How does the game fit the theme?
You can swap to a second character that is more powerful and has a higher chance of dropping healing items on kill, but eventually brings your HP to 1.

What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
We repurposed a pixel perfect camera that one of us made for a previous project, and the song that plays at the end of the game.
Also used 5x5 rounded font. https://www.dafont.com/5x5-rounded.font

Great game and well made ^ ^

Good game but I wished the dash buttons was not the left shift button as it was awkward pressing whilst dodging and attacking.

Love the art and music! Really created a cool aesthetic and the monster sprites were generally creepy. Great job!

Submitted(+1)

Love the art! Combat was a bit hard for me at first but great game, well done.

A really well made game, very polished. I loved the level design/exploration, the combat is super fun and visuals and audio are great! My only problem was dashing with shift, I found it a little weird and didn't really get used to it. Anyway, impressive job!

This game is really well done. I really like how the enemies have a part of the music, that is only activated when they are attacking you!

nice game, really liked the art and music.

Really well done music and art! Also I don't know if I just suck at this control scheme but I had an additional difficulty factor trying to fight the enemies because of the way the keys were. Having a health bar for the boss would also be helpful because I had no idea how much longer I had to fight him for.

I really love the Risk mechanic! The controls are easy to handle and the art style is really great too! I think this game is really polished for a one week jam, very well done!

Cool game - I enjoyed the tree jump scare a lot lol.

It would have felt a lot more powerful if I had to put Risk on straight after exiting that cave, and immediately be faced with more enemies than I could previously handle, but obliterate them with the new strength that Risk grants me.

Well done on the overall game, and for the enemy variety that you managed to include.

I very much agree about the Risk thing! I really wanted to add an encounter like that, but sadly we didn't have enough time towards the end. We'll look into it if we update the game later. Thanks for playing!

Really fun game, liked the wide range of enemies and the fun character of Risk. Agree with other comments about the combat controls feeling a bit overcrowded on one side of the keyboard, think maybe it would feel a little easier if the controls were even just WASD + JKL or something, but overall it didn't dampen my experience at all and I still think this game was incredibly fun and well made :) Nice work

Cool game with great art. My only issue is that the controls are unintuitive for me, otherwise a great game!

Submitted(+1)

Slick game. I had some trouble mastering the combat but enjoyed it.

Combat felt good, the world looked interesting, the art and music are a vibe too. I loved Risk's character too, a murderous goober. All around a great entry.

My only issue has been the controls, I'm on QWERTZ keyboard which means my Y and Z are swapped, so the tutorial messages incorrectly told me to press Z but I had to use Y, it would be easy to assume the game is just broken.

The combat was designed well and it ended up being a lot of fun. I think having more of a reason to switch between the forms would be really cool and that RSK could be made riskier somehow!

Here's a video of me playing your game. Thanks for sharing!

It was fun to watch you playing the game. You were really good!

Submitted(+1)

This game gets one of my best ratings yet!! It is so well designed with a great balance between challenging and fun. RSK is such a fun mechanic that suits the theme so well. Good job!!

Submitted(+1)

Insanely solid entry and I cannot believe how underlooked this one has been so far! The art is polished, the combat feels great, without even considering that this is a JAM GAME. Really enjoyed it, one of my highest rated for sure.

Developer

Thank you so much!

Pretty cool game that somehow reminds me of those childhood snes game. Pretty cool combat but the button set up is kinda unnatural to me so I struggled quite a bit with it. Maybe it would be better to have an option with wasd + left/right click maybe?

Developer

Yeah, I think controls has been the main complaint that we've seen. So if we update it after the jam we'll definitely look into alternative control schemes.

Submitted(+1)

What's the actual scheme based on though? I remember some gameboy/ps1 simulator does use a ZXCV + directional arrow for control (z is usually dash and x is jump), though you can just remap it to your references

Developer (1 edit)

Honestly, I think it basically was based on Deltarune. SHIFT might have been a weird choice but the whole thing seemed to work better for me than it did for others.

EDIT: Based on Deltarune in the sense of using arrow keys and ZXC. Chapter 3 had does retro sections as well that made me want to make a Zelda-esque game as well.

Submitted(+1)

Knowledge acknowledged. So that's where it stems from. Also I have a short shift keyboard (with a whole button between the shift and the zx button so it kinda makes it challenging as well), maybe that's partially why

Developer

Yeah I didn’t consider that extra button since I don’t have one, but some of my friends had the same issue after playing it

Finland/Sweden - keyboard layout
This is the layout that I used, the Swedish/Finnish layout so it may be a bit different for other places

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Yeah funnily enough I actually am Swedish lol, my current keyboard just has ÖÄÅ in the same place but other stuff is different

Pretty cool game, I like Hyper Light Drifter style ammunition recover thing but I couldn't finish because my game crushed.
I got Risk guy and go to the mine in the beginning, and after gaining big heart I punch some rocks and game crushed (I was on html). You might wanna check this out.

Developer

Oh, that's unfortunate! We'll check it out if we ever update the game after the jam.

Submitted(+1)

I thought the controls felt a tad off but aside from that I think this game is great! Visuals and audio were very solid and the mechanic is unique and perfect for the theme.
