Game Description
A short platformer/puzzle about learning to use your masks to fit in.
How does your game tie into the theme?
The world is divided in 2, one is literally masked or concealed while you see the other. Switching the mask you are wearing allows you to see the other world and "fit in".

Pixel art looks super crisp! Details combined with lighting are awesome!
Platformer itself feels very challenging, I didn't have enough platformer experience to finish it myself unfortunately.
Shifting between 2 dimensions mechanic is super cool.
Although I'm not sure if it's intended - you can crawl up at the beginning area and start the game from finish and go towards the start :D
Thanks! Yeah it's way too hard. I was the only play tester. This will definitely be a priority next jam. Also yeah, that is not intended. You aren't supposed to be able to infinitely wall climb like that but I couldn't figure out how to stop it.
The artwork is supreme, i love it so much. all the details, the little sway of his coat, the backgrounds, everything looks really good.
If thats really your first time coding than hats off. the first time i coded i was happy i had text printed on the screen, so this is kind of a huge accomplishment what you did there in my opinion.
The 2 phased layout is a really clever idea for a platformer, i like it. hinting at the other dimension platforms with dashed lines is a good gamedesign choice. So a really good execution for a first game. Super impressive.
I couldnt get past this point cause im too stupid i guess lol :D
I tried like 40 times and then gave up.
A great game you can be really proud of yourself!
Wow! Thanks for such the high praise!! I did some coding in highschool a long time ago in java script but other than that yeah, first time. This is the result of a lot of heartbeast, brackeys and billz tutorials stitched together haha. The code is a huge mess, too. Originally, I had 2 different state machines for the different masks, and then 3 machines within each of those for the walk, climb, and dash states. Ended up being able to simplify it a lot by setting var for what animation player and sprite to use.
My original design didn't have the outlines for the hidden platforms, and it was just way too hard to tell where to jump and land. I'm glad that ended up being the right choice.
Hey, you got further than 90% of people. A huge issue that I see now is that the game is just way too hard as a result of me being the only play tester. If you get to that blue block, you just swap-dash-swap in rapid succession without moving and it takes you through spikes. Then up through the other ones and land on the next blue one.
Thanks for the kind review and taking the time to try out my game!!
The actual idea of a platformer where you are swapping between 2 different versions of the level is legitimatly a very good idea.
I understand that you're aware of the difficulty issue so i won't say much on the matter, but it is a shame because i would have loved to have seen more of it! Hopefully playtesting with others is high up on your list for next time! (hmu if you need strangers to test!)
Now! Besides that, like i said i think the idea is genuinely very good and the atmospherics/artwork and the storytelling i was able to see were very nice.
Honestly, think you've done a good job for your first jam. Nice work!
Thanks!! Yeah, that darn difficulty. I definitely underestimated the importance of other people play testing. This will be a high priority for my next jam. I want to be sure to be respectful of people's time. When someone is going through and playing potentially hundreds of different games, I can't expect them to sit down and grind out my difficult level for 30+ minutes. I can speak on that from experience now. When I am playing through these games and one of them frustrates me and feels like I'm getting nowhere because it's too hard, I don't want to keep doing it. I want to move on to the next one. There are certainly people that will do that, and games like Jump King, Getting Over It, etc. are made for them, but that is a very small niche.
I loved the art style and the mechanic of swapping between the two characters, which felt very fun to play! I did end up getting stuck at one point. I understood what I needed to do, but couldn't quite pull it off. I'm not usually very good at this type of game, but I still had a great time with it!
Thanks for taking the time to play and review it! Yeah, unfortunately I wasn’t able to get others to play test it before shipping so the difficulty ended up being way too high. This will be a priority for the next game jam.
Some of the best and most iconic art in the whole jam! Really clean and crisp designs that contrast the world. The hand spikes too were metal. The platforming unfortunately was a tad bit janky and difficult. Id say the main thing is the pace of it. None of the challenges were hard intellectually. They were actually really good in there design and escalation but the timing windows on a lot of them were so brief understood a lot of the challenges quickly but then spent 5 minutes just tryna do it.
Fantastic work though with some polishing on the gameplay side could defiently see this being a professional release!
Wow!! That’s some high praise, thank you! This was my first time working with pixel art so it was a really cool challenge to learn the restraints of it. Yeah the difficulty is definitely too high. Many of the jumps require really precise input timing and are not forgiving. For sure something I will keep in mind for next months wild jam. Thanks for taking the time to play and review!!
I got stuck here... dashing into the crystal doesn't seem to work all the time; there's a tiny boost but not enough to get to the next one. I got frustrated trying to figure this bit out so gave up.
Main issue for me is it feels super awkward to press direction, jump, and dash with 1 hand (plus switch mask on right). Other than that the control feels pretty fair, little bit of physics jank but solid overall.
The levels just get way too hard too quickly xD.
I relied a lot on walljumping up walls celeste-style (walljump without pressing a direction, then going toward the wall...) so I think I cheesed a few sections too. Actually the first thing I did was jump all the way to the top of the game from the first room - I guess in a way I got to the end? xD
Love the artwork and music, the tileset + background for the blue mask (above screenshot ^) is especially nice.
Thanks for trying it out! Really appreciate the time you took, especially to get further than most people so congrats on that! Yeahhh, the game is way too hard for a game jam. This is my first time coding and making a game, so I didn't have any time to playtest on anyone other than myself. Next time, this will be a priority. Trying to get the little boost to work with the jump crystals was a struggle. It works very consistently when you land on them, but not so much if you dash into them. I'm glad you liked the art! That's definitely what I feel the most comfortable with, as I'm a designer for work. Thanks for the review and feedback!
Love the vibe, very atmospheric. The concept is super interesting however it felt a bit clunky to use. With some polish to responsiveness and wall jumping, would be super addictive!
Thanks for trying it out! Absolutely agree. I spent a lot of time trying to tune the movement to feel good, but I am just not experienced enough with godot to get it right just yet. I learned a lot and will do things differently next time. Thanks for taking the time to try it out!
Very cool game
The mask switching is a very cool mechanic; the execution is okay.
The character control could be better. The wall jump feels a bit stiff, and the camera also does not switch correctly sometimes
Good art style and level design are quite nice.
Good work
Thanks for taking the time to try it! Yeah, for sure a lot of things to improve on and learn from this one. Character control was a tough one to nail and I think would just take time and lots of play testing. I was pretty tight on time from learning godot while making this, so I was the only play tester haha :) Hopefully, I will have a better grasp of the language for next month's jam and have some more time for testing it. Most of the negative feedback could be resolved from that such as it being too difficult.
I really liked the message and vibe that the game conveys, art is great. The mask switching mechanic is fun, but unfortunately I didn't have enough skill to complete the game :(
I don't know if this is intentional, but I had problems with bunnyhopping - if I try to jump immediately after landing on the ground, the jump sometimes doesn't work or has a noticeable delay. This interrupts the flow, which is crucial for such platforming-based game.
Overall, a great entry, thank you!
Thanks for playing it! Yeah unfortunately it’s a fairly challenging mechanic mixed with overly precise level design. Makes it way too hard. Interesting about the bunny hop thing, I’ll have to watch some tutorials about that. This is my first time coding so everything is a lesson learned. Next months game will be easier!
Whewie, now that was challenging! Every level I breathed a sigh of relief, only to gasp at what came next. When I reached the end I was kind of shocked ("did I really just do that?"), which is a great feeling to have as a player :)
Also loved the story, and how it tied into the art. Great tone, atmosphere, and congrats on your first Godot Wild Jam!
Wow!!! Thank you so much! I think you might be the first person to have finished. Super grateful for you to have taken the time to play it all the way through because the difficulty was a bit high for a game jam I think. Next months jam will be easier haha
Cool art!! though for some reason the first tileset didn't load. I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to look like the image below. The rest of the art is super cool, well implemented theme, though as AFK_Kiko said below, that double wall challenge was really hard and frustrating for me, it feels like the difficulty ramped up a lot there. But the vibe is really chill, I liked the idea, fun game overall, good job!
Ah, yeah I was worried people would think that. That is the intended tileset and its meant to just be bland and boring and kind of void of texture and life. Tired from the day and just can't find the joy anymore. Thanks for the review and sorry it was frustrating! Definitely wish I could go back and change that section but it's a lesson for the next game. Thanks for playing!
Oh, that flew right over my head then. If I see that checkerboard pattern and I'm in a game jam (with so many buggy games) the first thing I'd assume is that it's a bug. If you were really going for that, I think pure black or pure grey would have done the trick but that's just my opinion.
Totally agree! Thanks for the feedback. The intro was a last minute addition
I found the idea very creative tbh, the fact that it also has a story that supports it is really nice! Most of my feedback will come from the difficulty though.
The image in the attachment bellow was the first challenge that really confused me, I felt like I had to Mario jump my way up while switching masks but the timing would always be off; eventually I did it but I stopped playing in a later level cuz it had a similar puzzle that was wayy to difficult.
Congrats on your first GWJ though, overall it was really interesting!
Thanks for playing and the feedback! Yeahhhh, it seems most people say its too difficult, which is definitely a fault of me being the only play tester :) but you live and learn. If I could go back and change that section and the similar one that follows, I would. There are dash refresh crystals just after that and those would serve well in this earlier section.
I really love the art style and mood! I did find it quite difficult though and i kept dying from forgetting that clicking swapped the mask too haha
Thanks! Yeah, I was worried I made it too hard. Which part did you find the hardest? Did you beat it?
It's a nice concept and the visuals are great, but I'm struggling to pass the level with the wall in the middle. Even with the dash, the wall jump doesn't go that far and I end up dying.
I'm not sure which one you are talking about. Is it before or after the jump crystals? The one where the blue spikes separate the 2 blue blocks?
