I sadly didn't finish this game as I got caught by the couches, but I did enjoy what I played!

It honestly reminded me of Myst with needing to look around to interact and having the flashlight follow the cursor.

The general atmosphere and soundscape were well done, and I really liked the tutorializing system!

The combat was a bit awkward but after the first couple battles I was able to get into the strategizing and managed to actually defeat an enemy I don't think I was intended to fight lol. It had 15 health and I still had the starting weapon and base stats!

There is a number of quirks regarding the UI though. With other items appearing over a highlighted items tooltip, and the tooltips going off the edge of the screen.

And while the visuals are overall great with the low poly low rez look, the sprites are kinda out of place. They look great don't get me wrong but it looks like putting pokemon in Doom 3.

Overall I enjoyed what I played of the game though, good work!

Thanks for the kind comment! The coach bug seems to be catching a lot of people, woops our bad :). 2D stuff and 3D stuff were done by two different artists, which is why they probably feel out of touch with each other. Appreciate you trying the game out!

Great art and I like the right click to look around mechanic. I was quite confused about what the cards were for since, except for the "use all your amo" there wasn't much of an "attack". So I ended up just dying all the time to monsters that just had more luck than me and also 5 times my health.
I didn't manage to get too far but I still went around a bit and I think there is good potential :)

Developer

Yeah, the starting deck only really has Barrage as an offensive weapon, but there are six weapons/decks in total across the map :). Appreciate the feedback though! And thanks for playing :).

Damn, I ran into a bug, where I was stuck between two couches. But anyway, the game is great. Really awesome 3d graphics and very creative, well drawn sprites. And all homemade?! The movement is very smooth and feels good. Looking around does not really do much, but maybe enhances the atmosphere a bit. The battle system works well and allows a bit of strategyzing. The sound scape fit the graphics very well. With a bit more polish, this could be something commercial I think.

Developer

Really appreciate it! Yup, the coaches soft-lock you for some reason :). I agree, the artists worked miracles in this project, they deserve all the praise. Again, thanks for the kind words!

A bit hard for me maybe, but still fun. Always nice to see different takes on the genre too!

Developer

Appreciate you playing the game!

I think I wiped it out and completed the game...

It was fun to play, but card system was a bit involved and hard to understand. Normal attack was a bit weak usually and The upgrade system I never really got to know. I died a few times so last playthrough I just placed it all in health, which seemed to work.

Developer(+1)

Appreciate you playing a bunch! Balancing and the card explanations could 100% have been done better, agreed. We, like everyone else :), kinda ran out of time. Thanks for the feedback though!

The game was really fun and we really liked the card system!

There were some bugs however, but aside from not being able to leave the main menu options, they were all mentioned in previous comments! Even so we still had a good time with it!

Overall fun submission! All the cards must have taken a long time. haha.

Developer

Really appreciate it! Yup, bugs are to be found :). And yup the cards did take a share fair of time, should have probably used that time on polish, but thanks again!

Ok really liked the direction you were taking with this game. I enjoyed the combat and art very much. I didn't love the limited flashlight as much but it did fit the scary spaceship vibe you were going for.
Controls felt a little bit wonky, but you get use to them. I also did get stuck in places a few times where it wouldn't let me get out of an area (ie the couches next to a window because I wanted to look out and see what was out there haha). Overall though it was fun and creative game, nice work.

Developer

Appreciate the kind words! Yup, I do agree that the game needs some polish :), and there are a couple of bugs yeah. Thanks for giving it a try though!

Really nice game. Felt a bit dark in the beginning, but once I realized that the flashlight can be controlled via mouse, it was a cool addition to the whole exploration. I also experienced some bugs others have already listed. For me, interestingly enough, the most confusing one was the outlines clipping through walls. But I managed to live with them. The enemies felt a bit out of place. All the wall textures and other UI elements were more or less consistent, but from the enemies I would have expected the same, low-poly PS1 look. Audio was fine, nothing extra, maybe some sound effects from the monster would have been good. Some ambience while they were closing in, and some other during battle. In the end, it had some parts that I really enjoyed, but the visual and gameplay issues sadly often damaged my experience.

Developer

Really appreciate you playing through the game! I fully agree with that the game could have had more polish, but it is what it is :). The monster art and environmental models were done by two different people, so that is probably why they feel a bit out of place. Again, appreciate the feedback a shit ton.

Really well done :D I played it a few times (Died a bunch) but really enjoyed it! It's definitely the better of the card games I have played so far in this jam! Shame the ending is cut so short though :/ Really good effort for your team though and I hope after the jam there is a bit more content/polish added! Would happily play it again!

Issues:

  • Glitch near windows where the couch is I got stuck between the two tiles next to the window and could not move
  • The barrage with the starter pistol seems to be the most useful attack option even after getting the other weapons. Less incentive to use the other items.
  • Enemies can sometimes wipe you out in one go and no checkpoints really hurts with this.
  • Glitch where sometime you have to hold right click to interact with things in the battle mode

Appreciate you trying the game out! Yup, agree that we need some polish after the jam, especially with bugs and balancing :). Thank you for the kind words though!

Great submission! I love the combat! Atmosphere is really good! Only one issue: sometimes cursor disspaears and you need to open the  menu to interract with shit

Developer

Thanks for the comment! Yeah there are a few bugs unfortunately, but I'll get around to fixing them after the voting is over and we can update our games again. Really appreciate the kind words :)!

Really great game, gave me strong DOOM3 vibes!

I think I was near the end but when I clicked the computer I got a text screen about "It had to be done..." and couldn't progress.

A few times I couldn't trigger combat (had to back away and restart).

Liked the combat system, good synnergy depending on you hand with piling up ammo before using a barrage.

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you a lot for trying it out! Don't worry, what you got is the ending :), it was rushed in like 10min lol. There was supposed to be a boss, but the player spawns in the wrong spot for it to play so woops on our part. Will make sure to fix everything up after the voting period. Game does unfortunately have bugs that we didn't have time to fix, but hopefully that didn't ruin the overall game for you! Appreciate the feedback and kind words :)!

Developer

doom 3 is one of my favorites, and definitely was one of my inspiration for making the atmosphere. glad you enjoyed it!

Really nice ambience / horror vibes in this one!

The card mechanic was confusing initially because I think the combat is bugged and it seems the bonuses to “next attack” do not work. I did end up making it through to what I believe was the final encounter before the game crashed.

I loved that switching between weapons changed the deck! Very cool idea.

I think I would love a fully functioning version of a game like this.

Great job. Thanks for sharing it with us!

You can watch my playthrough here: https://youtu.be/F0IEHn3F9lM

Developer

Really appreciate you playing the game! Bonuses to next attack work :), the explanations are just a bit bad. They impact the attack of the current turn. The game does have a bunch of bugs we unfortunately didn't have time to fix, so hopefully it didn't ruin your experience. What you got to was indeed the ending, so no worries there. Thanks a shit ton for the feedback!

(When leveling up, attack bonuses increase your likelihood to hit the enemy, not the damage. Damage bonuses increase damage, but I agree that's very confusing, our bad :). )

Jam HostSubmitted

No worries! I had a great time. Looking forward to your next entry :)

I played 1 run , i think i made it at least midway through the game bcs i believe i played it about 15-20 mins at least but couldn't beat it. Kind of rage quit when one of the monsters killed me with a critical hit when i had 7 hp :)

I'll start of with graphics. I think you went for a PS1 kind of aesthetic, sci-fi horror game. There is a strong atmosphere in the game but i found the low resolution and FOV jarring. Especially FOV. The metrics and proportions of the level felt somewhat off to me as well. I think lighting and shadows contribute the most to the atmosphere of the game. Especially shadows. I think you mostly used baked lighting in the game.

Free camera mode with right click works well but it's also glitchy a little. In combat you can normally select the cards with mouse but sometimes a bug occurs where you have to hold RMB to select the cards. Also after battles you choose to boost one of your stats. You have to hold RMB on that screen to click on buttons too.

I think combat is the part of the game which deserves praise the most and i think that's where most of the effort was put on but it's not without problems i have to say. The artwork on cards look really nice. System works well for the most part. The roll die thing looks nice but from a player perspective i think it slows down the  game and make it much more random. Deck builder combat is already random, i don't think there is a need to add more randomness to it. Also that randomness can yield very undpredictable results which can be frustrating. Enemies were dealing 4-5 damage max then suddenly it spiked to 7-8 dmg. My total HP was 9 and i gave points to HP on every level up. We start with  5 HP which is too low.

I think the map is pretty big and it was hard to navigate without a map. Darkness makes it even harder. There are some bugs in the game i found.;
- When i took the power sword after the sniper rifle, the latter was disappeared from the inventory
- Back button doesn't work on the settings menu on main menu scene, you have to restart game when you enter settings
- When you press switch weapons button, you can select only one weapon in the inventory even if you have more than 2
- There are some minor  UI bugs where menus overlap eachother. Some texture glitches here and there

It was fun for me overall. I enjoyed playing a sci-fi horror crawler game with a good atmosphere. Nice work!

Developer(+1)

Thanks a shit ton for playing! 100% agree with you, the balancing could have been done better :). Unfortunately we didn't have time to fix a lot of the bugs, but hopefully it didn't ruin the experience too much for you! Honestly I really appreciate all the feedback, and I'll make sure to implement these when I can patch the game.

Again, thanks for playing!

"It had to be done."

I enjoyed the game a lot in the end. The dungeon is detailed and cool to explore (I don't like the darkness but anyway) with the keycards and notes to find as well as the different weapons, especially the different weapons, I even played a second time to the end to try most of these (didn't try the shotgun as I think there were no enemy left). As a big part thanks to these weapons with decks themed on completely different mechanisms combat is super fun. The blood sword is super cool. The dfficulty was perfect for me for a jam, which added a lot to my enjoyment, once you figured the game out then you get to crush it but you have to get there first.

I got various technical issues. I think I got stuck once in the corner with the couch and had to restart, also a couple of times I had huge difficulties managing to click on an UI button.

Thanks for sharing!

Developer

Appreciate the kind comment a lot!

Unfortunately, there are a decent amount of bugs that we didn't have time to fix, but I'll get around to it hopefully after the jam :).

Thank you for playing!

Visually this game has a lovely artstyle and atmosphere.

The difficulty was a problem for me however. On the first 3 runs I was one-shot / crit by the first monster, and I just felt awfully unlucky. Eventually I survived that fight and then was one-shot by the next enemy around the corner and up the stairs. On the next run I went the other way, grabbed the sniper and that helped quite alot! But a short time later a crit took me down from full health.

This was a shame because I actually was really enjoying the way the card system was working, and wanted to explore more. Just insta-deaths can feel terrible for the player, it really felt like there wasn't much I could do in that situation to play around it. I tried to spec into HP one run, and defense another and I was still getting slapped around.

From what I was able to see, I really like your implementation of the cards combat. There have been quite a few I've played in this jam so far and I actually think yours is my favourite, it's nice and crunchy, not overly complex for the sake of it, and was intuitive from the start.

If you can give any advice on the best way to stay alive and progress I'd love to give this another go. Thank you.

Developer

Yeah, sorry about the difficulties around the enemies. We unfortunately didn't reallyyy have time to balance things, so sometimes you can just get crit three times in a row, which sucks. Generally my best advice would be to use deck combos, like for the starting deck doing (ammo cache/stockpile -> barrage) to maximise turn 1 or 2 damage.

Appreciate you playing the game a lot though!

How do I use the Keycard on the door? I've tried equipping it and hovering over it with the keycard but the door won't accept it.

Developer

Really sorry, that is a broken build uploaded just so that we can update it. Currently building the fixed one, gimme a sec :)

Developer

Yeah alright the fixed version is now the one set as the download.
