Great job finishing a fun experience from start to finish. It wasn't very challenging, but it was very atmospheric. Just enjoyed listening to the old man rambling about the old days :P. Half expected the next day I'd be on the sea alone, with grandpa fallen ill or something. Could be a fun progression :). Really nice sound design too!

Developer

I'm so happy you enjoyed the game :) Christian Minges did a wonderful job bringing the grandpa character to life with his voice. Thanks so much for playing the game.

This was a fun experience. It’s very creative to pick up a very simple mechanic - go front, left, right and back - and bring some magic to it through great voice acting, building a story, and the immersion of the sound design. It’s a complete experience that doesn’t require to do that much (well, I say this but I’m not a programmer!) - but you know what I mean.

I could use some more fine tuning for the sound EQ, as I felt the grandpa’s voice was a bit too quiet at the start. His second voice was a bit better, I think. Which also brings me to the funny bit that grandpa changed his voice / accent, midway through the voyage. I gotta say this broke my immersion for a bit, as it felt like a different personality and person. It also put me a little off that the grandpa always called us “kiddo” and sometimes used that vocative every sentence. I think if this was less overused, it would have had a better effect. It made me think about how maybe the creators just didn’t want to give us a name to make us self-insert better. But had he used this word less, I might not have started reflecting as much about it.

But I really enjoyed the sounds of running around the boat, like a kid would! Energetic jogging in a wooden floor of a boat; and the creaky wood, and the sea noises.

And I also loved how the tutorial was so immersive. I love when that happens. Granted, not all tutorials can be so immersive, but it’s a great thing when they are. You get thrown inside the story when you’re learning what to do.

I think this could still use a bit more polish, but nevertheless it is quite polished already and a great experiment. I’m not sure how I could see this growing into other games or a bigger game, but I nevertheless would kinda like to, because the setting was really nice. Good job, kiddos. Hehe.

Developer(+1)

I'm glad you enjoyed parts of the game experience :) As for the voice acting, i had instructed the voice actor Christian Minges, to use gender neutral wording, so the player could be more immersed as the grandchild of the story. And I'm really happy that you found the audio tutorial immersive. And while the gameplay was rather simplistic, I have been happy to read all the lovely comments about people enjoying the immersive experience of the game. Thank you so much for the extensive feedback 🌟

I have to say, this was a really fun game. It was realy well polished and had some really great voice acting and sound design. When i first clicked on run game, i was confused why i couldn't play since i got taken to a new website and i actually thought i was on the wrong place. I could hear the music in the background, but couldn't navigate the menu. So it took me a bit to figure out how to get that to work properly. But once i got through i played the game twice and i relaly loved it. Great submission.

Developer

I'm so happy you enjoyed the game and even replayed it :)

This is such a lovely game! The voice acting, the writing, and the gameplay are so well polished. As someone who spent a lot of time with their grandfather fishing this really made me think about my Poppy D.

Developer

I'm so glad you enjoyed the game so much and that it brought up nice memories :) The voice actor Christian Minges did a amazing job making the grandpa come to life in the audio of the game.

Nice game! I feel it like, going fishing with grandpa but with a little bit of gun powder. I enjoy the story, the voice, the sound effects, I found no bug at all and I could finish it without problem. My favourite thing: the menu

Developer

I'm so glad you enjoyed the game :) Christian Minges did a wonderful job voicing the grandpa for this game. And I'm happy you enjoyed the menu voiced by me.

Congrats on the great submission here 👏

I really enjoyed this one. I'm not usually a fan of pure story games, but the little interactions and audio made it fun and interactive way to really be in the scene. As others have already brought up, the voice acting and the sounds, were all great here, and made it clear what I was doing and what was happening at all times.

As others had mentioned, there is probably some timing that could be tightened up (making the noise and the callout happen more syncronously), but other than that, I thought this was great!

Developer

I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed the game and story :)

I generally like the style and it's all quite cleanly made. I'd like to be able to get it wrong. Right now if I go to the wrong side and try to shoot, nothing happens. Also, no matter where I go, if I just wait without shooting, nothing happens until I do.

Let me run wherever, shoot at will, miss the shots, make a mess of it.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Ya, the game is rather limited in its game actions. While it is possible that more freedom could be added. This project in particular, was only made in 2 weeks, so its rather limited in scope. Although, I am glad you liked the style of the game :)

Submitted(+1)

I played it completely without encountering any bugs. Very nice work, especially if you're still new to coding! I'll agree with some of the other feedback: if you let me run to the right and shoot the musket as quickly as I wanted to, and especially if you let me shoot it as many times as I wanted to, I think it would be even more fun! I also found it a little unintuitive that if I press down multiple times, I still hear a sound effect for movement even though I'm not actually moving. That seems like it might be an easy fix.

I love the concept of bonding with your grandfather on a fishing trip and encountering something particularly dangerous and out of the ordinary to add some drama. If you want to keep developing this further, I think there's a lot of room for being able to choose dialogue options and have the bonding experience be more of a back-and-forth conversation to share memories with your grandfather. Just a thought!

Developer

I'm glad you enjoyed the game concept :) The game pacing could use some tweaking, but for a game made in 2 weeks, it seems to have turned out decently, especially with my level of coding skills lol. And the voice actor Christian Minges did a great job making the grandpa connect with the audience. But overall I'm just really happy to hear about so many people enjoying the game, its very heartwarming experience for me.

Oh, certainly! My feedback was meant as "in case you wanted to continue working on it, here are some areas worth exploring." Nothing wrong with putting a bow on it and moving on to the next game!

We loved the creativity!

Glad you enjoyed it :)

I loved the grandpa and his voice acting, for the most part the voice was pretty solid! I also loved his dialogue and the way he talked about the village. It was kind of surprising honestly. I was expecting a fast paced chaotic game where you hunt sea monsters as an old man, so it was very interesting to see that it was more of a casual conversation. Basically having a fishing trip with your grandpa except your hunting sea monsters. I do agree that the game play feels a bit slower than it should be though. The fact that you hear the monster and you have to wait until the entire sound plays to actually fire is a little frustrating. I honestly think I'd prefer it if you could fire each weapon at a whim.

Personally I think it'd be really funny if the monsters picked up in numbers really quickly, so you have to run all over shooting monsters, and the grandpa is just kinda rambling about his story as he is already used to this kinda thing. I understand completely though if that isn't the vibe. All in all this entry brought a big smile to my face.

Developer (1 edit)

I'm glad you enjoyed the game and it made you smile :) The story is definitely set at a slower pace. The overall feeling i was going for, was a grandpa helping the next generation to survive the wilds of there world that has monsters, but still enjoying time with his grandchild while he is living out his later years of life. And Christian Minges did a spectacular job bringing the grandpa character to life.

Jam HostSubmitted(+1)

Nice submission! The sound design and voice acting really sold the experience for me, and I enjoyed the easter eggs in the menu narrations.

The gameplay was a little slow in the sense that I would instinctively react to the sounds right away, but my actions were hindered by needing to wait for dialog lines to complete. Even if the slow and contemplative nature of the experience is the point, I bet there is a balance that can be found, to tighten this up without it turning into a pure action/horror game. For example, maybe travel between spots takes some time for your character to get there, or the sounds are more subtle or out in the distance at first so you’re not hearing it before grandpa does.

Developer (1 edit)

I'm really glad you enjoyed the game :) The story is slower, but that's mostly because of my coding skills 😭, so there are things that definitely could be adjusted in the game. And Christian Minges did an excellent job voice acting for this game.

Jam HostSubmitted(+1)

I agree! Nice work, Christian!

And your skills are totally fine. Ten games from now, you’ll look back at this and see just how far you’ve come. Take your passion and what you’ve learned from this to the next project, and you’ll get where you want to be eventually.

The voice acting and overall ambiance were a real treat. The stereo panning was also great. Is it actually in surround?

Developer(+1)

I'm happy you enjoyed the game :) The audio is is positional. So each side of the boat generates that directions sounds, so you have 4 directions where sound comes from. And Christian Minges did the wonderful voice acting for this game.

Submitted(+1)

This made me smile, I really liked hearing the grandpa's stories in between the little bits of interaction. Your old man voice was fun to listen to, all in all I think you did a good job :)

Developer

I'm so glad you enjoyed the game :) The voice of the grandpa was voiced by an actual voice actor Christian Minges. I just did the menu voice and the coding.

Submitted(+1)

The game worked for me. The story and the inmersive ambient makes the game all an experience. I played it twice to hear more of the story. At this point, the game is brillant. Congratulations.

The mechanics are simple and funny to play. They are well built, except for the great great problem of this game (in ours there are still one bug of this kind): Repetition. When the game detects a key pressed is necessary to make this button ineffective for the same action until de block of events ends. If not, the game is difficult to play until you realize that you only need to press SPACE button once when needed. Same in menu (when an new option is selected, the game needs to stop the last voice option).

Apart of this problem the audio and voice acting of this game is superbe and very well done. With the story, is the best part by far. Congratulations.

Developer(+2)

I'm so happy you enjoyed the game. I did not expect people to spam the space bar button (my fault), so I'm trying to make a patch for that issue right now. And thank you again for the wonderful feedback. :)

Developer

I took your feedback and used it to update the game. Hopefully it will make it better for everyone to play. :)

I am really enjoying this so far, however, I can't progress past the third shot. I've tried launching the game twice, am able to shoot the first two which goes into the first story, can hit the next one but then it tells me something else and no mattre what I do, my spacebar doesn't work. Sadly, due to this, I feel I can't leave a rating at this time. There is also another bug where the menu keeps on overlapping with itself with no interupt.

Developer

Sorry the game bugged out. I'll look into it to see if i can fix that.

Developer

Ok, so i pushed out an update for the game. Let me know if that fixed the issue for you.

Audio keeps playing ontop of itself, if you go down in the main menu to start the game it just becomes a cacophany of voices. In the game when I hear a sound in one direction I go there and spam space because nothing happens first time  I press it (i might be too fast), and then it plays that sound over and over and same with the splash, and granpas voice starts a few times. Then it just plays a few sounds like right, then coming back to him, in quick succession. It's a fun idea though!

Developer

Sorry that the game was bugging out. I'll try to see what i can do to fix it.

Developer

Part of the issue may be the button spam. Does pressing the space bar just once solve the issue? Because each audio trigger has a timer before it sets off the next one. So it may be bugging out from be pressed more than once in quick succession.

Developer

I put out an update, so hopefully most of the issues were fixed. Let me know if anything else bugs out in the game.

Ah yeah, that works a lot better now, thank you!

Submitted(+1)

Hey, this game sounds really cool! I love it. I hope you continue it in the future. I really love that you can make an html canvas accessible. I'm blind and teaching myself to code my own  games, so now I learned something new.

Developer

I'm so happy you enjoyed the game! Although the game is kinda short, i hope the random encounter system provides some variety of an experience for you.

Submitted

Hi, the encounters aren't challenging, I could shoot each one of them down quite easily. Are they supposed to get faster or more difficult?

Developer(+1)

It's more of a story game, not meant to be challenging. Its mostly just a variety system to give some difference, not any real change in difficulty.

Submitted

Ah ok, then this makes sense. I like the story so far and the voices have good stereo left/right separation.

Developer(+1)

I'm glad you enjoyed the story voiced by Mr Minges. He did a wonderful job. And I tried my best to make sure the audio was consistently directional.

Submitted

You did a good job.
