Nice submission! Very similar to your previous one though. Given that you overscope in both cases - do you think you might do a full game outside of jam? I think you do the "exploration" part really well in both cases.
The delayed response was because I’ve been frantically working on the extension for it. I thought I was being clever; wild jam, Brackeys and MVM all started at the same time so I thought I could do the core for the first two and spend a few weeks polishing for the third but trying to get what I want out of a metroidvania is hard on my brain and time consuming so even the update version, which you can check out here https://paco-orwin.itch.io/revisions-ex if you’re interested. It’s a big update but still maybe a third of what I was aiming for.
At least for me, I always intend to revisit past jams (and technically I still can) but for this one this plan has been working so far, though I don’t have much a of a plan past this point. Writing all this up has been really helpful, at this point I have all the abilities in, I have several rough ideas for levels so I think I actually have an idea what the rest of the game looks like instead of vaguely “making it better”.
So that’s a very long-winded yes.
Honestly, I see the vision. The gameplay is definitely there! I can't wait to see if you'll expand on this :)
I liked the progress, I just missed some background music and some sfxs. I arrived at the purple floor area and picked up, I believe, the last ball. It turned out really cool, congrats!
Indeed you got the the end, thanks for giving it a try. Totally agree, I really need to prioritize adding some audio in the middle of the week so it doesn’t feel so empty when I inevitably run out of time at the end.
Good effort!
I liked that it felt like there was a world there
But also that I could see you ran out of time HARD.
Feel slightly less bad about my own entry now lol
Nice, even if you didn’t enjoy it (not that you said you didn’t but in case you didn’t), I count it as a win that it ameliorated your own feelings. That’s part of why I entered it anyway, trying to get past my own issues with perfection (or even a finished product). Obviously I want to make something people enjoy and do the best that I can but feedback is so important, nothing is every really “ready” and it’s not like this is going to cause harm (i.e. don’t rush safety tests for things like vehicles, this is just a videogame). Earlier jams I focused on mechanics and player movement and this is only the second where I’m trying to make a cohesive world and actually drew out a map (on paper!) before making anything digitally. I always learn a ton during make the game, so even if it falls short I get something out of it, but it’s also nice to hear what I’m trying to improve is bubbling up a little.
Haha I liked it!
And yea, I feel exactly the same as you :)
I tend to worry a lot about getting things 'just right', and then never really completing, or sometimes doing them at all.
This is a great way to improve without worrying
And I'm glad that I found a kindred spirit :)
One cool thing taht stood out to me is there was some dynamic animation while jumping - it looked like the character tries to grab the ledge if front of it as it jumps. I thought that was neat
Thanks for playing, I’m glad you liked the “ledge grab”. I’ve been wanting to start working with IK and that ended up as a happy accident while initially tweaking it. Hopefully post jam update has a lot more realtime secondary animation.
Really like the 3rd person 3D view, controls were a little hard to get used to and the first saws were tough but got through. Unfortunately it looks like the game is incomplete and didn't hear any sound/music which would have added to the experience. Thanks for submitting
Thanks for playing! Another comment made me realize I left in my “gamepad debug” controls, which I’m hoping is what you struggled with, WASD for movement then IJKL for camera, it’s like right stick on a gamepad. You can actually just use the mouse to look around like a regular PC game (though I’m finding that sometimes the web version can loose the cursor and then prevents the camera from full rotation). At least I hope that was your issue or was there something I missed with WASD + mouse?
Unfortunately no sound (just options in the template I forgot to remove). Definitely updating this one post jam, so many things left unfinished!
"I am incapable of keeping scope down" <- extremely relatable words
Great work, I like the level design- for me personally it's one of those game dev areas I'm a little lacking in, so I'm impressed you made this so fun to explore- and the implementation of erasing is good!
Thanks for playing! I’m really glad to hear you liked exploring. I’m trying to get better at level design so it’s heartening to hear it’s showing through even in this rough state.
Nice start to what seems like it would become a fun puzzle game! The character was really cute. There were a few times I was confused, but I eventually figured everything out and got the final orb on the second floor. I totally sympathize with making the scope of the game too big. Go big or go home, right? 😂
Thanks for the encouragement! Sometimes I think “maybe I should practice the skill of scoping, making a plan, and sticking to it”. Then I come up with something ridiculous and shiny and thing next time, I’ll try those other things next time.
Honestly very cool game. Only thing I had issues with was the mouse/camera, if I left the screen it seemed to bug out a bit. I think using the itch fullscreen instead of f11 might fix that but I'm not sure
I love the lil buggy boi
Thanks for playing! I’m assuming you played the web version? One thing I’ve belatedly found is sometimes the web version doesn’t capture the mouse correctly so you see the cursor and can’t turn all the way, is that what happened to you? Glad you liked the bug, I hope to do a better art pass on him post jam.
Thank you for intuitive controls! I liked the storybook + erasing approach to the theme. I got stuck at the point of trying to erase the 2nd word (derelict, IIRC) to proceed past the rubble in the castle. Still, fun entry!
(Also, you should add a cover image to your game!)
Thanks for playing and the feedback. FWIW you essentially got stuck at the last thing to do. The second storybook erase went in just before the deadline so I’m not surprised it didn’t work. I have a lot more planned for post jam. Thanks for the cover reminder, I normally try to do that by the end of the first rating day but kept putting it off till now.
Cool game! I liked how you had a couple of different erasing mechanics implemented.
Thanks for playing! I knew my original plan was too ambitious but I’ve got a lot more erasing planned for post jam, hopefully you’ll check it out.
