I loved your take on the vampire survivor genre. The enemies are fun to kill, especially with the effect you made to erase the creatures, and the upgrades also add a lot of variety to the gameplay. Pretty impressive for the amount of time we had!

Developer(+1)

I'm glad you had fun playing! The nine days is always just enough time to make something decent, but never enough to do everything you want to do.

Submitted(+1)

I managed to win with all the upgrades and almost 1500 enemies defeated! :D

The game was super fun, I loved the art and effects, especially the enemies being erased with damage and the visualization of the next level when using the grenade.

Still, perhaps there should be a limit on how much the enemy can be erased before dying, because as there are many enemies, sometimes those with low health are almost imperceptible among the others.

Great game, congrats!

Developer

The erasing enemies has been a big issue for a lot of people. I think we knew our own game too well and didn't have problems with it because of how familiar we were with the game. Definitely something we need to work on!

Wow I love it so much!! The game is really fun and well polished. There's a lot of content too for just 9 days!

I love the eraser bomb so much, the visuals are so cool, seeing to the next level/page is such a cool idea, I also like how it affects the gameplay by doing a lot of damage but also restricting your own movement, so it's like a double edged sword.

For some criticism, the sounds were somewhat repetitive, maybe more pitch variation? Also maybe if I shoot a ton of slimes at once (within a few ms) I think it should only play 1 hit sound for them. I also sometimes got stuck inside the eraser grenade hole, I'm not sure if this was intended or a bug, but it was somewhat annoying.

It took me a while to find the final boss, I thought he might have not spawned but I eventually got him.  I do wish he was a bit harder too!

Really good entry!! I had a ton of fun playing through it :)

Developer(+1)

finding the boss can defiantly be tricky. The level generation I made for the last level can result in some really mazelike levels that take a while to explore. It sort of does the sound pooling you are talking about but its one play per frame. Could have probably go a bit more with that and only play once every few frames like you said. Getting suck isn't intended in your grenades but we didn't have enough time to find a solution for it. I'm glad you enjoyed the game

This was pretty fun! I liked the visuals, and overall concept with the inklings! I did get overrun quite quickly by them, but it made for some short fun runs for me.

Developer

Did you buy any of the upgrades in the shop? We didn't call attention to the shop icon in the upper left hand corner, so I've had to point out the icon to some family members while they were playing. Thanks for playing!

Awesome game, i just found the audio not playing properly when shouting and also noticed that in option, all sound sliders was named Volume so kind of hard to know what volume we change XD, you also can lock yourself when using the rightclick if you run into the projectile before it touch the grounds. Not being able to move during the duration of the erased part. On the last level i kind of not noticed the boss at all until quite a long time, either i'm blind or the game need a visual more stronger to view it properly around all those ennemy. The shops to buy our upgrade whenever we want was a nice idea for the wildcard. Some more polish to make it a smoother experience, that aside i really enjoy my time playing this

Developer

This was our first time getting a web build working for a project and I defiantly agree there were some audio issues some times. I ran into a case (that I could never repro reliably) where the audio would stutter. The grenade projectile collision was a rough part of the game. I really wanted to implement some one way collision. Then you could walk out of the holes. I did not have enough time to do that. I'm hoping to take some time after the jam to address some of the issues and features we could not get to.

Thanks for playing.

A lot of cool ideas ! Totally made sense to make a VS-like game and it is globally well implemented.

As someone mentionned I a had some trouble with the readbility, mainly from the enemies disappearing and not always knowing if there were dead or not. The damage counter appearing on top them is not that useful since they your sprites are their own healthbar and made me think that the aoe rotating erasers were doing no damage.

I also often forgot about grenades, spending my collectibles and leaving to next level. Since there is so much thing going on the screen it's hard to track those counters while clicking everywhere. Maybe audio feedback would been better put on this kind of things than on the enemies. The enemy sound was a bit agressive to be heard so much and so often.

Clicking around caused some problems to me as well, I wonder if making the grenades and clicked eraser automatically trigger on cooldown in the mouse direction instead of triggering on click would have made a smoother experience.

Still I enjoyed your game a lot, this is working really fine mechanically. There are cool ideas like grenades erasing the ground and I love the sketch menu.

Developer

Thanks for playing. All valid feedback. The damage numbers were a late at and we didn't have time to tune them so they worked nice with low damage erasers. None of us are audio people and we tend to struggle with getting the mix right for sounds. There is a sound when the portal appears but it can be covered up by all the other stuff that is going on. I had thought about making things trigger on their own but with the grenade holes having collision I thought it was best to leave that for the player to manage. You are able to hold down the attack buttons and have it trigger on cooldown though.

Given more time we'd spend some time on the audio mix. Fix some of the settings bugs (the sliders all have labels they just don't work on web). I'd also like to spend some time tweaking the erase on the enemies to see how that changes the feel. I think there is some potential around the enemies getting harder to track the closer to death but its not something we leaned into so it just seems out of place and more of a broken thing then a gameplay choice.

Thanks again for playing and the feedback

Neat game! I enjoyed the style, and it got a little overwhelming in a fun way!  The only issue I had was the mouse would sometimes leave the window when playing in the browser and stop working (or I'd click on something else and the game would be covered.

Developer

Ah, another person had the same mouse issue! 😔 Are you on Firefox too?  I'm glad you were still able to have fun.

Submitted

Yeah, Firefox

Pretty cool entry - it was interesting to see the mix with the "glitch" artstyle - I especially like the way the grenade explosion works. You've also packed a lot of mechanics in there, with all the shop upgrades+powerups in there. I found the sound effects a bit loud in comparison, took me a bit to find the right volume slider.
Btw, does changing the character in the beginning make any difference?
Nice job overall!

Developer(+1)

I agree the sfx are too loud. We'll need to do a better job with sound balance on the next game jam. The characters are purely an aesthetic choice. I wanted a way to track how many people played as Sadie vs Kai, but I'm not a programmer and nobody had time to put that tracking in there for me.

Submitted

Awesome work! I love survivor likes so you got me there!

Developer

Glad you liked it. I also like survivor games.

Thanks for playing

You did the erase thing on the intro card! I thought of it but prioritized other things haha. Bonus points for you.

Really cool adaption of Vampire Survivors. I like the gameplay and played for quite a bit. The upgrades were also nicely thought out.

I’m a little conflicted on the representation on enemy health. It was very cool to see them being erased as they lost health, but it also made them more difficult to see, maybe an outline that remains would be nice? I also found they they lingered a bit after death, stealing my focus from alive enemies. Small bug, but nothing game breaking is that the currency out of shop wouldn’t update after purchasing until you pick up another of the currency in game.

Overall, really well done. I had a blast playing. The art was really well done and the sound fits so well. (How dare you make me attack such cute sounding slimes).

Developer (1 edit)

Heh yeah I had done it right away before we even had an idea. Our artist saw when I had (it was just a left to right wipe at this point) and said oh can you make it like erase in strips. Cue spending way more time then I planned on that effect :-p.

I agree somewhat on enemy health we really wanted to sell the erase aspect of it (its also why they linger a bit after death) and so we ran with it. I think you are right figuring out a way to have the enemies more visible would make things more readable.

All the sfxs were made with a simple wave modulator like https://sfxr.me/

Thanks for playing!

I played this with keyboard & mouse and had a lot of fun! I tried it with the controller and movement was good, but none of the attacks worked. I went to the control remapping, tried to set the actions to controller buttons and chaos reigned. I think there may be some bugs in the remapping ;)

Oh, and forgot to say I really like the pencil art for the portraits and some other parts.

Developer

Hey thanks for playing. Controller support came late and the triggers don't work on web :(. The remapping screen could have definitely used some work but I wanted to try and get it in there. Our artist did an amazing job on all the art. The hand drawn UI really came together once we had everything converted away from the default godot skins. I learned a bunch about skinning UI in godot.

I really enjoy Vampire Survivor style games and this one is no different. I tried many times to do a no upgrade run, but just couldn't beat the final stage with so little damage. Eventually, I caved and bought up as many damage and movement speed upgrades as I could. Loved the theme of going through the storybooks and all of the puns were great. The art was vibrant and cute, though a few of the enemies blended in with the backround. All around a good time!

Developer

Thanks for playing. We were doing so upgrade runs for most of dev and the ending was too easy. We rebalanced the end in the last hours so your build had more of a payoff. I think with some tweaks a no upgrade runs could be possible but I think in the end it was the right call to make the ending a little more exciting.

Super cute game! Loved how colorful it was. I got all the upgrades and it did exactly what I was hoping for! >:D
I was completely invincible towards the end making a ring of death around me while hitting the boss. Getting the mirror bomb upgrades trapped myself a few times, so I had to stay mindful about how I was using it. Easy to work around though. And it was so cool seeing the next level through the whiteout bombs!
The little RNG ink splatters had great usages too! I'd be a goner without them. Best ones were getting health back, the total clearing of everything in view, especially paired with the magnet really made the game way more enjoyable. The one that made me bigger, the gummy bear, I was a little lost on — later realizing I could just crush everything under my feet, haha! Whoops! Too paranoid about getting hit to try it, but a great addition! It was still fun to think that the ink splatters could also harm me, making me more of a target to the enemies being in such a big form. (That's how I originally thought about it, not realizing what it did lol).
The enemies were a little hard to see the more they got erased. And those pesky dragonflies man!
Overall, cute art, great mechanics, and an enjoyable story! I could see myself playing it again for the upgrades ♥

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and the kind words. The gummy bear was originally just invincibility and when adding effects and sounds to make the power ups feel better our teammate made you grow big. Then he had the idea of making you able to stop enemies. He had unknowingly combined invincibility with another power up idea but it was better the way he did it. There wasn't anything that really explains what the power ups do and I agree the gummy bear isn't the most obvious. All the others have more immediate and obvious outcomes.

I also like making a wall of death with all the upgrades. I really want to solve the getting stuck in your attacks. It was a tough problem I tried a few things to solve but nothing really worked well enough to keep.

Love the theme inclusion and the games feels satisfying in the same ways vampire survivors does and I love it

Developer

Thank you! I'm glad we were able to fit the theme of erase into the vampire survivors style gameplay. I was a little worried at first it would feel disjointed, but my team did a great job making everything fit together.

Awesome key rebinding settings - thank you for implementing that! I thought this game had a cool idea and liked the small touches - as someone else pointed out, really liked how you could see the next level with the white out grenade. The audio was a bit choppy on the browser but otherwise performance seemed ok.

Developer

I'm glad you enjoyed it! We were excited to be able to implement a web version of the game for the first time. Hopefully the web experience with our next one will have a few less kinks in it.

Submitted

Beautiful art, addictive gameplay. I got all upgrades in the first level before realizing there is an arrow pointing to the portal :)

Developer

Oh no! At least you didn't completely miss the portal.

Developer

The OG design was the portal was going to be hidden under one of those ink blobs... It was not fun :)

A Portrait of Doriana(sp?) White, so good! (all the chapters were good).  Amazing entry all around!  LOVE LOVE LOVE gamepad support!  And rebindable controls!  One minor fix, they all said "Action" but could be matched up, and web builds don't handle triggers (4.x issue 3.x used to work).  Also the sfx really overwhelmed the music.  So much panache, keep it up!

Developer

Thanks for the great feedback! We found out the hard way that triggers don't work in browser. I'll have to ask our programmers about the key descriptions showing up as "action." They show up correctly in editor, but sure enough they show up saying "action" in the exe as well. 😳 Despite the bugs, I'm glad you had fun with it! I enjoyed making all of the punny book covers. 😊

Submitted

The storybook style art is wonderful!

Developer

Thank you so much! It was a lot of hard work, but I had a lot of fun making it. 😊

Submitted

Very fun game, a great take on vampires ;)

I made to the end, the art-style and the sound are very good, gameplay is great (with the bonuses and such), the scope is also pretty wild for a jam game. I really enjoyed it, there also a pun about one guy that I like a lot (not gonna say who :)), I think this is one of the contenders for the jam.

One thing that might be caused by the web-build, the mouse capture didn't worked for me on Firefox, so sometimes I would panic while I clicked outside the game screen, but not much of a problem.

Super fun and polished, great job.

Developer

Thank you so much! This was the first jam we were able to successfully create a web build for, so it didn't cross my mind that we should be testing on other browsers. Whoops. Thanks for pointing out the mouse problem on Firefox. I've added it to our list of known issues. I'm glad you were still able to have fun regardless!

Submitted

Banger art as usual. I thought it was really well done how you could see the next level by using the whiteout grenade too. What a nice touch there! I'm also a sucker for survivor type games (and this game reminded me of my very first game so I'm biased) but I really enjoyed this! I thought the pickups and abilities were very well done too.

Developer

The holes were one of the first things we thought of and worked on. It turned out really well. It was made by our team member fvzappa and this was his first game jam! This was a rough theme for us. Took us a really long time to get going on a game idea and it only game together in the last few days.  Thanks for playing!
