Haha nice entry and nice interpretation of the loop concept. I also like how the controls are really simple but so complex combined with the mechanic. Nicely done!

Very simple and challenging. Nice game!

This game was so hard for me, but super rewarding too. Making a game that's hard but makes you wanna keep playing can't be easy, so way to strike a great balance. An interesting take on a classic and the art and music are cool too (love that effect when you catch your tail).

You managed to make a fun challenging game using only one button for the controls.  Great job!

Fun game! Love the gameplay loop (No pun intended).

Main criticism is you can get stuck bashing your head into a wall and die. It would be nice to have an indicator to say which way the snake is going to turn (Maybe a tongue curving in the direction?)

Nice take on the snake game. One thing I love is how it feels like its being played in the BIOS  when fullscreened (not saying the art is horrible, just that it fits for a classic) Also the music + effects when you're near your tail are incredibly tempting, makes it so much harder somehow. Other than that theme is well executed

Beat level 1 btw B)

good game, but  I feel it was a bit difficult to understand, but other than that I loved the art, music, and the unique gameplay

So hard but really cool, I like it a lot!

Great game! It was hard at first, but once I properly learned the controls and dedicated some time to master them, it was even harder. However, despite its difficulty, I still wanted to play more. Great submission for the game jam! 10/10

Thanks a lot for giving it a try! I got a chance to watch you play on twitch and it was really helpful feedback.

Ohh… so you’ve seen me fail live.. haha I went back to your game off-stream and was finally able to beat it. Great job!

Developer

Haha no I would not call it a fail at all. If anything it's more a failure of my game design. I probably need to put some easier levels in the beginning to help players get used to the controls. Thanks a lot for giving it another try, and I'm super impressed that you beat it.

Some similar stuff as people mentioned below in regards to both controls and flashing tail indicators, and I really think a simple way to help would just be to have an open tutorial zone where ya can't really die, and you can just learn control feel. Cause once I got a feel for it, I dug it, but it did take me maybe five deaths before I considered myself capable of surviving a bit. Really love the art, and am excited to see what else you do in the future!

Developer

Thanks a lot for the feedback and glad you liked it. A tutorial zone is a great idea.

Fun game! It took me a while to understand I needed to hold down a button to turn, but after that it was fun. The only thing I would want is some way to get out of a repeating wall bash where I have no path to turn away. Well done.

Developer

Yes I agree it can be frustrating to get stuck somewhere with no way to avoid repeatedly hitting the wall. Haven't thought of a good solution to that yet. Thanks a lot for playing and for the feedback!

An interesting take on the classic game of Snake. In practice, I wasn't a huge fan of the one-button control scheme, however I do appreciate how it creates the feeling of slithering back and forth which is pretty fitting for a snake.

As for the objective, I found it a bit unclear as to when I would be able to try and eat my tail. There were pretty obvious visual and audio cues for when it would happen, but I often found the game would sort of flicker in and out of this state which made me unsure of if there was a time window or if it was based on how much food I had eaten recently.

Visually speaking, the game looks pretty nice. The visual effects for when you catch your tail were really, really cool!

Well done overall!

Thanks a lot for the comments. I agree the one button control has its downsides but I stuck with it for a few reasons including the slithering motion (glad you noticed it!). There's definitely room for improvement.

You have a good point about the state flickering back and forth. The way the mechanic works under the hood is by checking whether the snake is crossing four lines, north, south, east, and west, branching out from the center. If 3 out of 4 of the lines are crossed then the game tells you to catch your tail. The idea was to force the player to get long enough and then 'loop' around the entire level. I appreciate the feedback about the flickering though and have some ideas on how to improve it.

Also really glad you liked the tail catching visuals :) I actually repurposed the same particle effect that I used for the pickups, just tweaked some of the parameters and spawned the particle effect over the entire snake.

Ah, I see. That's an interesting approach! Also good reuse of the same visuals for the tail. Definitely leaves quite an impression when you complete a stage.

This was a really inventive take on the theme. Once you get the hang of the controls it feels really intuitive. Great game!

The turning is a bit aggresive, though it is cool to see that the snake loops perfectly when you don't turn.

Developer

Glad you noticed that :) Thanks for the feedback.

Once you get a hang of the controls, it was hard to put to down! I think adding some type of health bar or some other type of indicator on how many times you can hit the wall would be helpful, since I didn't know what the metric was for the player's HP (I think it's based off the tail length, but it doesn't seem to be 1-1 with the food pickups, which is a little confusing). I never managed to make ti past the first level, but I really enjoyed what I played! The color scheme is great too :)

Developer

You're right, the health is just the tail length. Each time you hit the wall a certain amount of points are removed from the front of the snake. If the snake is shorter than that number of points then it's game over. You are right the number of points that get removed isn't the same as the number that get added with pickups, so it's not 1-1. I might experiment with making them the same, that's a good idea. Thank you!

An interesting take on the simple snake game it was a bit tough for me, I think lowering the speed of the snake would be better probably increasing it slowly but overall I liked it good job :D

Submitted(+1)

Very fast-paced game, requires a lot of focus :D I didn't manage to progress past the first level. Two buttons control would make it more enjoyable for me. Nevertheless, it is a great game, good job :)

This game is great but a bit too difficult for me. I think the main problem is that the acceleration is not weighted equally in both directions. I think I had to hold down the button for a while to try to get it to wiggle in a straight line, but as soon as I let go it immediately started rotating right again. I guess I was expecting that it would accelerate toward the loop gradually rather than just going there right away.

But that being said this is one of those games that makes me want to come back and practice!

Really nice style and difficult! maybe a bit too much so, found it hard to control and get the hang of initially, and even still after that every now and again.  The use of the theme was super cool and creative, and the visuals are really nice. Music is super neat too.  Really liked it.

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much :) Yes I definitely need to tone down the difficulty a bit. I was kind of going for the one-button flappy bird style game, but definitely needs some tweaking.
