Very cute animals ) I liked the references to the games of the previous rounds.

For some reason I couldn't stun enemies with the left mouse button, only with the right one.

maybe I did something wrong

Developer

You didn't do anything wrong. I did lol. There was no feedback for that, so even if you did you probably didn't realize because there's not any indication. Thanks for playing!

Submitted(+1)

ah, now I get it! Yes, feedback would be very helpful here)

Great submission to the jam. THe music choice is good, the character variety is cute and i like it, how you dont kill enemies in this game. It stands out from the other submission. I also encountered the bugs, that are already mentioned here, but no biggie. It happens :)
Good job on your part, i hope well see again in Round 4 :P

Developer

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed! IF I make it to round 4, I should find a worthy opponent in yourself!

The challenge of getting past invincible enemies was really good and I liked the knockback with the attacks and how they follow.  It's also good that you can tell where they are looking but they got a fast turn if you get too close to them but once I learned this I adapted my strategy. The difficulty curve was well-balanced and I made good progress with each attempt. Dashing around the level and luring the enemies was fun and I found the attacks being more useful on enemies with there backs turned which gave variety to how I played. I think it is worth mentioning that I encountered two bugs: 1) characters were invisible in the selection screen after continuing and 2) the bird character became invisible during gameplay

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing, and I'm so glad you enjoyed! Yeah, those were known bugs in playtesting that I just never got around to. Things like sfx, levels and reworking the main menu took their place sadly.

A great combination of your game from last round and Gain Grounds. I tried to get the left mouse click to work but gave up after dying too many times. I was able to use the right click and dash to sneak around and get to the end. Fun game.

Developer

Thanks for playing, and I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, I had some balancing issues that I just didn't have time to work out.  The left click in particular is a problem for most people.

It's funny how beetle can go through the map :D :D :D I was trying to rescue him so hard :D :D :D

Let me know if I missed something in my playthrough and I will try again, but the shooting mechanics didn't seem to work for me and I found that the best way beating the round is to dash through it.

Developer

Nah, you pretty much got it. The dash ability allows teleporting in the direction highlighted with a brighter green color in the UI where the character selector is. If you line up the attack with an enemy, it will stun them for a few seconds.

The default attack is a shove, but I added the feedback for a successful shove, but not when you press the button, so it feels like it doesn't do anything.

Thanks for playing! I could tell you really tried to save beeto.

I love the music and the art and SFX. Some of the powers didn't completely make sense or work the way I thought they would and I do lament the lack of a way to deal direct damage to the enemies, but I loved the different characters and the level design was very peak- Lots of risk vs reward and opportunities for player choice.

Overall I think it could have benefitted from a bit more time, but- Deadlines gonna deadline, trust me, I get it. I hope to see you again in Round 4, great work!

Developer

There's a part of me that hopes I'm not in round 4 tbh lol. Deadlines do deadline after all.

Cool game! I think the gain ground mechanics were very well implemented. However the best strategy I found was to ignore all of the abilities and dash through the level as quickly as possible, leading to every character playing fundamentally the exact same. The music was fun and exciting and the UI was generally pretty clean, although the tutorial at the start, for my screen size at least, just had text boxes in random places on the screen as opposed to where it seemed like they were meant to be.  I also don't know what the shove did I just never used it because I didn't get any feedback for pressing the button. Overall, nicely done!

Developer

Very good feedback, I appreciate your thoroughness. I definitely considered removing the dash  / making the enemies faster, but just ran out of time for a second playtest. The tutorial text was definitely an issue that I knew would get someone. It came down to having to create extra dependencies on the UI itself, which I just didn't have time to sort out as the tutorial was the very last thing I built lol. And yes, for some reason I added sfx for when a shove is successful, but not for when the button is pressed. Idk why I didn't think about that.

TLDR, thanks for playing, and thanks for the feedback.

Its a fun game and i gotta say I love the artstyle!

Fun to Play: Yes good gameplay loop and great design level wise. Showing the preview of the layout was a real smart thing to do

Core elements: Sure did! Savior, bullet patterns, multiple characters so no feedback on this

Well polished: I did encounter a few bugs. Beto and other dash characters can get out of bounds, going to the main menu and restarting doesnt load characters again you can still start but it just stops the game

Sound fx: they were okay only the shove attack had no effect or sound effect so I had no clue what it did and could figure it out since when I got too close they shot me

UI: Great clear and not overwelhming!

Overall very good job! Sad for the bugs but this round was harsh, for a recreate it was really good!

Developer(+1)

The main menu glitch is a great find. I'm definitely hiring you for playtesting the rest of my games lol.  I'm honestly amazed that's all you found as I can think of a few more.  Thanks for the feedback buddy, you're a worthy nemesis.

Fun game! I like how it's a strategy to bait enemies into a place where they can't be annoying for the rest of your allies, allowing you to speeddash your way through quickly :D I managed to beat the game but the leaderboards weren't working for me.

Nicely done game, good job :D

Developer

Thanks for the info on the leaderboard. I'm not surprised honestly because it's a copy paste from last round, so I'm sure there's some dependency I didn't fix. Thanks for playing, and I can't wait to see what you did!

Fun game! The unkillable enemies and speed boost mechanics make the game feel high-paced. I loved all the reference characters. I found out you can get soft-locked using some special abilities with teleport. You can teleport out of the map with no way to get back or switch characters. It is a very minor issue.
Still a fun game, great job!

Developer

Thanks for the info on the soft-lock. I thought I had a fix for that, but I might not have done that for every level.  I'm glad you enjoyed, and I can't wait to see what you did!

My little turtle friend is back...

You nailed the Gain Ground mechanics to a tee, multiple characters, the ability to collect the characters, timer, escape point etc. The backing track slapped, and you had some nice sound effects in there. I can tell you worked a lot on those UI elements, they looked really nice. I was getting my ass handed to me by the enemies, maybe a skill issue on my part though. The fact that you managed to produce this whilst fixing you broken car was a valiant effort. Good job man!

Developer

Thanks! I think I nerfed the player a bit too much in that regard lol. I had some feedback in playtesting that the enemies were too easy (and too few) So I think I overcompensated. Thanks for playing, can't wait to see what you did!

Much cleaner entry than the demo I tried a few days before!

The levels feel much more engaging, and the line of sight indicators on the enemies does add to the stealthy suspenseful vibe. I almost wouldnt mind a version of the game where the enemies are unkillable haha

Only one critique, in the second to last level, theres a unit to rescue thats placed in a spot where you cant get to it. Otherwise great!

Developer(+1)

Dang! I thought I had all rescue dudes fixed, but I definitely did forget that one. I thought I uploaded a version where the enemies are unkillable? Might be another bug tbh. There's so much jank lol.

Can't wait to see what you did!
