Great mechanics and polish, SFX and music fit well with the graphic style and feel of the game. Quite difficult. Good job!

Wow, just wow. This game is "my" type. Of all the game this is the only game, which I played because I enjoyed. Again, amazing !!!

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much! That really means a lot to us!

I like how this capture the feeling of some old games, in a way that most developers seem to avoid because it could become frustrating for most players, but it could also be really fun for the more persistent ones. Good job!

Developer

Yeah that is tottally what we tried to achieve! Thank you!

I managed to beat it! The art is great, and I really like the color scheme. The control scheme with the arrow keys while using S to throw was a little unusual for me and sometimes I would block an enemy attack and think I could keep moving, only to find that the enemy explosion hitbox was still going. I think you showed some interesting ideas, though, and I really like the mechanic of throwing the shield and returning. Needing to not have the shield to jump higher was also really smart and led to some very risky situations.

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much! Only a few have actually beat the game! The controls are definitely something we would improve if we had invested more time on playstesting...

Really nice visuals, feels very polished

hitboxes are a bit too big on the enemies, they kept hittting me from what felt like acrosss the screen. (it wasn’t actually) would be nice if you could defeat enemies by throwing your shield at them to reward the fast style of gameplay more.

Developer(+1)

Yeah you can defeat the enemies by throwing the shield, that’s the point of the game xD

Submitted

oh, well it wasn’t cleaar in the tutorial so i never tried it

Submitted(+1)

Nice game with great visuals! Only thing is I would've liked to play with A/D instead of the arrow keys, but that's just personal preference I guess :)

Submitted(+1)

Cool game! I really like his visuals and music, I think they work together very well! The game mechanics are also very creative!

But why was I killed by the smoke after the explosion? This makes my death meaningless!

Another thing that often causes my death is that flying robot. He came out too quickly, and I didn't have time to summon my shield back. I tried to move, but in the end, I could only watch myself die

Developer(+1)

Haha yes you have to be careful. The idea is that you should throw the shield and recall it, instead of walking without it. The game becomes pretty easy after you learn the right timings.

Submitted(+3)

Pretty well made with a fun and unique central mechanic, block to stay safe or throw to kill enemies but be vulnerable until the shield is recalled. Definitely fits the theme. The visual style is nice, and the music works well. The tutorial being baked into the game and taught piecemeal as needed is always a plus. There’s a decent amount of enemy variety to keep you on your toes, too.

You still die if you unblock a bit after explosions, which was annoying. The start was also pretty hard, but I am generally bad at platformers, so maybe it’s a skill issue.

Overall an impressive entry, especially with everything made from scratch.

Developer

Thank you very much! Yeah the explosion thing was something we decided to keep this way because it didn't look right to just go into the explosion, but maybe we should have change the animation instead of the making it kill you...

This one was kind of a mixed bag. I usually enjoy platformers, even rage games, but idk, something about this one felt a little off. Maybe it was the animations making blocking and throwing feel sluggish, or the fact that you can’t change direction while blocking, or maybe that I didn’t realize that you could recall the shield until 15 minutes into my playthrough (skill issue). The lingering explosion hurt boxes messed me up a bit but I got used to it over time. I mean the art and soundtrack are really nice, like maybe in the top 20% of what I’ve played so far of this jam, but I kind of stopped having fun after the twenty minute mark. Still beat it though. Always give a game a fair chance till the end.

Thank you very much for finishing the game!

There are definitely some aspects that could be improved if we spent more time playtesting before releasing it. There's nothing we can do now 😭

Submitted(+2)

Good graphics, loving the color palette, good music, good level design. Amazing work.

awesome game

It is a very polished platformer. Though i think it would be better if the beginning was a bit more forgiving and ramped up difficulty bit slower.  The shielding felt at times inconsistent and i felt i died cheaply many times. The shield throw being on delay made it annoying to use consistently, i felt like i was fighting the controls instead of the enemies. I'm sure if i played it more i could get better and master it, but i guess I'm not the target audience for this type of game. Still very competently made game.

Developer

Thank you for the feedback. We totally understand what you mean, the controls may look hard at first but it's just a matter of getting used to it. The game was way to easy initially without the "hold to throw", so we decided to add it to make it more challenging. Turns out many people seem to be annoyed by it 😂

Submitted(+1)

This is the best-feeling 2D platformer I’ve ever played—the controls are top-notch, and the design is really clever. The difficulty is a bit high, and it definitely gives off a Souls-like vibe

Developer

Hahaha maybe it was the only platform you've ever played. But thank you so much for the compliment!

Submitted(+1)

I was attracted by this game visuals (I love the color palette) so I play and rate it!

OMG I didn't expect the game to be so difficult! I have seen that you want to keep the difficulty high so I will not give feedbacks in that direction, but there are some things that could have been improved.

For example the flying enemy explosion seems only an animation and not something that could kill you. If the difficulty is high these types of visual feedbacks must be clean to the player or they will be perceived as unfair.

Except for that very nice game and the risky shield mechanic is super smart, good job!

If you try mine, let me know what you think!

Developer

Thank you so much! The game sure is a challenge xD
I totally agree with you that the damage with the explosion could somehow be improved.

Submitted(+1)

Argh, throwing the shield makes you lighter / jump higher is brilliant.

Was it an intentional choice to not use WASD for movement? I feel like fighting my muscle memory was 50% of the game difficulty :-).

Excellent work. Congratulations.

Developer

Thank you for playing!
Yeah, we just thought it would be better to use arrow keys since we are people that like retro games and are kinda used to use the arrow keys xD
But at this point we would totally change to WASD if we could.

Submitted

I like that you didn't use WASD. Definitely helped to deliver retro vibes.

It is indeed a speedrunner game if it's get tweaked more. The art is nice and simple good style, it fits with the music and sounds. The homing missiles are very hard to conquer.

The most issue I had was what you told on the page the waiting for the smoke to clear, cause indeed it's bit annoying that I get defeated because of that. If that was fixed, speedrunning would be more possible.

Overall the game is nice and felt fun to play for a bit, I hope I got far I got passed where carrots came down but idk if it where carrots haha (probably not) I was at the stairs with the 3 homing missiles.

Developer

Thank you very much for playing!
Yeah I understand your point. Definitely something we need to improve in the future.
They are not carrots haha they are torpedos! The stairs with 3 turrets is pretty much about 70% of completion.

Nice one. I liked the art , but the player has only one life which makes it harder

Heya, I leave detailed feedback on every game I play so hope this isn't daunting. Just leaving my thoughts as I played:

  • I love the mechanics!
  • I notice that when holding down block to kill the exploding bat, even once you've killed the bat, you can still die if you don't block for a few more seconds after it dies. I think you should not die once the bat dies, as it makes it feel like an unfair death, and especially the first time I was confused as to how I died this way.
  • I think the game could really use some sort of lives system, as it is very unforgiving, or at least the option for players who aren't into this genre some leeway to at least progress.
  • I think holding S to throw takes a little too long, and maybe it's a personal taste but I would have expected the throw to happen when I pressed the button, rather than a keydown action, so that the game flows more fluidly and also get immediate feedback on my actions rather than being unsure whether I threw or not, especially when there are sequenecs where it gets fast paced!

However, I must say this game got me playing a little more than I expected as it makes you want to go a little further each time to try and master the game. I also enjoyed being a little 'Captain America', which was fun.

Overall, the audio and color palette were well chosen! It made the game definitely a visual standout amongst the game I've played, so good job on that!

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much for your feedback!

  • Yeah the explosion thing, you die because it didn't make sense to walk into the explosion so we decided to make it this way. I understand that it annoys most people but it was an intentional decision.
  • The game is very hard and probably 2% of the players have finished it 😅
  • I get you on the shield, but it was way too easy if you didn't have to hold it. We could probably adjust the timing with the jump better, but I totally understand your point.
Submitted

No problem! I think it being hard definitely has its appeal so I would also agree on your points!

Something good happened in real life, so I managed to play without getting angry at the last minute (it's a really great game).
