Description
The Frozen Waste is a place where time stands still. In its silence, every moment feels endless, as if the world itself has forgotten to move forward. Loneliness hangs heavy in the air, stretching across the frozen horizon, where echoes fade before they can find a listener. Yet within this stillness, something stirs—a fleeting motion rising like a distant breath, a small climax breaking the silence before fading again. In the end, all returns to calm, as if nothing had ever disturbed fragments of time.
These are just here for the vibe. They've been taken on last years trip to the Lofoten (Norway), so they are technically above the arctic circle. Since I didn't have my camera back then, the photos have been taken with my cell phone, so that's the reason for the mediocre picture quality.
Description of Setup (Optional but recommended)
Plugins Used:
Strings: Cinematic Studio Strings
Piano: Two free libraries from Pianobook
Soft Piano: Custom Piano build in Pianoteq 8 based on a Yamaha U4 upright
Synths [FoxHyode]: All synths were hand-crafted in Phase Plant, either from pure synthesis or custom sampling. A large part of the sound design involves granular processing, particularly using the reverb tail of a single piano note to build the mid-section pads. These are blended with acoustic instruments to create a “brightness” layer, most noticeable during the build-up to the first climax. Many reverse effects were also implemented, including heavily processed piano transformed into a shimmering analog-style lead.
synths [Einel]: In addition to the outboard gear I also used 2 software synths. 1) a simulation of a Roland Mercury 6 by CherryAudio for some high pitched arpegios and 2) a simulation of an Yamaha DX7 by Arturia for some nice single lines in the background. Both are based on presets but edited to taste.
Twisted Electrons MEGAfm: A little hardware synth based on an FM-chip used in the SEGA MegaDrive. The patches used are custom created and used for some Rhodes like sounds, leads, and plucks. After recording the sounds are further enhanced in DAW.
Korg MS20. Legendary simple mono synth. Used for some wind noises and a custom breathy soft synth.
Bass: Entirely designed in Phase Plant, no samples used.
Percussion: I prefer to separate each individual sound for maximum control, so the percussion section alone spans 12 dedicated tracks, allowing detailed automation, panning, and FX work., I used XO by XLN Audio.
Bass Clarinet: A custom synth built in Phase Plant using a sample of Einel’s Bass Clarinet, designed to add warmth and an airy texture, occasionally doubling the main bass line for depth.
Fender Telecaste: Used together with a lightly pushed Fender Twin
Wind noises [Einel]: Doubling the synth wind patch I’ve created some wind noises with my mouth, covering it with my hands and closing and opening it to act as an additional filter.
Lessons Learned
It is always a big challenge doing collaboration but we learn to make compromise and learn from each other, we also make some happy accidents that ends up being that main part of the track.

I think I'm going to keep listening tho this track even after the jam. Loved everything in it, the instrument choices, the mixing, the skyrim-like intro. I also appreciate how you guys made a balance between the rhythm and the sense of ambience, sounds dynamic but not too upbeat. The drums are especially well mixed.
I absolutely want to hear more from you two. Definitly the most game-ready piece of all (I know the jam isn't focused around video game music, but it made me think of one), and definitely one of my top 3 favs !
Beyond cool sound design and song! Very good. Loved every part of it. Really love that breakdown of what you used as well! Really solid work here. I loved the piano and the synths, they were awesome and really created the right mood. Great work here!
Exceptionally produced, great job!
I love the intro, and think it was a very creative aproach to the theme, the drums took me off the "vibe" at first , but it just grooved :)
Great submission! Take care
Now this was a treat to listen to - it seems you both made a great contribution to this track stylistically that made for a unique blend of sounds and a lovely piece of music.
Also, since I haven't seen anyone mention it yet, the submission artwork has gotten quite a bit better since I've been here so kudos there as well.
Keep up the good work you guys :)
Great work! I really enjoyed the atmosfere, the sound palette and how the piece evolves. Great su Mission!
Alright what did 2/3rds of our foxes brew up?
I love the composition. It's sweet, hits the heart. You two work well together.
Constructive:
Intro strings I want to sound just a bit less harsh. I want the cello plucks to be a bit louder too.
I want a bit more wetness on the reverb, as well as maybe space. A lot of people go too dry because they're not in control of the reverb.
The two things I learned this jam that really improved things was to have two reverbs, each on their own bus, so they're running independently, receiving the same signal. I also just recorded in stereo instead of screwing around with VR or emulating it for the proportion of sounds that were real instruments.
Heh, Foxyhode, you said this was the best mixed track I've done yet - it was an accident, and what I just described was the accident! Lol.
Really solid work overall.
Oi Alex!
Thank you so much for those kind words and the constructive criticism. I think the mixing should have got most definitely more time, but we only got the song finalized like Friday evening in my time. So for mixing we both only had two days and coordinating each other’s stems. I agree with your statements and maybe after that jam we can take some further time to improve on the mix a bit more.
But also reading your comment… PLEASE don’t tease me man :D. I haven’t come around to your submission yet, but you are on my watch list. So we see us on the other side 😎
Nuuh uuuuh, I also learned about reverb from my mistakes, putting too much is also an issue, mix is fine (I also got Ty's approval after the jam ended XD). But I do agree with the intro bass string spicatto, I actually tried to make them sound more in your face but did not succeed, I might need to try and add a second bank more dry on top of it or maybe just change to pizzicatto.
I like the chillness and the addition of Einel's photography! The track has a nice meditative vibe. This collab also makes me want to do a collab with someone, it seems fun! Great work, Fox².
my favourite part about this piece is actually that it feels like two separate identities came together. It actually feels collaborative, which I'm really liking. I think with the overall theme and atmosphere of the track it's like a developing relationship within the song itself, just thought that was a very cool subtextual layer that came poking through for me! Otherwise, really just a wonderful listen, feels very cinematic. I think maybe compositionally there is a lot going on sometimes but that also helps the music evolve and also feed into the collaborative element I mentioned, so not necessarily a critique. Great track from the Foxes!
Reading your comment, you couldn’t have hit the nail better on its head :D. This is quite literally a song with two identities and I remember very fondly how I more than once had tried to put ideas in there that didn’t really fit with the greater vision of this song. Be it either having some sung vocal or even having some dark brakes or more distorted guitars. But I’m also glad Fox stud his ground in making it to what it is now. The original Idea was to set a song and work from each other’s input or even add to the section of the other. So that might even explain that multi-layer part a bit. But I’m really glad you liked it.
Really nice atmosphere, probably one of the better mixed submissions here if not the best. This whole track makes me want to give Phase Plant another chance, I wasn't a massive fan of it before.
It's always nice to see collaborations in these jams, it's cool seeing what two good minds can put out and create.
Production is as polished as it can be, as usual 😁
Really love the whole vibe and everything, cant really say more 😅
Good work from both of you!
This is very inspiring, especially the percussion sounds. I really love how different parts of the percussion section are panned differently—it creates such a nice atmosphere :)
Excellent track, very well produced.
Beautiful atmosphere!
Also, love the attention to detail, so many things forming into a great piece like a puzzle!
