Theme interpretation
Every BloodMoon, a long-imprisoned Lich raises his armies of the dead to terrorize humanity. Simply fending off the undead has been fruitless: so the people turn to a MOONSHOT SOLUTION. They will send the Paladin to release the Lich from his secure prison so that he might destroy him forever. It is a risk, but it is the only way to truly save them.

Great game ! The art style is really cool and it was really fun to explore the whole map.

The mouse sensitivity could be a bit lower though :)

Developer

Thanks again for streaming it.  That was super helpful.

Nice game even though I got nauseous after playing for a while... couldn't adjust sensitivity! Anyhow please find my gameplay video review:

Thanks so much for playing and thanks especially for recording it. That is really helpful

Really awesome game! It truly brought me to Wolfenstein 3D or Hexen times.

I had a blast playing it through the end! I love the graphics, sound effects and the simple quest.

Just a few small comments, the text was a bit blurry, the mouse scroll a bit too sensible and a mini-map feature would be much appreciated.

Great job!

PS: I’ve attached a screenshot just because it’s so cool

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Oh man a mini map would be awesome!

I went back and forth about the text to be honest. I wanted it pixelated so it didn't stick out, but at the scaling I did it ended up a little too blurry. I think I really just needed to pick a pixelated font and do no scaling on it.

Thanks so much for playing and providing feedback! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Wow - this was a pleasure to play through, i kicked down every door i could! Voice acting was a nice touch, the prologue was short and to the point, level designs and progression felt good and the final boss twist took me by surprise!

Our team might look at making the transition from 2d to 3d for up coming jams and will probably use this project as a reference! Thank you so much!

Developer

Wow than you so much! I'm really glad you liked it.

This was an absolute joy, the visuals and the animations are spectacular and the gameplay was great too! There were a few things that didn't seem intentional like the arrows through the door (though I see others have mentioned it) and also the fact that one can attack the final boss while he is speaking by doing a few attacks to start moving again.

Speaking of the final boss, it would be nice if the game could tell if you had already tried it before and allow one to skip past the dialogue and start the fight right away. Also, the Colosseum monster was a toughie, but super satisfying to beat, there are just times where some of the hits felt a little unfair because they are so sudden.

The designs of all the enemies are great, and the environments look really nice as well. I appreciate the voice acting in the intro too, it was a nice touch. Overall, a truly fun entry!

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you so much for the feedback! Skipping the boss intro the second time is a really great idea. I'll also have to look into the attack-while-he's-talking thing, as well as a whole host of other bugs in that fight.

Thanks again for the review and especially the feedback. I'll be sure to review yours next.

Wow, this was a blast! Really polished, loved the voice acting and character models. Also love the fact that it was done in Godot. Will totally have a look at your code when we decide to make the jump to 3D games. Brilliant work!

Developer

Thank you so much!

Yeah I am really liking Godot. I'm new to game dev (tho not new to programming) and Godot has been really intuitive to learn.

Voice acting in a jam submission? Good-quality voice acting? I’m impressed! Not to mention the great graphics and the fun gameplay. Even the story is good, although I note that Wizard Gordon—I mean, Nodrog—gives a slightly different version to what you wrote, never mentioning the “risk releasing the Lich for a shot at destroying him”. But maybe that’s intentional?

A few oddities—I’m positive an arrow hit me before I opened the door between me and the archer. I died a couple of times in the Colosseum, seemingly just from kicking the enemy; I finally realised that I got hurt if I got close before kicking him, but there didn’t seem to be anything (like an attack animation from him) to explain why I was getting hurt. And the final boss seems to freeze up permanently if he gets stunned.

Developer

Wow, thanks for the extensive review. The arrows and final boss I was aware of, but I'll have to look into the colosseum issue.

If you're curious, I spawn the arrows outside the skeleton's hit box, so if they're up against a door the arrow will spawn on the other side. I meant to fix this by having the skeletons only enter their "attack" state when they have line of sight to the player but I ran out of time.

As to the boss... something is wrong with his state machine but I'm not quite sure what yet.

Thanks again! I really appreciate the feedback.

Developer

Oh and I definitely didn't notice the voiceover differing from the text by that much, so thanks for pointing that out!

Submitted

I meant that the in-game dialogue (spoken and written) differs from what’s posted here on the “rate this game” page. Here, it says that the people know they’re risking releasing the Lich. In the game, Nodrog doesn’t mention that, just asking the Paladin to go fight the Lich.

It’s only at the final fight that it’s implied (even then I don’t think it’s said outright!) that the Lich is going to be freed if you don’t defeat him. I did wonder whether it might have been intentional, and Nodrog was being an unreliable narrator in leaving that out.

Developer

Ahhh, I see what you mean. Yeah, I updated the text a little after to try to make the theme adherence more obvious. It was too late to update the game sadly.

Oh, and lest you think I’m just here to complain, here’s how much I like the game: I mapped out the maze in the Graveyard. (I thought of mapping the whole game, but this was the bit where I really needed it!) Here’s the map.

Developer

Holy geez this is awesome! Did you notice that the bricks show you the right path? Maze would have been a lot easier if it didn't loop I think.

Submitted

I didn’t notice it while playing, but I started wondering if that was meant to be the case while I drew it up!

Also, I didn’t actually get lost (much) in the maze, but I’m a bit of a completionist (…just a little bit…), and it was bugging me thinking that I might not have explored the whole thing.

Developer

If there had been more time it would have been fun to add some secrets to the maze. A programmer room or something.

Very nice! Impressive!

I have never played a game like this before. My favorite part has to be how it looks. The voice acting, the gameplay, the enemy design, all of it is great, but I absolutely adore the graphics. Amazing job, and the game was just the right length for a game jam game. I honestly had such a good time I can't help but smile now!

Developer

Wow, thank you so much.  I had a ton of fun designing it.  I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Man, your game is so fucking awesome, congrats

As someone who is terrible at fast paced FPS, it didn't matter one bit in this game. I had sooo much fun! I just loved the voicing, graphics and the smooth controls. Great job! :D

Developer

Thanks so much! I am also terrible at fast paced fps lol.

This was absolutley brilliant. The voice-acting had the right level of camp,  it really captured the doom feel.

Developer

Thank you!

Added a Mac build, post-submission-deadline. No game/code changes made.

Hey great job! really awesome game, I really like the graphics! The movement seemed pretty fast though and the music did not quite match the intense gameplay. But overall really fun!

Thank you for the feedback!
