bar theme is great, but too short. character art is great, but dungeons are all over the place. so it goes in a jam, but i really like the card battles. i think taking some inspiration from crpg and tactics games when it comes to entering battle mode and utilizing the environment in combat could make the combat system here something pretty special.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing our game and the feedback.

Bar theme song is very short as you said. I have personally come to enjoy steam punk swing and was very pleased with that track. We will be expanding on it post jam for sure.

We have plans to expand on the dungeons a fair bit. Was the topic of conversation this morning. This includes more interesting environment graphics and layouts playing into tactical aspects. The play between cards and dungeon crawling feels like a really interesting aspect to explore.

"This isn't just a cross bow, it's damn well furious" Best line in any game, ever. Awesome art, music, and humor. And the game was fun too :)

Nice humor and graphics, movement was smooth and the battle system was interesting and stood out from the competition. But I did not like the battling that much, it felt a bit slow with selecting the right cards and so I often made mistakes, which made the battles quite hard for me. But actually, this was a very cool entry.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback. Glad you enjoyed the humor and graphics. The card battling might not be for everyone we understand that will consider if there is a way to make the UI there smoother.

i like this game.

reminds me of slay the spire a bit, if slay the spire was a dungeon crawler, and if slay the spire was a comedy game.

i spent entirely too much time petting the cat.

Developer

Haha I love that everyone is getting distracted with Mr Mittens.

A comical comparison to Slay The Spire is awesome.

Thanks for playing the game and the feedback.

Prior to a month ago I hadn't played any card based games. Thankful the few I've played have now prepared me. It's a good game.  I tried for a while to get Mr Mittens but haven't found the right combination.

Developer

Thanks for playing and the feedback. Hehe Mr Mittens is unlocked by just petting him in all 10 ways available, glad that kept you distracted a bit.

HostSubmitted(+2)

Very polished game all around! Gorgeous art and great music. I am impressed with the implementation of the card based combat. It very solid and fun to play! I think I spent way too much time petting the "cat". :) Great job!

Developer

Thanks for the positive feedback and for hosting the jam. We had a lot of fun making the game.

Hehe Mr Mittens was a lot of fun to write, nice to know the distraction was a welcomed one. If you pet him in all 10 different ways you unlock a card and can take him with you into the dungeons.

HostSubmitted(+1)

Oooooh. I suspected there was an easter egg there but I guess I didn't pet him enough! Cool stuff :)

Developer

Yes with him and Bug Eye both. Once the Dialog system was in it was easy to add stuff like that so I indulged a little.

This one sets the level higher again! Well done!

What I liked:

  • Party of 3 people and level progression - Makes fighting for EXP meaningful and one cares more about the characters
  • The overall art style - Very good comic style here, reminding me a bot of Shakes and Fidget. Well done!
  • Boss Enemy mechanic - Getting new Cards from bosses makes progressing the dungeon meaningful again and grinding for cards applies to the human instinct of "I wanna collect that all!!!!"
  • Dead in fight is not dead in dungeon. That is a super rewarding technique, although I wished for a revive card in some of the rare situations where a party member dies.  Maybe that comes later? I have only played 40 minutes. and about 15 Dungeons ^^.
  • Level based dungeons -> super cool to give me the choice just to grind or get some challenge here.
  • Bar scene between the runs -> So many cool features and Gimicks here, love it!

What can be improved?

Since this entry sets the level higher, the following improvements are a bit more high level

  • Give the player a short introduction what the blue and red symbols on cards mean. I got it sorted out after the first dungeon, but still it would be nice.
  • It's not clear to me if I get gold from every encounter or just at the end. Showing my gold during a run would be nice.
  • The level generation. Although fitting for sewers and dungeons, it felt a bit empty here and there. Just some small assets could help to spice things up. Also maybe some doors.
  • Show some indications of the EXP you get for every encounter, its more rewarding that way (for me)
  • With a bit more development time: More types of dungeons and enemies.
  • And of course the master of all improvements in a card game: Level up cards ^^

But all of this is not needed since the game is very cool as it is and encourages replaying and playing more. Definitely one of the top most entries this year for me.

Well done!

Thanks for such thorough feedback. Lots of useful points. There is a revive card you can play the Banana card can revive a player in combat but clearly we have to do a better job on explaining the cards. I am considering a short form and long form description for cards. Each can have such unique behavior the cards have to be able to explain themselves.

You absolutely right about the dungeons being too bland it was just something we didn’t have time to address but we will be now.

Feedback and juice will help a lot with the communication of gold and xp and even damage. There is a lot we can do there.

Thanks again for playing the game and giving us feedback.

Great artwork. Really nicely done with great humour throughout. The levels themselves were a bit flat and blocky but the textures looked good and in a consistent art style. The card system was confusing at first and could have done with a tutorial of some kind. Having said that, once we got into it it played out pretty well. Again the humour in the card wording and the actions was really good and made us smile. Music was good, the sound effects weren't very present. Dan (our artist) doesn't want me to say this but I'd (our programmer) really like the font on the cards to be the same as the main font, which is really nice and the card font, eh. not so much. We had fun playing this. It's amazing what you guys have done in 7 days, it really is. Great job!

Developer

Thank you for the feedback. You absolutely right it needs a bootstrapping part just to get players to see all the pieces. The levels were completely bland as you say. Just a bunch of blocks, have to give some thought to making the more interesting.

Ah the card font nicely spotted we had an issue where the font didn’t render well on the cards. There was no heavier weight version or it to use either. So we had to switch it out was a rushed change and the replacement was just so basic.

So glad the humor resonated that was probably the biggest risk for me personally (Programmer on the project) I normally make computer’s laugh at my programming attempts, not people.

The game has a great atmosphere. It do feel more like a card game than a dungeon crawler. Great work with the characters, lobby and UI.

If you go from the map - back-Map the sprites for the locations is lost.

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for the feedback. You right it is more card then dungeon crawler. We had features planned to the dungeon but the card systems were just so large all the time was chewed up by that.

Now we rested will put those features in and more.

Thanks for the finding that bug. Added to the backlog.

I stopped after defeating a bunch of bosses, very fun game overall.

I feel like the dungeons probably could have been smaller, at some point in the game you just want to encounter the various bosses.

One thing I really like is that you went with a party for this game, that's not a given when using card mechanics.

I love the monster sprites and specially the character portraits by the way.

Developer

Thanks you for the feedback. You spot on with the dungeons being too large or perhaps just not interesting enough for the scale. We will work on the size of those dungeons and make them more interesting. Also want to add different types of randomizers to make for more variety.

The party is key to dungeons crawlers for us plan is to have many other party members you can recruit and choose the four you take with.

I think this has a lot of potential. The whacky humor seems to be appealing to a larger audience but the game really needs some QoL improvements like a tutorial dungeon and less buggy UI.

Developer

Hey thanks for the feedback, not aware of any UI bugs could you share a screen shot? Keen to see what you referring to so we can address it after the jam voting closes.
