The mechanics are fun, the art is cohesive, and there's even a story! This is a really great game!

My only real critique is that some of the enemies feel a bit fast or hard to get rid of. The jumping slimes are scary aggressive, and the bats will chase you to the ends of the earth!

Developer

Good to hear you had fun :)! Thank you for the feedback!

We just released an update which addresses the enemy behaviour (among other thins) and makes especially the bats stop chasing you after a while 😅

Really nice entry, the bomb mechanic is really fun to play around. And the art of the different sounds was very good too.
Some more sounds could have been nice, specially for the enemies, and the bomb sound was really low too. But super enjoyable overall!

Developer

Thanks for playing and the feedback!

Glad you enjoyed it :)

Great idea with bomb throwing mechanic, it's thematic and it works alright. I do wish it was tweaked a little, like the started bomb aoe felt pretty small and tough to deal with bats that do not let go of player once they spot them. I don't know if that was intentional mechanic, but i love how I could do hyper jump by detonating red block with a bomb, thought that was much more fun than mushroom bomb we get at the end. Had a hard time aiming the bombs, but I feel like this was more on the browser end and also the fact that mouse sensitivity was quite low, won't complain too much about it, it worked well enough. Great entry overall, very enjoyable!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback, glad you had fun. :)

The hyperjump with the red bombs was intentional but we felt the mechanic might be too hard to demand from the player.
We still gave the option to enter the last boss room with the red bombs and skip the mushroom bombs that way.

A great game, the controls are smooth, and the mechanics of throwing bombs is original and works quite well, although it is a little difficult to get the hang of it at first.

Some areas are quite difficult, and I've died plenty of times.

But in general it is impressive what you have achieved, I liked it a lot!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback!

I agree, it's too difficult in certain areas. Save points and better enemy balancing was definitely at the top of the todo list at the end of the jam, but sadly there was no time left...

Glad you liked the game anyway :)

Throwing bombs is awesome! Like the plot you added and music fits so well :D I was a little shocked when I lost all my bombs, but getting them back was rewarding experience :D Like the variety of enemies, but had a little problem finding out how to kill those violet square things. Overall I find this game amazing!

Developer

Thanks for playing and the feedback! Good to hear, loosing the bombs had the impact we wanted it to have :)

And yes, the slime enemy turned out  much tougher than we intended 😅

Great creativity and I love the bomb throwing! Music and sound design work very well. Would be nice to have more checkpoints.

Awesome game!

Very fun mechanics. Mushroom ability is a little buggy, player gets stuck and sent out of bound easily.

Throwing bombs is fun.

This is a really solid game.

First off, top marks for presentation. The color scheme and animation lend the game an absolutely professional feel. The music is catchy. The controls are very responsive.

Secondly, the bomb-throwing arc is effective and intuitive (though it took a little while for the hand-eye coordination to kick in).

The bomb-juggling mechanic is slightly confusing at first. However, I believe that the "soft tutorial" segment at the beginning was a very good way to introduce the different bombs.

The boss fights are also cleverly put together, in a way that suggests (but does not reveal) the solution.

What kept me from enjoying it a bit more was the difficulty. After I got used to the bomb-throwing arc (which is the central mechanic of the whole game), I was very comfortable with the controls. However, I still died many times, and I really was wishing for more checkpoints so I wouldn't have to drag myself so far each time.

Thanks so much for the nice review!

Glad to hear that the bomb throwing is intuitive for people.

I can see how the difficulty can be a bit offputting... Some of the enemies have a few bugs, where they can make an insane amount of damage at once. I have some fixes for that ready as well as checkpoints, but it wasn't ready for the update/bugfix deadline sadly :)

Really fun and polished game.

The metroidvania genre is well applied and I didn't feel bored or frustated at any moment (except for the fucking bat).

I cheesed the boss by throwing a lot of square bombs before entering the room, so I kinda one shot him, could be good to start the fight just as you enter the room.

I wouldn't say anything negative about it except that the mushrooms bug sometimes and I got stuck a LOT of times.

Developer

Thanks for playing! Glad you had fun.
Nice idea with the square bombs 😂 we haven‘t thought of that one.

And sorry for the mushroom thing. We weren‘t able to fix that one in time. But usually you should be able to destory the mushrooms with the other bombs or otherwise game progress is preserved if you reload the game.

Really great game! The way the art, design, and music all come together is fantastic.

I found it a little counter-intuitive that the bomb select wheel rotates counter-clockwise. I kept expecting right click to rotate the other way, and ended up trapping myself with mushrooms.

I think the recharging bomb mechanic is really neat, and the bomb capacity upgrades are a good idea for an optional pickup.

It kind of has that roguelite/Darksouls quality where rushing through rooms tends to get you surrounded and killed. I liked that. Even the early rooms never stopped feeling like a challenge.

There were a couple of points were the screen transitions felt unfair. One where I had to bounce up on a mushroom and land on a platform in a different room, and one where a rat was able to walk across the room transition and surprise me.

Overall, really impressive entry. It's scoped really well, and feels very cohesive.

Developer

Thanks for the thorough feedback!

Good point with the clockwise selection. Now that you mention it, I cannot think of why I did it like this.  😅

Also I see what you mean with the transitions. We‘ll keep that in mind for future games!

Oh the hulk hands!

Cool game, had fun playing it! Nice throw parable mechanic, and the mushroom jumping pads were awesome.

Cool start from the menu, I would like to make that kind of seamless transition into gameplay sometime too.

It was a little hard to reach the boss with full health, but I did it once. Especially since the rat dude moved around the super bomb before I could blow it up :D

Nice touch with having it all from the start, very metroid! :)

Very enjoyable, good sense of humor. Great entry!

Developer

Thanks for the elaborate feedback!

Some parts definitely became a bit harder than planned. But I'm glad to hear people still manage to play the game through!

After playing quite  a few games now I'm starting to feel more and more that this could be the jam winner :)

Developer

Wow, thanks 😅

I don't know, there are some pretty good entries out there :)

Fun, balanced and original game! Every scene is so considered. As a sound designer I was especially drawn to sound mix, and it's really well-made.

Developer

Thanks for playing and the feedback! Glad you liked it!

And I'm honored that it pleased your ears 😁

Really enjoyed this game. Music and gameplay feels very good, and nice with a touch of humour. The bats are pretty damn dangerous :)

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! Glad you had fun playing the game!

And yes, the bats got me as well a few times while playtesting 😂

Things I Like:

  • graphics
  • music
  • bouncy mushroom

Things I Would Change:

  • get the bomb upgrades over time (less to learn all at once)
  • balance out the audio better (thought there was no explosion sound, then noticed a hint of one on a bomb in a quiet bit of the music)
  • couldn’t find the metroidvania, seemed more like a series of adventures
Developer

Thanks for the feedback

It's a pity you didn't like having all the bombs at the beginning. It was actually meant as an homage to Castlevania: SotN where you also lose all abilities after the intro.

After the first boss fight, the game should be nonlinear and partly utility-gated which is the definition of Metroidvania in my opinion. :)

Submitted (1 edit)

ah, that was not clear as I played. kept getting killed from stuff apparently before it went non-linear. didn’t realize I lost stuff when the goblins came (if that is when you lose stuff).

Developer

Hey! Thanks for playing! Good to hear you had fun with the mushrooms.

I can see how having all the bombs in the beginning can be a bit confusing. We discussed this while developing actually, but then decided to leave it in to give a sense of loss after the goblin raid and as 4rdi already said, in honor of Castlevaina :)

Also, good point with the soundeffects, they could need a bit of polish/balancing!

Anyways, thanks for all the valuable feedback!

Nice game! The music, gameplay, and art are all good, and I especially liked the bomb explosion effects. The level design was kept tight, so I didn't miss having a map or checkpoints too badly. I don't know if this was intended, but I actually managed to beat the game before getting the final bomb type. Seems like I hit a switch with a regular bomb that should have required the last bomb type.  I was having fun though, so I looked around and found it after ;)

Developer

Thanks for playing. Glad you liked it!

We knew there were shortcuts, but that is a wild one we didn't expect, thanks for sharing that 😅
