Fun game! I included it in my compilation video series of all of the games from the Kenney Jam, if you’d like to take a look. :)Sorry just realized i posted it on the game page itself, didnt realize the submission comment page is distinct so ill post here again:
94 Kills, 10 max streak :D
ive only played like 1-2 of these type games sofar and didnt like them as much. But this one is nice cause it has also the strategical elements. sometimes u will let an enemy passthrough to take the powerup fast enough..
But can be more challenging as a non native english speaker i guess, a more readable font could have helped.
The good old typing
of the deadgameplay mechanic! Really enjoy it.Imho, the special power is a bit too long to type when I'm in a hurry. =)))
Anyway, great job! :D
Thanks for playing! Yes the random length of the curse (as well as the individual words to a lesser extent) is far too variable in this version. We'll be updating it after the jam so that the lengths and difficulties ramp up over time instead of being totally random. Thanks for the feedback!
So Mother is a curse eh? XD
So much good stuff here
Unique gameplay mechanic
Awesome retro graphics
Fitting audio
Can feel the buds of balance in the enemies and our attacks
Some people wrote they'd like the game in full screen
I downloaded the pc version and alt+enter worked just fine for that
Encountered a situation where multiple enemies had curses that started with the same letter and I couldn't choose the one that I really wanted to curse :(
Other than that a very solid game!
Ha! I have a feeling there was a reason I left Mother in there, but it escapes me now. Probably a 2 AM decision.
We were focused on being web-playable first and foremost because that's what we prefer. We had no idea people would prefer to download the game, or want to run it full screen. We didn't give much thought to desktop resolution (except to pick something that wouldn't be to large for most monitors). I'm glad it has some built-in full screen capabilities (thanks Unity). It is now obvious to me that a Windowed/Full Screen toggle is a required feature next time.
The starting letter issue is definitely a bug to work out. We're going to make each starting letter unique, which will limit us to only 24 attackers at once, but then we'll make up for it with speed and word length changes. That will also help with the late-game clutter when you have so many attackers you can't read anything.
Thanks for the feedback!
Fun game! I kept playing and playing and playing lol.
Good job!
Thanks for checking it out! It was exhasusting to test at times.
Yeah I bet! It wore me out just playing the game!
One thing I'll note. It was sometimes hard to see the words when they ended up on top of each other. When they overlap I'd suggest hiding one of them.
Anyways awesome concept and great game! You could easily turn that into a learn to type game as well!
Excellent game, great use of the theme !
Thanks! We tried to go a bit outside the box on the theme to stand out.
Damn, it is sooo good. I will count this one among best time killers.
Thank you!
My great-grandma a saw me playing this game and fainted from shock at the obscenities!
Very well done!
Shnookerdookies! I... I... I hope she's OK!
Great word list!
Thanks, I can't really take credit for it though as we mostly stole it from 1920s flappers.
Really great game with no noticeable glitches! It was a great spin on the theme and reminded me of those type to learn games from elementary school. The 'curses' were hilarious and some were surprisingly hard to spell correctly the first time under pressure.
Thank you! It's so true, there are some words that come up that I'm not sure I've actually ever managed to type correctly a single time after at least a hundred playthroughs (yes, I'm looking at you, "shnookerdookies").
Very fun game! Great idea and gameplay. Just one thing, sometimes I had a little trouble reading some words over some sprites from background.
Nice job guys!
Thanks for playing and thank you for the feedback! This is by far the most common complaint we've gotten so I'll address it first thing if there's an update. Do you think it would help if we made the background clutter darker?
You're welcome! I really liked the game.
The background is nice, I think it's better changing the letter color first, like blue or green instead yellow. If you could use a dark outline on this font, it would be even better! And for the Tips text when the game begins , a dialog box about the Monster Pen will really help.
One more thing, I don't know how difficult it would be, but if the game had a fullscreen mode, that would help on reading too!
+ Great game mechanic
+ Nice use of assets
+ Fun to play for a short while
+ Nice sounds and music
+ Fits really well with the theme
- Quite tiring!
- Some of the UI is hard to really pay attention to as you're so busy typing
Thank you for playing and for the kind words and great feedback! If you think your fingers got tired playing it, imagine testing it out over and over again amidst 48 hours of banging out code, haha! You make a very good point about how the UI can be hard to pay attention to, as your focus is lasered in to one point on the screen. I like to think that's part of the challenge, but if we make a future update I'll try to optimize the UI so you don't have to look too many places at once. I really appreciate you taking the time to write this!
No problem! I'm trying to give constructive feedback on all the games I play. I think with yours, having a list of shorter words for early stages in the game would help the learning curve and give users a chance to familiarise themselves with the UI and the mechanics, before hitting them with 12 letter words like gobbledegook!
"Difficulty" was definitely something we struggled with overall, but you're right. We were mostly focused on speed and quantity of enemies, but in retrospect ramping up the words would have helped too.
Make me remember the feeling of "typing of the dead" :)
Thank you, I haven't played that but my dev partner mikefictitious has and pointed out the same, so I hope it's a good thing? I think of it more as "Mavis Beacon Teaches Swearing."
Hi!
Damn, I loved the play on words, pun intended. There's a lot of mechanics hidden right there in plain sight and it's beautiful design wise. Seems like a lot of thought went into all the interactionss!!!
I liked the art style, mix and matching different asset packs and separating monochrome for enemies and color for useful items / powerups was a nice touch too!
I enjoyed the curses too. What the cabbage might be my go to expression to avoid cursing, XDDDD
Great one!
We really had a lot of fun with the puns and crude humor on this, and I hope it showed through? Honestly hard to tell sometimes if it's just an inside joke from sleep deprivation or actually funny! I'm really glad you enjoyed it and always happy to teach some new works-safe curse words!
Really innovative game for the theme, nicely done, this was the first game i played from this jam, and you really set the tone
It's truly an honor then! I hope the rest of your plays were enjoyable as well!
brilliant idea great gameplay i love it , love the curse s word in there hahaha.
Haha thank you, I'm glad you caught our terrible pun! Is it even a pun? I think it might be an even lower form of humor than that. Anyway, I'm delighted you enjoy it :)
Pretty cool take on the word typing genre! I enjoyed learning some new words and practicing my typing! My main comment would be on the font visibility. I struggled with i and l I think the most, but there were a couple other letters that tripped me for words I had never seen before and seemed almost nonsensical. Haha harder to guess the letter from context when you have no idea what it is.
Really polished and great work for 48 hours! Super impressive!
Thanks for checking it out, and excellent point about the font! I think there's an extra onus on us here to be clear since a lot of the words we chose are unfamiliar to most people. Really appreciate the feedback!
Lol after I realized there's so much wordplay going on in this game. "Curse Swords" Looool then the PG aspect of the game. I started laughing. not only that but when the word raspberry popped up I lost it.
Thanks for telling me i need to become a better typer.
Haha I'm glad you liked it and got the joke! Sometimes when play testing during development I'd type a few words out and just be unable to stop laughing at what I just typed. I should probably get some sleep though. :D
Interesting game! Felt great to play it, and the music sounds nice^^
Thanks. I found that song almost immediately and knew it was the one. The artist is credited on the Game Over window in the game, but I think I forgot to put it on the site. It is by Video Dungeon Boss by Kevin MacLeod. He's got a bunch of good stuff.
What a goofy and charming little game! And rolling for the "PG" version of this was a good choice, as every word elicited a good chuckle from me. Well done!
Thank you. It definitely didn't start off PG. We started writing it with the worst words we knew, but any list we found had to be filtered so heavily for racism, sexism, etc., they were honestly a pain to use. We new it would need a PG setting for sure. Then the PG setting became the default with an R-rated option. After play-testing it a ton with PG words it was honestly more fun so we took out the R-rated option entirely.
