Really cool idea! Makes for an interesting puzzle game; I could definitely see this idea being fleshed out further with more mechanics (maybe multiple enemies at once, stance switching, or moving around the battlefield, to give some ideas). One thing that would have been nice as well was the actual numerical HP values of the characters, so that I could try to calculate the outcome based on the current actions loops. But other than that this is really good stuff!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the kind words! Numerical HP values was on our list of additions, but sadly enough we didn't have enough time.

Loved the auto-battler vibe here — the looping gladiator actions make each round feel tense and strategic. Watching synergies kick in over time was super satisfying :)

If you get a chance, please check out our game too!

It embodies the theme really well, and it's overall quite fun, even though the game design might need some tweaking to make the game really shine. But it's very polished, the art is great,  and it's a solid game jam entry overall. Well done!
The music, although professionally produced, clashes a bit with the cartoonish style, and it's overall quite tiring for the ears after a while. Probably a tailored sound design is what the game would need to make the gameplay even more satisfying (I don't even think a continuous music loop is what the game needs to be honest).
Oh, and maybe some narrative between one match and the other would have been amazing!

Developer

Thank you for the elaborate review! Fully agree with your feedback. If we'd continue development on this, we'd definitely take sound and narrative more into consideration to be make it feel more cohesive and complete.

Probably my most favourite game so far, I had so much fun playing it! I actually got soft locked in a fight though (I'll share the screenshot. My armour was growing too fast and I couldn't out hit his heal lol) so maybe a way to forfeit the fight would be handy, as I had to restart. Thankfully you were smart and allowed for the speed to be adjusted lol (as i was happy to play again tbh and try a different build).

The art is amazing also, honestly all 5s for this game :D

Developer

Thanks for the nice comment!

The stalemates that can occur with defensive/healing builds are indeed frustrating, sorry that you had to abandon your run. A way to forfeit would be good, although then the player still gets punished in a way. I think the match resulting in a draw after 10 loops could work well perhaps?

Very depended on luck but also fun with great music

slay the sandals? swords and spires? either way it’s great! i could see burning through a few rounds of this pretty easily.

This is a game I could see myself playing on the train! Although at one point I was stuck in an endless loop of attacks hahaha

Loved it! Very well done. Loved the art and felt polished.

Love the death still of the opponents hahah

Really great execution. It's fun to play and I think the player feedback elements are well done. I wasn't confused about what was happening at any point.

Developer

That's really nice to hear, as it we were a bit afraid that new players could get overwhelmed. Thanks!

I love war games. This game is really great. It deserves 5 stars from all of them.

Developer

Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

Good basic strategy, I can see the expansion with longer loops and more powers...I played 3 rounds to try different strategies, and couldn't find a good one that was all over superior, pros and cons.  Nice game!

Developer

Did you manage to beat the game? Please to share your winning combo's with us :)

Love this game so much! It's a really great idea and the game loop is fun, congratulation!

Ah I really enjoyed this! The chunky character illustrations are really appealing and their animations makes it really easy to follow what's going on. Super easy to pickup but a lot of depth once you get into it! Our games look nothing alike but I think they're actually pretty similar under the hood lol. Great entry, thank you for making it!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! We really went for the Flash game aesthetic, haha.
I'll make sure to check out KOROMEKE, it looks very pretty!

I love the gameplay loop of this game! I really would like to see a longer version of it.

Developer

Thanks a lot! We currently don't have plans to, but the game has a lot of expansion potential.  Who knows, maybe we'll resume work on it in the future :)

Thanks for the nice comment!

During development we were telling each other that it felt a bit like a Flash game, and now I know why! I had mostly forgotten about Swords and Sandals, but now remember playing it in elementary school.

I could see this as a bigger game for sure!
