyway, great job ! Bob is the coolest character of all time ! >w<

Developer

Thank you very much for your comment!!

Yeah ... it's hard, unbalanced, and should have included checkpoints, but this is the first time I got a comment about the music looping, I would look into that if we ever did a post-jam version.

Bob is definitely cool! But Bowser might be the coolest of all time 😉

GMTK: The theme of this year's jam is "Out of Control".

Bob: Hold my crate.

Also, can we please have a 10 hour loop of that music on YouTube?

On a serious note this game is an absolute riot, I love Bob, such an unpredictable wee scamp! :D

Developer (2 edits) (+1)

LOL. Thank you very much for your comment and for checking out the game!

This is the music if want to listen to it for 10 hours 🤣:

Hahaha amazing thank you! :D

Also, did not know about this channel, great resource, thanks!

BOB for the win! Thank you for your comment!

Very humoristic and whimsical, the character has a lot of personality! I liked the idea, it's a bit hard for me to beat (I always die in the beginning of the second map), maybe add checkpoints. Good job!

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you for checking it out!

Neat game, but the physics are a little buggy (kept flinging the dude into orbit if I clipped him with a box.) But considering 48 hours, great job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much!
About the physics, I spent a lot of time trying to make it better, Unity's physics engine acts weird some times. Definitely could be improved though ...

This is a nice idea that captures the out of control feeling well! I thought it was a little bit too difficult and personally that took away from the fun for me a bit. I kept on launching bob into outer space and the poor guy couldn't take it.

I really like the visual style for the environment, but maybe bob could use some artist-love. The music is really fun too! I think the game would feel a little nicer if there was feedback to the player when you die --- even just some screen shake an audio effect would go a long way to help me understand what exactly it was that ended my run.

Great job!

Developer (3 edits) (+1)

Thank you very much for checking out the game. I'm very happy about your feedback, this is one of the most helpful comments I did get. This is almost the first game I fully developed, the same goes for Sirin (The artist), she never made game art before, and all of that really shows in the game's polish. Will definitely work on all of your suggestions if we did a post-jam update. Thank you a lot!

Submitted(+1)

This game is fun! It only lacks a checkpoint system to be really good. It fits the theme very well and made me laugh.

Developer

Thank you very much for playing the game and leaving such a nice comment!
Yeah I should have added checkpoints I agree ...

Hey! I already downloaded and rated but forgot to leave a comment! Great work on the submission and a really neat concept!

Developer (2 edits)

Thank you very much! I appreciate you leaving a comment.

I really liked this! I wish there was a little confirmation when Bob dies or something before he respawns, because that was a bit jarring, but I loved flinging him around. That was a really fun interpretation of the theme, thanks for the game! Good work!

Developer

Thank you very much for trying the game and leaving such a nice comment. I'm glad you liked it!
Yeah ... the death mechanics definitely could be tweaked.
