Game Description
Starlight Odyssey is a fun, action, adventure space game!

How does your game tie into the theme?
Starlight Odyssey embodies Consume because every movement drains your limited energy bar, forcing you to scavenge and purchase food to refuel and keep exploring toward Earth. As a desperate last resort you can “consume yourself,” instantly restoring current energy while permanently shrinking the maximum cap, trading tomorrow’s strength for survival now.

A very big game, I can tell this has a lot of depth - I honestly felt slightly overwhelmed from everything - but very cool. I did not expect to talk to NPCs with dialogue and sidequests.

I like the option of lowering max energy to refill the bar. A great bit of desperate measures are sometimes needed. Nice inclusion of the basic controls on screen as you start.

Incredibly ambitious, I can tell a lot of systems needed to be made for this game to work. Landing on a planet for the first time kinda blew my mind. Loved the charming art and the kooky characters on the planets. The bar mini-game was pretty fun too.

Developer

Thanks, I am glad you enjoyed playing!

Super cool game, and an incredible amount of content for a jam. Really really great job.

For a game that feels quite big, it's pretty polished.  I think the game should pause when zooming out.  The bartending part was actually fun.  You nailed the mood and atmosphere of a space exploration game and sick intro!  Good job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! It means a lot and I am very glad you enjoyed playing!

Very cool game. Its great that you manage to implement both the flying mechaninc as also landing and playing as the astronaut. Really interesting concpet and implementation. Music and art are also amazing. Great work!

Love the look and feel of the game

Developer

Thanks! Did you manage to reach Earth?

Submitted(+1)

Wow, great game! I made it to the food planet before I died, so sadly, I wasn't able to see the ending of the game. But there's a lot of polish and a lot of content here and I enjoyed playing through the game! :) Well done!

Developer

Thanks! means a lot from you, because I played your game and it is one of my favourites I have played. Good work and I am glad you enjoyed my submission!

A lot of content for a jam game. Wibble lived to tell to tale though because I couldn't shoot the gun. The game over animation is sick.

Developer(+1)

Oh, to shoot indoors you gotta press space then click! I don't think I made that clear enough (in the dialogue and itch description) but I am very glad you enjoyed!

Starlight Odyssey

  • Liked the opening sequence a lot. Backstory gives increased importance to the game.
  • On the topic, I like the 2D art and UI design as well. Very sci-fi retro.
  • Good idea integrating control scheme into the game itself via labels. But the instructions are a little bit too much in succession. Would rather have them spaced out / triggered by an event (like when the first food comes onto the screen, that's when to slap the "Press 'F' to eat food" label on the screen).
  • Not sure how I feel about the shifting camera exposing Godot's grey viewport on the sides. Think it would've been better to have expanded the canvas beyond it. (EDIT: Okay, it's not a viewport; it's just a container for the tutorial section that happens to have the same colour as Godot's viewport, lol)
  • Got annihilated on my first playthrough, since I didn't realize the ammo running out was the reason I couldn't shoot anymore. But considering how many enemies you can encounter on the way, and difficulty outrunning them, ammo should be unlimited I feel.

  • Second playthrough: landed on a planet, and I'm somewhat amazed at the depth of game. Characters and a narrative system. Very cool!
  • Feel the narrative system should return to the main dialogue menu rather than closing. Have to initiate the conversation each time to access the next dialogue option.
  • Wish the planets had some sound / music to them.
  • I liked the timed assassination challenge, but couldn't figure out how to shoot the guy (whose name in the dialogue box is different than the one in the photo).
  • Wow, even a mixology feature. Holy cow. Yeah, there appears to be a lot of work that went into this submission. Frankly, not sure how you did it in nine days!
  • Slightly disappointed that all three planets are the same: with the same characters, assassination challenge, and mixology minigame. But can understand the limitations of the game jam.
  • I disagree with some design choices, like the life energy draining while you're on a planet, or the timers continuing to run after you've pressed the escape key (which I was doing to pause so I could write this review). For a game like this which is all about space exploration and learning about characters / stories of this unique universe, I'd much prefer a patient playthrough where planning for journeys trumps rushing through them.

  • Visited all three planets, which again were the same, and wasn't sure how to progress from there or if there was an actual win condition to work towards, so concluded my playthrough after the third planet.

I liked Starlight Odyssey. A ton of imagination and functional mechanics. Good job!

Developer

btw to shoot indoors you need to hold Space while clicking. It says in the controls and the girl Moko says it too. The wrong name was a bug, sorry about that. And there are 3 total planet types, 2 food planets and 1 work planet. The goal is mentioned in the intro cutscene which is to reach Earth and if you talk to some of the NPC's and ask around you will find out you need to buy the Cosmic Compass that points to Earth. Anyway thanks for your review I really appreciate it and I am glad you had fun playing!!

I really came into this thinking it would be a fun lil dodge the asteroid game, I wasn't expecting there to be a considerate amount of depth and some world building. It's actually pretty surprising to see this in a game jam so good job on that!!

Developer

Thanks a lot! Will have to checkout your game too, looks fun!

An intro scene with nice art and a basic tutorial for a jam game? That is impressive. I thought this was just a game where you need to avoid asteroids, but then I came across a planet, quite impressive what has been made in such short time.

Cool game !

Very big game, and very nice intro. The game is tough from the get go....but could just be a skill issue :D

Developer

Yea, honestly it needs some balancing, it is quite hard!

Wow so much content for a game jam! Nice, loved the epic opening. I do find it quite hard with how limited ammo you have at the beginning :) Took a while to realize zoom out is essential to know where you are going haha. Goo one!

Developer

Thanks a lot! I loved playing your game it was  blast!

Submitted(+1)

Wow, rather epic premise. Great opening, but the text transitioned too fast to read it all.

Love the assassination quest! Lol.

Marking this one for further exploration!

I was pretty bad at steering my ship and reserving my ammo, kept running out and not being able to get more so I just flew aimlessly through space avoiding enemies. Loved the art style and appreciate how much was done in only 9 days. Didn't get very far but definitely see the potential

Developer

You can buy ammo from the gun dealer, but I don't think that was made clear at all. Anyway I am glad you enjoyed the game!

Submitted

Lots of content, and and impressive number of different systems. I died on the first planet I was exploring, not sure why. I may give it another go and see if I can reach Earth. Thanks for making it!

Developer

Most likely because you ran out of energy. Anyway I am glad you enjoyed it and hope you give it another go!

The intro cutscene was nice! At first, I was a bit skeptical I thought it was just a game where you avoid asteroids and destroy enemy ships. But then there were planets too, which I thought was cool. I liked the character art style it reminded me of Undertale. I didn’t get very far, but I think there’s a lot of potential if you improve the space section maybe even add ship management, with crew members and different rooms.

Developer

Yea, cool idea! Anyway I am glad you enjoyed it and gave it a try!

I finished the game, it's good. At first, I was a bit lost, but then I figured out the patterns. You just have to go to the first planet, work a lot to earn tons of money, then go to the second planet to buy as much food as possible and the compass to Earth. And that's it straight to Earth to destroy it, yeeee XD

Developer

yea lol, tysm for playing

Submitted

The main character of the game looked like Darth Sidious. Pixel art was beautiful.  The way you taught the game was something I've never seen before, which was really cool. The cutscenes were cool too, must have taken a lot of time to animate tho. Overall magnificent game!

Developer

Thanks! Did you manage to reach Earth?

Submitted(+1)

No :(
