How does your game represent Mode?
"Mode" inspired us to take the same basic premise and shift the player's experience according to the different genres they would play. Whether they are fighting the slug, running away from it, or having a dance off, we attempted to deliver a humorous and engaging experience that would be memorable for its different modes of play.

The initial pitch involved random switches between game genres triggered by changes in music, as if somebody was playing with a radio while you fought a monster. Over the last few weeks, we honed the concept into SLUG MODE.

We hope people have fun playing SLUG MODE, and we know that our team learned a lot throughout its development. Thanks again to Big Mode for inspiring us to put so much effort into the jam. It was a lot of fun and we hope Big Mode hosts another jam soon!

Cool stuff. I tought it would be some minigames and over and then it mixes and matches with the dating sim stuff incredibly well. Loved it!

This was really fun, I have played a few games that swap between minigames but I loved how different the 4 genres you chose were. The slug theme tied them all together and they all felt very polished!

Super cool idea with great execution.  It reminded me a bit of WarioWare in that I had no idea what sort of game was coming next and I had to quickly figure out what was going on.  The dating sim was an inspired touch, too.  I'm not usually one for inside jokes and niche references, but we're all Dunkey fans here so I'd say it was tasteful.

I have two pieces of constructive feedback: the first is that I didn't know that the 2D platformer spikes were spikes until I landed on them.  Take that with a grain of salt though, I'm pretty dumb.  The second is about the health system (not lives.)  I'm not sure what determines how much health you'll have at the start of a level, but on my second go at the 2D platformer, I lost in a single hit.

Overall, I'm impressed by the variety on offer and how polished everything looked and felt given the scope of your project.  You've made something really special here, and I have a feeling I'll be coming back to this one soon.

Thanks for the kind words! We were actually split internally on how far we wanted to take the references, but decided at least a few were warranted given the context of the jam. We're glad you agree and weren't put off by them!

Originally, we were going to have the spikes in pits in the ground, but ultimately they were made part of the main landscape and the concept of the player falling into a pit was dropped entirely due to time constraints. One of our team members was also confused by the spikes during playtesting, but we never went back to redo the sprite. We'll definitely keep this in mind for the future if we have a similar obstacle in a different game. It probably should have been something very traditional and obvious given the scope and speed with which we expected the player to adapt to each mode.

There actually isn't any health during the platformer, which in retrospect we could've probably made more obvious. The only real lose condition is touching the slug. All the other obstacles do is temporarily stun you. In an abstract way, your distance from the slug is kind of like your health bar.

The player always has full health at the start of every mode, but the slug's health left depends on whether you won or lost the previous round. For example, if you lose the shmup and the slug has half its health bar left, the next time you play the shmup, you will still be in the same "phase" as before and the slug will still have half health, but the player will have full health again. If you win in any mode, you will have been moved onto the next phase of the mode with a bump in difficulty, and the slug's health is fully restored. For the runner, since there is no health bar, we tracked how long you had played the runner and ensured that the player would pick up where they left off in terms of time (ex: if the runner is supposed to last 30 seconds and you lost 15 seconds in, you only need to survive another 15 seconds to win upon re-entering the mode).

I really enjoyed how polished, yet goofy this one was. The sprite work was also incredible. Sadly the slug seemed to not enjoy my rizz :/ Overall excellent game!!!

Really charming game!  The dating sim mixed in with the more "gamey" genres I think is what puts this game over the top and makes it really stand out and it really adds a lot in terms of texture and pacing.

very fun game, the pixel art was amazing especially the colours, and i really enjoyed the difficulty curve as it was challenging but not to challenging at the end. The story was cool as well. Good job!

Great artstyle, i love how clean it is. At first i thought the auto-shooting would put me off, but it actually worked really well because i could focus on just dodging attacks. Great game.

This is a fun one, I like the variety and how each game looks and play very different but they all feel unified by the graphics style and the general sluggery of it all. I really appreciated the main menu and how pressing the tape recorder buttons is used to activate a menu option, excellent diagetic design, and I was glad to find the skip button that lets you play a single minigame afterwards, that's the kind of detail that could have easily fallen by the wayside during the jam, so great attention to detail getting that in there.

Everything's so cool! And really nice artstyle too. Doing all those game modes and combining them into a cohesive experience must've took a lot of work. My only complaint is that the Metal Slug mode player hitbox is wonky coming from someone who plays shmups (most shmups have hitboxes a lot smaller than the sprite, but this is just a subjective design decision).

Loved this game! So much I want to gush about. In no particular order:

  • Artwork is stellar all around. So many amazing details presented wonderfully. The checkerboard environment of the slug chase, the slug date's facial expressions, the lil dancing guy's animations, all great stuff.
  • Each game was genuinely just FUN, and I had zero issues with the controls. Each minigame it threw at me was just pick-up-and-play.
  • The game is very funny, was hanging on to every word of my slug date.
  • Loved the vibes of the main menu! Something about the pixellated posterized cassette tapes and wind chimes just works.

Well done!
