A fun little platformer! Sorry I didn’t get to rate it during the jam, but it looked too good to pass up, so I had to give it a shot. The animations are fantastic, and I loved the ability upgrades you get as you progress, the Nyan Cat hover ability was definitely my favorite! The sci-fi setting was really cool, too.

Most of the issues I had have already been mentioned by others, so all I can say is: great job! With a bit more polish and some tweaks, this could easily turn into something amazing.

Developer

Aw you just missed my v1.0.1 update (don't worry both versions exist for download). I re-enabled i-frames and the boss's explosion after accidently disabling also fixed a collision issue I made... and recentered the camera.

Submitted(+1)

Really great game for the jam. I will say a couple of things for feedback -

The attack itself felt a bit clunky with having to be both stationary and very close to the enemy to use it

It felt a bit bad getting hit multiple times without getting any invincibility

I know I saw this in someone else's comment, but coyote time would be good at helping the platforming feel a bit better

Also potentially the camera being a bit lower, it felt like I couldn't really see what was below me until it was too late

With all that said, the art was amazing, I was really impressed with the health animation, and the backtracking once you had the right skills felt great.

Developer (1 edit)

Yeah, I broke the i-frames before submitting the game a final time, same with the enemy explosion when you beat the boss.

Coyote time wasn't added, mostly related to the fact that the Collision box is significantly bigger than the size of a normal player, so you can actually go extremely far out before you fall... It's similar to the distance I would have allowed a normal player collision to walk off with coyote time. I will think about how to implement it in the future, since having it be able to walk too far will look really bad.

The attack is similar to the roar in The Lion King (Sega), where you stop to stun your enemies early game. There were plans for more attacks that would have countered the claw attack, but the claw was supposed to be a high-risk risk high-reward attack, doing more damage than a longer distance means.

The camera needed to be zoomed out more and adjusted according to where the player jumped. There was going to be a crouch that shifted the camera down as well. When you are gliding, the camera would have centered more, and when you landed adjusted to be where it is now on the ground.

This game is fun, was a bit difficult for me though admittedly, hah. It's not a genre that I'm used to, that probably contributed.

The art is really good, I liked the music too. And I really appreciated the admin/polish of having a nice main menu with music & sfx sliders in the options, etc. There is a lot of good QOL things here, on top of a solid game. Very cool!

Developer

we're glad you enjoyed the game we hope to make it more polished in the future and have more areas and abilities that can be used for other things then just getting past an obstacles  for example how the roll was really only useful for getting through gaps the player couldn't walk through. We were inspired by platformers and metroidvanias. I personally really like castlevania and metroid so it inspired my art a little bit.

Developer

Appreciate the feedback! We had a really cool UI originally, but some weird stuff was going on with it, so we had to simplify it for now. )

WAIT THERE WAS NO END SCREEN?!?! Well I did beat the boss but he just stood there for a sec after it and then to the main menu I got..

But, this was really well put together! Like I really enjoyed exploring and gathering all the abilities which were required to progress and finally beat the boss.

Tho I do have some problems/suggestions

- Coyote time.. More often than not, Id just miss the jump and fall to my death xD
- The camera.. When u jump, the camera instantly follows the player and goes up, this makes it incredibly hard to know where to land! It was hard enough already even without that cam going up. But it just increased the difficulty.
- The camera 20: When jumping off a high point, you have no way of knowing whats below. Yes slowing is a possibility, but as the cat is not in the centre of the screen but a bit below it, you have to react rather quickly
- When you are moving fast and collide with an enemy.. It does bounce you back, but if u dont react instantly, the cat just blitzes towards the same enemy in the next frame and repeat untill death. Maybe the player stops after taking dmg and/or we get some invinsibility frames to get more time to react.
- The attack feels a bit too slow and also the keybind for it being f is not my fav choice. Atleast for me, I generally like abilities/attacks being mouse bound instead of keyboard bound.

Other than that, I really liked the exploration aspect, but I do think some imp abilites are completely missable if the player is not paying attention, maybe some clues or clever lvl design to hint towards there being a branch path to the player.

I LOVED the artstyle and the animations alike, you really nailed that part. The games atmosphere was really cool!
Minor Nitpick: Though the cat's walk animation didnt feel synced with the walk speed

The game really was fun! I loved the whole level design and checkpoint placement (Other than the last second checkpoint lmao, I came from the top but missed the checkpoint and had to redo the whole climb again xD)

Especially how the abilities were introduced to the player through no text prompt but just plain obstacles. Like you get an ability and it just tells you how to activate it, but nothing about how it works and stuff.
And the obstable and the situation makes it self explanatory as to what the ability is and how it works. Real cool

Overall, loved the gameplay and the visuals! Tho the gameplay could definitely use some more polish.
You did a great job! The game overall feels really polished as itself and also finished

Keep working hard! :D

Developer

there was just the credits screen as the end screen how ever if you hit a key on the keyboard it just instantly disappears. Good job beating the boss :3 we will be working on a 2.0 release soon with a bunch of bug fixes but we will be taking out time with it we don't want to rush ourselves to add a bunch of content and areas with different feels then the last. I am glad you enjoyed the game none the less.

Developer

I appreciate the detailed feedback.

I 100% skipped coding in the coyote time, good job on catching that. You're the first to say something about it. That cat's collision box is so wonky it created its own coyote time, almost, so I didn't worry too much about it..

As for the camera, because I was using some pixel snap settings, if you hit a corner of the deadzone block in Godot, it causes a strange stutter, so I just left it out and didn't worry about it for now. I wanted to code my camera controls because I wanted more player control over it. One thing I should have done for sure, though, was to zoom the camera out quite a bit.

There is a credits scene, but if you press a button after the boss dies, you jump past it quickly. It even had its unique song for when you beat the boss... It's possible to go into credits and hear it after you beat the game, but I don't have saves added to this game. It is 100% possible it reads mouse movement also... I think I forgot to add a check for that. A

The boss used to have explosions, but when I went in to fix a couple of things, I accidently disabled them.... same with i-frames and I had no clue until it was too late (sorry about that!)

I'll keep that attack being mouse in mind when we do an update. I was debating on speeding up the attack also, but when I did it before, it looked odd. ( I was surprised how hard it is to work with 4 legged creatures in games. It's my first time doing that.

Thank you so much for the feedback

Nice art and fun game, but the actual game is pretty hard for me.

Although well done from a jam perspective!

Developer(+1)

It's really not an easy game. It's why we added all those checkpoints. Pretty sure one of them got missed by a lot of ppl. Hopfully it didn't ruin your experience, and thank you for the feedback!

Not at all, it was fun!

Please check out my submission too.

Developer(+1)

Working on it. :) I make sure I check everyone's game out that left a comment

The art is lovely and the movement mechanics and level design are great! I unfortunately couldn't finish the game due to getting softlocked at the rolling segment (I unlocked the glide, then tried to glide while rolling in the tunnel, and got stuck in a permanent fallstate) but what I could play was very good <3

Developer

sorry about that, I did notice an issue with the roll where it's possible to get stuck in those areas, but I didn't quite have time to fix the bug. It's pretty hard to do so, I'm impressed. It sounds like you were outside the boss door, though.

Submitted(+1)

fun and charming game. This could be Metroidvania of the year if this was a full game with a few more mechanics. I didn't understand how to beat the boss (but that's probably just me) and the camera was kinda wonky, so I couldn't see what was beneath me. Still great game!

Developer

Yeah, the camera was just thrown on the player with no modifications. I should have probably done that at the very least. To defeat the boss, you have to go between its head after the fireballs and while it's doing the head attack, get an attack or two in. While the fireballs are going off, you have to navigate your jump and glide a bit.

Played this game just because I like cats a lot lol and it didnt disappoint me. Really liked the graphics, especially the cat sprite (said earlier that I like cats a lot :) ). The game fits the theme well, saw that you were inspired by  metroidvania and it really felt like it. Great job!

Developer

We appreciate that! We like cats also, and Zorp worked hard on the cat sprite. I had to have them revise it a few times. I bet they got sick of me with that :D. I'm happy the inspiration came through

Submitted(+1)

Fun: amazing, the movement was smooth, the ability that you gain with time, and the boss fight, great work.

Presentation: I really like the art style, especially the cat. Did you draw it yourself, or is it an asset? It does lack sound effects, though.

Creativity: starting with nothing and slowly gaining ability, great idea, fits the theme well, actually similar to my game, it has a similar idea.

Developer(+1)

Zorp used an asset as a reference, but we needed a lot more than the asset pack provided.  So we ended up making our own in the long wrong. Zorp made all the assets from scratch. Using references here and there to help build on the idea.

I was the only one in the group who could do SFX, but I was also the lead programmer and had tons of stuff to clean up to make sure the game stayed fun.

I appreciate the praise for the movement system. It is a reworked system I use in a game I've been making for a bit now. I'm happy the boss wasn't too hard. I had to increase the idle time justa  bit longer to make the fight a bit more fair.

When Shovel announced the theme Just Get Started it reminded me of how metroidvania's work is where you start with almost nothing. So I took it a bit further and made it so you can only walk.  I wanted to spend more time on level design then I personally did, but in the end it didn't work out.

I will be checking your game out in a moment! I always make sure to check everyone's game out who comments. :)

Cool idea, the upgrades, designs and the boss reminds me of something out of metroid. Sometimes it was hard to jump up onto something but it was enjoyable!

Developer

Ah, yeah, I think the issue related to this is that I use a variable jump height, which means you have to hold the jump down to get the most height out of it. The moment you let go, you start to fall back down. This was not clearly indicated in the game, so it appears to have caused some issues. Perfect, we had a mix influence of sonic and metroid when coming up with the game. Although the sonic side isn't as prominent.

The art is so nice, amazingly done! Also love the music. I only wish there was a "meow" button xD

I don't know if im just bad, but this game is super hard!

Developer(+1)

Yeah, the game wasn't designed to be super easy. That being said there are a few hitbox and hurtbox size issues so that really don't help at all either lol.

The meow button was thought of at the last second I also have like a cyber meow sfx in the files somewhere. Just never implemented it.

Submitted(+1)

Loved the art style, especially with the cat and enemy sprites! It was a good challenge! Main thing that gave me issues was the knockback, like Lezheart mentioned. Great game idea!

Developer

Haha, the super knockback.  Yeah, that knock back is pretty nasty! Sorry about that!

Submitted(+1)

It took me a while to see you uses the more 3d dimension style like approach like megamind , which is really nice.  The art of the cat is really cute and reminds me of cat in Hi-fi rush with the color parttern, The movement with the running and son on is tight and nice

Developer

Haha, yeah we did use the cat from hi-fi as a reference for the character. We thought it would be a cute homage to the game. Even though I personally never played it all the way threw.

Submitted(+1)

Amazing art with the background and the boss.

I do like the discovering mechanics part, sort of like a metroidvania game, but I would have like to see it more tied in to a story somehow. Just walking around then picking up a new button feels a bit contrived to me, haha, but I'm sure you could have done more given more time.

Developer (2 edits)

The story idea was that you are one of the cloned cyborg cats that were born in the tubes. The lab was being evacuated, and you were almost evacuated (it's why the tube you are in is empty, it was yours, and there is a carrier cage next to some of the tubes.) Something came up and you were left behind. Time passes, and you finally boot yourself up and begin to explore on your own. You as the cat find these chips that store data on how to do things, and as you get close to the chips, you learn the details. Like you said, if we had time, we would have gotten more into details, but the most we could do was tell it threw the environment and let others decide what was going on.

Submitted(+1)

Great art, smooth gameplay. I am not sure about the hitboxes, especially for such chonky sprites. A fun play.

Developer

Yeah, I was surprised how hard it is to capture the hurtbox for the cat. I also think I made the microwave hitboxes bigger than I wanted. Thank you for the feedback!

Submitted(+1)

Great game and amazing art!

Loved the idea that you get the new mechanics after a while)))

It is also a bit challenging but I had a great time playing it!

Developer

We appreciate it. I think we were a bit over our heads on the level design, but I think we got something decent out of it.

Submitted(+1)

A cute game with rally nice art and fun gameplay. Some improvements I could suggest is making the camera more active, becuse sometimes I encountered a situation when I had to jump down into an unknown place. Also, I'd suggest making the player invulnerable for a bit after getting hit, becuase now, the game sometimes creates a situation when a [rpjectile pushes you into a different projectile/enemy, which is really frustrating. Apart from that the game's really fun, cute, and the music adds to the atmosphere even more. Great job!

Developer(+1)

I did have i-frames at one point, but when I went in to change something a the last second, it appears I broke a few things. like the i-frames and the boss explosions. Thank you so much for the feedback! When I update the game, I will keep this all in mind.

Submitted(+1)

Great game ! I love the cat design! The difficulty was a bit high to me especial when the enemies push you when they hit you, but I’m bad at platformers in general so it might just be me, and I still had fun !

Developer

Don't worry, I'm pretty bad at platformers also. But no your right, the knockback is pretty high. There was a bug related to bumping into the enemy, so in order to prevent that, I did a band-aid fix by bumping the knockback a decent amount.

Submitted(+1)

Very fun game, and the movement is smooth and fantastic, and the art is really well done! Great job!

Developer

Thank you. We appreciate and we are happy you enjoyed the game!

Submitted(+1)

A catformer! If you work on this later, please add i-frames so you can't get hit one after the other in quick succession. It made a chunk of the deaths feel unfair. Zooming out so we can see upcoming platforms a little better would be nice too. Cute game; good job (◕‿◕✿)

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing, and appreciate the feedback. Apologies on the camera and the i-frames exist ... but when I did some last moment changes it appears it broke during that time, so I would have to look into why that happened.

Submitted

Ahh, my music loop broke when I exported, so I feel you (つ╥﹏╥)つ

Developer

oh yeah... web exports are weird in order to handle it properly, you have to change the loop option in the import tab or modify the .import file in godot.
