How does the game fit the theme?
Hellbakers is a luck based roguelike. You have to play a slot machine to determine if you're going to get monsters that will help you or help the enemy team in combat. The more you play the slot machine, the higher the chance you will spawn more enemy monsters. Balanced risk can win you the game, while mindless pulling and not pulling enough will kill you.

What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
Footstep sound by ZNukem
Hitmark sound by Anthousai
Alagard font by Hewett Tsoi

How many people worked on the game?

I may have got a little pull happy with the slot machine. ^^"
I do wish the first level would happen before being presented the shop menu, cause I was very confused when I was presented an upgrade shop but unable to do anything with it. Overall a really interesting auto battler where you want just barely pass each level!

Cool idea. I think it has potential to be a great game but there a couple things  I wish was implemented. One of which is the idea of putting all your cards down before starting the battle. I think that it's a bit extra, and kind of confused me at first. Also, i do think maybe there could be less of a scramble of a text at the beginning? I like to read but it seemed a bit confused at first. (just a bit nitpicky here thats all) Great job though.

I'm definitely the target of this kind of games and I really enjoyed the experience.
The strengths are that is easy to learn and have an addictive game loop but I have to say something about the design.

I think that the risky slot machine mechanic of pulling out an enemy is not so relevant except for the very beginning. In my experience the most difficult round was the first one (which is not how it should work).
From what I've seen in advanced rounds, if you keep 2/3 monsters you can basically roll each round until you fill your hand (sometimes without even pulling an enemy!). That makes me feel no risk at all.

After the slot machine part the game is basically all about positioning (which is cool) but I think it needs more layout in order to be fresh and challenging most of the times.

Sorry if I'm making suggestions, but as I said, it's my genre.
I hope you find them useful:
- It needs more pure numbers balancing in terms of game economy and pulls chance. Speaking about that could be interesting let the players know how much currency  they will get and the chance of pulling an enemy in order to allow a bit more of strategy.
-  It would be wonderful to have monster synergies (like ranged ones buff eachother or something like that)
- Try to check The Good Overlord on steam. There is a demo and could be a nice reference.

Anyway well done folks, all my feedback are obviously in the perspective of future updates, for being a game jam project is really impressive! Big up

Developer

Hey thanks for the review. We just founded the biggest fan of the genre! ๐Ÿ˜‚ I'm glad you liked it. Oh yeah the game needs some balancing with the Slot Machine or Card system. I liked the idea of letting the player know how much chance of getting a bad card they have. Thanks for playing men. I will try to play yours in return! (Though I'm busy because of Silksong ๐Ÿ’€)

Played it for about 30 minutes.  Had fun while doing so. Gameplay is good.  Music gets repetitive, but isn't painful.  Missile troops all had the same issue where they would try to shoot through walls instead of going around them.  There was one board where I drew three enemies before I drew a friendly card, but still ended up winning somehow.  Exploder guy is probably one of the strongest if played correctly.  The only thing I would want is to have the actual stats on the card instead of just the base stats with the mouseover bonus.  It looks like you plan to expand it with more cards (unless I didn't play it long enough to unlock them), so that's good.  Solid entry!

Developer

Thanks men! I'm glad you liked it. If the game gets a lot of support we could expand it. Oh yeah the Exploder is the strongest I agree ๐Ÿ’€. And you didn't see him before the Nerf, he was obliterating everything. If we continue developing it we will surely fix the problems you mentioned. Cheers!

Cool concept but it feels to RNG based imo

Developer

Thank you for the review.

This is a really cool concept! I really enjoyed the element of randomization with the slot machine, but also strategizing with whatever cards are dealt. I ended up pulling 4 stronger enemy cards on a level and I knew I was dead haha :)

Quick feedback:

  • Tutorial seemed a little text heavy, and a little confusing to follow. Maybe a step-by-step guide would be helpful here.
  • I didn't quite feel the 'risk' element in the game because it was geared more RNG. I understand you earn biscuits after each cleared stage, but it seems more like a currency because you use those to purchase upgrades.
  • Speaking of currency, I would like to see how to player can gain more Soul Dough for each level!

Overall, amazing work to the team! You guys pulled off a really cool game in one week! I'm looking forward to any updates you guys may have afterwards. Great work!

Developer

Thanks a lot for the review and the feedback :)
I will look into making a step by step tutorial for the 1.1 version of the game.
The soul dough is not gained, at each level you receive a fixed amount of it. You can't gain any more.

Nice game! Maybe it's just me, but it felt a little easy. At least in the beginning levels. It also felt more RNG than risk-related. I know that the slot machine is a big part of the game, but it's a good thing to consider. Otherwise, this game is promising!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the review! A balance update to make the game a bit more difficult in terms of level design and fund generation is already completed :). However since the update window is already over it will be posted after the Jam ends.

Pretty fun little game! UI felt a little unresponsive if you try to click multiple cards back to back but besides that I enjoyed playing the game, good work :)

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! Will try to make the UI feel more responsive.

Cool ideas and the theme is also very unique! The card draw machine is my favorite and the animations are on point!

Quick suggestion:

  • At first it felt a bit overwhelming seeing so many text as tutorial..showing them step by step would be much better!

Congrats!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the review men! Im glad you liked our game and the animations, that Slot machine is my best Pixel Art yet. If we keep developing the game after the Jam we'll surely keep that in mind

Submitted

Neat idea, cool animations and overall good game.

The animation is great, the concept really fits the theme, the game feels polished, and the tutorial is easy to understand. Great work man

Very cool concept! UI is very polished and cool looking. The only downside for me was not having fullscreen option.

Congrats with a great game!

Developer

Thank you for the feedback. Will look into adding a fullscreen option and implementing proper scaling.

Great game!
From art over music to animation. Everything fits well together and feels nice.
I have no idea what a great deckbuilder / autobattler should look like (never played one before).
But this one felt great. Maybe I will look more into this genre now, seems fun. Thanks for the introduction.

Amazing work.

Developer

Thank you a lot men. It's the first game I see and make of the genre as well ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚. It is fun enough to try more for sure! Thanks for the review ๐Ÿค—

Tried playing your game, and unfortunately I just can't do it. The game opens on a quarter of the screen dedicated for the game and everything is super small. I just cant read any text without causing pain in my eyes.

Figured out that part of the issue that I have an OS scaling, when disabling it, the game fits the dedicated zone, but everything is still to small, browser scaling does not helps as the game does not scale properly.

OS : Windows 11

Resolution: 2560 x 1600

Scaling: 150%

Hope this feedback will help you configuring the build properly!

OMG NEVER SAW THAT BEFORE ๐Ÿ’€ I will tell my team thanks for warning!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thank you for the bug report. I've already pushed an update, however submissions can't be edited at this point in the game jam, so that sucks. Sorry.

Very cute and fun combat game. Really like the artstyle and the music. Good job!

Hey, I would really love it if you wanted to give my game a try and some feedback!

Developer

Of course I will pal! Tomorrow I will come ACTIVE to try out a horde of games! Thanks you very much for playing and enjoy the game!

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

Very cool game! polished and with a lot of depth. Loved the graphics! It took me a second to understand what I had to do, I would suggest reducing the amount of text the tutorial has. Other than that I enjoyed it and would love to see it polished further. Well done!

Developer(+1)

Thanks you for the feedback!!! I will definitely write that down :D Glad you liked the game and the art โค๏ธ!

I rarely play auto-battlers, but this game got me hooked. Top-tier arts. The monster types are pretty balanced. A very polished project for one week. Spotless teamwork. Congrats!

Developer

Thank you pal! All our team is proud of our work here! Also I love your game hope you get a lot of votes ๐Ÿ˜

Submitted(+2)

The art was amazing, I loved the slot machine (but also the enemies! and the cards! really all of it was so polished). Also thought this had such a unique concept, I couldn't think of any existing game like it. Would love to see if you develop this further :)

Developer(+1)

THANK YOU VERY MUCH MATE ๐Ÿ˜ญ. We worked so hard for this one. Also thank you it took a LOT to do that Slot Machine thank you for pointing it ๐Ÿ˜‚. I would be definitely willing to keep developing the game if it gets a lot of support here!
