How does your game fit the theme "Unconventional Means"?
The boss is imune to any damage dealt by your sword, so you have to think of an unconventional way of using the sword to defeat him!

I love the art! And croc is so cute! I'm not that good at bullet hells but still had a lot of fun!

the art style is just mindblowing! Very good job in this short time! The palette is fantastic! The game is too hard for me, but nice job!

Love the artstyle, sound effects and overall feel of the game, but it felt way too difficult for me. The spinning-shot attack was impossible to avoid unless I had my sword already charged up, and homing bullet was a guaranteed hit if you weren't far away from the middle. Felt myself hanging on to the left edge of the screen as it was the most safe, and because of that the game could have definitely benefitted from a more square battlefield and downscaled attacks.

Git Gud kinds of games are my favorite.  You have a great boss design here. Think that it does take a little bit too long to charge up, or rather I don't have a clear indication of charge.  Something like filling your sword with color can go a long way to signify feedback to the player.  Overall great work.

I love the art in this a lot! My reflexes are way too slow to win it but this was still really cool, I love it!

Actually one of my favorite games in the jam. It was really cool!

I had a really good time playing it !!

A little tutorial would be great. At first I didn't know what to do XD

Also, does Croc really loves me?

And...maybe check out my game later?

You got my rating !!

5/5, great game for undertale/ enter the gunegon fans. Keeps a high level of difficulty while being engaging with the reflect mechanic.

The obvious route with this would be to make it into a dungeon crawler (like gungeon) OR to add more bosses in and tell a story (like undertale). You guys got a lot of freedom if you choose to keep going with this game!

I would also consider adding in a few mechanics (and adjusting the skill curve in porportion), such as (destructable) cover, and maybe a mini "blank" effect similar to blastfamy from ETG.  Also, when going to the right side of the boss, the sprite "flips", but the sword attack is now underhanded, which looks and feels a bit jarring.

Lastly, the sword takes just a little too long to charge in my opinion. If you want to keep the difficulty curve, you can make the boss harder to compensate. From a player perspective, its around 1.5 seconds, but it really feels like 2.

With a slightly faster charge time, the player can be more aggressive with more risk reward (dodging back to reflect 1st wave, than having an option to go into and reflect the next wave).

Other than that, consider a tutorial / easy boss to help new players ease into the game. I feel this would really help you guys, as right now it is really easy to put the game down early, and I fear only undertale/gungeon fans (and similar frustrating yet rewarding games like Super Meat Boy) will stick around.

Good luck and keep up the good work! - Yaniv

This game is very fun, specially for those hwo likes difficult games. I took a while, but I managed to beat it, and  with full health!

This was an awesome game, it would be perfect if the attack patterns where less random, since attacks like the spiral and the one that follows don't play nice with each other.

Very cool game but it is way too hard(for me at least).
I really like the way it looks and feels.

Good job!

I like the idea here, but honestly couldn't figure out what I needed to do. I read a spoiler below, which gave me a better idea, but I do agree there needs to be more of an indication that those are what you need to reflect OR make them all able to be reflected back (I still couldn't find which ones to reflect back). Plus you die a LOT I would recommend decreasing the difficulty quite a bit.

The art style and sounds have a nice retro theme to them! Good work!

If you were confused, you just hold the mouse button until the sword starts blinking and then you release to swing your sword. If your sword touches any of the normal bullets they get reflected back! The only bullets you can't reflect are the ninja star ones from the homing attack. Also it's a bullet hell, they're suppose to be hard. Part of the fun is over coming the challenge!

okay i gotchu now i understand it a little better. I guess i didn't hold down the mouse button long enough. I was thinking the opposite, the ninja stars were the only ones that could be reflected back and I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to do it! XD It's still hard, but if that's what you were going for, then you definitely achieved that lol! It's a cool game though for sure (especially now that i know how to play)!

Cool game! It was insanely hard, especially the spinning attack, but the art and sounds were amazing. Love the retro style.

Don't Bring a Croc to a Gunfight Ups and Downs

Ups:

  • Graphics are excellent
  • Audio is insanely good
  • Controls super well
  • A bullet hell with a sword instead of a gun is a great concept that really worked out in execution

Downs:

  • Really nothing major that is objectively wrong with the game in my opinion. The only thing I would see as an improvement is a boss health bar. I died A LOT, so having some indication of how much better or worse I did compared to my previous runs would be nice

Overall, an excellent and really fun game!

Couldn't beat it, but I still love it, especially the visuals. My main criticism is that (spoilers) there's no clear indication of what bullets you can reflect with your sword.

Thanks!

unique fighting mechanics. i love the art style

OH! you need to hold the sword for a few seconds. I get it now

GREAT sounds and visuals. I can't find the "unconventional way of using the sword", so basically it's unplayable for me... what is it? I really want to beat this game
