How does your game fit the theme?
The game represents the journey of a beginner game developer. The player starts as a small snowball that grows in size when rolling forward—symbolizing learning and growth. When idle, the snowball shrinks, reflecting how progress slows without action. A snowman character acts as a mentor, teaching the snowball mechanics and tools (representing coding and development skills). By the end of the game, the snowball transforms into a snowman—signifying the transition from beginner to experienced developer.

Really creative entry! the main mechanic is super fun, and i like the fact that the ice golems start crying to indicate that i‘m big enough to CRUSH them. very cool made me feel like a snowball

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for playing im really glad to hear you liked the mechanic and the feedback of the ice golems when you are big enough to crush them.

Wow, amazing game! I love the visuals, and the game feels a lot like Celeste! Maybe you could add a little bit of acceleration and/or deceleration to make the gameplay feel even more realistic.

Developer(+1)

Glad you liked the visuals and that it kind of gives celeste vibes, about acceleration personally im against that in this type of games because it becomes really hard to control which can affect player experience in a bad way, but anyways thanks for playing.

Really great fun. The difficulty is a tad harsh in places, but causing a little frustration is obviously intentional to fit with the story. The mechanic is cool, the art is nice, and the dialogue is inspiring. Top stuff, well done.

Developer

Thanks for playing and for your feedback, glad you liked the mechanic and the art and the story lore.

Absolutely amazing game with an amazing concept :)

this is probably the best way you could've taken the theme :)

Developer(+1)

Really glad you liked the concept and think it fits the theme very well, thanks for playing.

Submitted(+1)

I like how polished this is. The size change concept is cool, feels like it should have been in last years GMTK jam. The dialog system is impressive for ten days. Only suggestion is to add some bg music.

Developer

Thanks for playing i really appreciate it, for you suggestion i already have wind as a bg music i though adding some weird action music would affect the ambient in a bad way.

Developer

also im glad you think my game should have been in the GMTK game jam from last year a lot of people mention that it would fit the theme and would most probably win.

Submitted(+1)

That was really really clean, with a nice thought game design, and a really creative idea of a mechanic, it is simple, but everything works around it and it doesn't feel gimmicky! Also I don't know if it was on purpose, but I saw a great message in that mechanic too: sometime in life you have to work on your own growth first before committing into a seemingly harsh task, as sometime you have to wait to be in the right state (of mind hehe). it's ok to take some step back, it's ok to wait for the right time 🦾

thank you for passing by my rating section, I'm happy I had the chance to discover your game!

Developer

Thanks for playing and for your feedback, i cant say a 100% that i intended that message but i can surely say that my goal on the story lore was to encourage and cheer up new game devs that are just getting started which is basically the goal of shovel and the game jam theme.

Submitted(+1)

So good, especially for a first game! I would love some more checkpoints cause it's pretty annoying to have to run thru the whole level before you can continue.

Overall fun game with good art!

Developer

Thanks for playing and you are 100% right on the game lacking checkpoints, anyways thanks for playing.

Wow, what an incredible entry, and a first time game jam entry also! The mechanics of the game were very unique with the rolling to grow and the jumping to shrink and I love how they work together seamlessly to not take away from the gameplay. The art is also incredible and I loved the dialogue/story moments throughout the entire game. I can definitely see this game expanding into something more and I hope you spend more time adding onto it in the future!

Developer

Thanks for your compliments and for your feedback i appreciate it.

This game was so fun and cute! The presentation and sound design were all clean and cohesive. I especially loved the mechanic of growing/shrinking and that there were benefits to both (larger = can crush things, smaller = can jump higher), so the main strategy element of the game was moving between big and small. I did find it a bit hard and punishing at times and I think some checkpoints would help a lot to ease the difficulty. Other than that amazing job, especially for your first jam wow!

Developer

Thank you so much i really appreciate your feedback, thanks for playing.

I liked this short game :)

I think my favorite part is the message the game tries to give to the player because it reinforces it with the difficulty of the game and doesn't stay in just dialogue of the snowman

Also the in the 3rd level at the end I thought it was a difficult part and the snowball says something about it haha, I like that is aware of it but as it says, the process at the end feels rewarding and in some way it can be felt at the end of the game when you pass the last segment

About the difficulty, I liked but I didn’t like much the ice golems only because it’s a bit hard to roll over them in some situations, it adds some difficulty and that’s nice, but I think the only place I didn’t like their placement was in the second level at the start and the last one, outside that, those are a nice touch and don’t feel unfair most of the time

The platforming feels nice, the jump animation is good, also the snowball size mechanic is fun and I like that it actually matters and can, it can lead to some variations of the gameplay or even the implementation of little puzzles in some part of the level playing with the weight of the snowball, like those falling platforms

I really like the sfx of this game, those are great! The atmosphere is amazing, no music, just windy mountains and you rolling around, it can be a bit risky not putting music on so it's great that the mood of the game could pull this in a good way

And well, I already said that I like the message that the game tries to give, the path can feel something like is described here and it’s nice that at the end the cycle repeats

Thanks for sharing your game, this was a nice short experience that I could see as a more complete game if more levels are added haha

And congrats on finishing your 1st jam, keep doing games! :D

Developer(+1)

thanks for playing im glad to hear you enjoyed the game and the story of it also thanks for the feedback on the level design and difficulty, it helps improve the game if i decide to continue developing it.

This might be a contender right next to The Contract for me to be honest, it is just perfect! The storyline, sound design, mechanics and pixel art just blend perfectly! I love that the collision boxes are not overly punishing and that the feedback you get from everything around you is simply perfect! It was really fun to play this and I can't wait to see what more you'll create! Amazing work!

Developer

thanks for playing and for your compliments i really appreciate it.

One of the best from the jam! This is an amazing game for a first jam game. The pixel art is so charming, audio design, gameplay is REALLY fun and unique and it also has a great message. I can't wait to see what you'll make next!

Submitted(+1)

I loved the aesthetics and feel of the game! the pixels are perfect. The setting and self.-improvement theme is reminding me of Celeste <3. Just the right amount of particles! SFX are very well chosen too!

Outstanding, specially considering this is your first game jam!

Just a little feedback! I personally would've enjoyed it more if the game had checkpoints inside the levels, since the second level difficulty spike was kinda high!

But I get that to make the experience similar to gamedev it had to BE HARD. Making games is so hard.

Great job!

Developer

Thank you so much for playing really happy to hear that you liked the game, yea checkpoints were the biggest complain players mentioned.

Cute art, so pretty! I liked the weight mechanic, very interesting! Keep it up!

Developer

Thank for playing!!

Super cool game! It reminded me of the GMTK Game Jam 2024 theme (this could've been a winner if you had made it for that jam lol) I really liked the art style. The spikes were a little too big, and having to redo the entire level after losing wasn't ideal, adding checkpoints would have really helped. But overall, it's a super clean and nice game!

Developer

Thanks for playing and for your feedback.

Very nice game. Sounds effects are perfect. At your age I was putting super chargers on cars not building games. Granted that was in the late 90's. Well done over all!

Developer

Thanks for the compliment really appreciate it i guess everybody starts at some point in their live, like i know people that studied their entire life software engineer and then in their mid 30 started game dev.

Very beautiful visuals and an interesting, unique mechanic! But here are a few issues I noticed:

  1. In my opinion, the levels are a bit too long, and starting over after dying doesn’t feel great. It would be nice to have checkpoints throughout the level.

  2. The spike collision seems a bit too large.

  3. I didn’t really like the moment where you approach a springboard and spikes fall from above, even though you can’t see them beforehand.

  4. Simply scaling up the snowball sprite creates an issue with inconsistent pixel sizes (pixel mismatch).

Developer

thanks for playing and for your feedback, yea the game lacks a checkpoint system also the spikes collision mask should probably be smaller the icicles you mentioned can be hard to see and notice but they are visible and the mixels of the snowball happens because i dont scale the snowball with integers like for example its xscale and yscale could be anything from 1 to 3 like 1.45 which will cause mixels not matter what, anyways thanks for this detailed feedback.

Submitted(+1)

I meant something a bit different about the pixel mismatch — when a sprite is simply scaled up, its pixel size increases and no longer matches the environment’s pixel size. Ideally, you’d draw separate sprites for each snowball size, but of course that’s too much for a game jam.

Submitted(+1)

I really liked this game, I think if you added when you are very big that when you get hit by the ice golems you just shrink instead of imediatly dying, also the art and music is very impressive and polished

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and for your feedback, yes thats a great idea rather than a 1hp snowball.

Submitted(+1)

The ambience and the artstyle was very good, and the snowball SFXs were amazing! The lack of checkpoints made restarting levels 2 and 3 just to die in the same chokepoint a bit annoying to me >_<

Game was fun overall, good job ^_^

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing yea the game lacks a checkpoint system.

Submitted(+1)

Really cool idea. A bit tough for sure, maybe making the golems more predictable would be nice. Great game!
