Oh this is an amazing game! It works very well for the theme and focus and is a lot of fun to play. The only issues I sort of have is that I don't think I ever saw the tutorial text explain the apples, and that on what I believe were levels 3 and 4, I slept only to spawn with monsters right at the campfire. That last one could be simplified by making sure the monsters aren't right there at the start of the level, or giving a little screen between levels for the player to click when they're really ready for the next level. Like maybe it's just an image of the character sleeping, but it could also give you a moment to not only take a breather between levels, but potentially also see what equipment you have since I was very glad to see the items you gathered carried over into the next level.

I really enjoyed the fact that the night got darker as you went on, making it harder to see so you would be more likely to move on to the next level. The light around the player could have been a little bigger, maybe less of a static circle and maybe more it's a light that fades a little as it gets further out, but it works as is. Plus the fact that later in the night becomes a little more of a struggle means you can't as easily just stick to an easy level to hunt monsters and grab plenty of materials so you can grind your way to be stronger to make later levels easy.

Lastly, it might have been nice to make the game fullscreenable. I've got a computer with high enough resolution that game game took up a little more than a ninth of my screen. It was still absolutely playable, but it would be nice to resize the game. (I saw you made in in game maker, so it's pretty easy to make it resizable, it's just hidden in a menu that I know I had to look up to find for mine)

Anyway, I really hope to see you potentially add more to this game as it's really good! definitely one of my favorites from the jam I've seen.

Small addition, love the fact that coming here to leave a comment or rate it has the name of the page being 'rate this stick i found' which makes the title even better. yes I would love to rate the stick. that sure is a ten out of ten stick. strong and sturdy but easy to swing.

wow that is a lot of feedback. and yeah, this game could use a lot of improvements. I never mentioned it, but apples give you shields that can tank enemy damage and not lower your overall health and candles are supposed to give you back health temporarily as long as you are near it, i thought I would let players learn and see what items do on their own. I also got bombarded with enemies when i start a new level and I'm forced to adapt. I thought I fixed that during the jam, but i must've not. your idea of a screen that gives you a breather and a neat one and I plan to add that in later versions of the game. I've gotten feedback about Fullscreen and the player light already so this the just ensures that this should be changed as soon as possible (I checked and you're right, allow Fullscreen switching is right there, thanks :))  Im glad you still enjoyed the game overall. you along with everyone else who has commented have really encouraged me to keep working on this game and try to make it a full release after the jam is over.

Glad to hear! I know I'm planning to fix up the smaller issues in my game when the jam voting is over and I can edit my game, but then I'm planning to go back and make a v2 that redoes a lot. But in general, I'm hoping to see which games do get updated versions because ones like this I love enough I would really love to see that updates version.

Great implementation of the jam focus. All applications of the stick are both useful and easy to use. The day/night mechanic works well, making it very difficult to stay up too late. The graphics and sound work well together to create a suitable atmosphere.

The circle of light around the character at night should be a little broader, I think. When using the stick as a compass, I can't even see the end of the stick.

The toolbar at the bottom looks somewhat squished.

The hero stands out against the background, of course, but would look more interesting with a little bit of color.

Developer(+2)

thanks for playing and for your critique. I played my game again and you're right, the circle of light is too small. so im going to add that to my todo list of things to change, and I also noticed that you are right about the inventory is too close to the bottom, am also going to tweak that when I get the chance

Amazing game, had a blast playing it! The art is quite impressive and gives tons of character to the game, the controls are also really solid.

Congratulations :)

I love the graphic design, but unfortunately it is to hard to play without an qwerty keyboard ;-(

Developer(+1)

thank you, im glad you enjoy my game, currently i don't know how to  make it adaptable for all kinds of keyboards but I'll look into it in the future

Awesome game! I found the different uses for the stick to be really inventive and original. The night cycle was well implemented, though I kept waiting for some big monster to pop out at night. I was too much of a chicken to stay out past dark and see what happened lol anyway, excellent work :)

Developer(+2)

I can't believe the MightyJor likes my game :) . your channel introduced me to the concept of the vim jam, and I've wanted to join one ever since. I was thinking of adding something like a huge boss monster or waves of enemies when it turns dark, but I wasn't sure of what it should be, and I didn't want to over scope.  but I want to add something that could test your strength after the jam is over

Submitted

Ok, you have no idea how much that means to me. You freaking made my day!! The fact that I had even a small part in inspiring someone to participate in a jam brings me so much joy.  Keep up the good work! This game is a gem :D

I had a blast, the combat and movement felt great.

Stick it to heaven , now This stick I found , is there's a trend here that I'm missing related to sticks and beating up stuff with sticks?

  • anyways you two made an excellent game your artsyle is incredible      Graphics/Animations 5/5
  • the gameplay is fun and addictive and I actually like survival games like this reminds me of "Don't starve" and at some point "dayz" even tho they're entirely the same but I felt like the game was too intense that I compared it to that Fun/Design 5/5
  • the sfx you used are incredible and fitting           Music/Sound 5/5
  • there's alot of effort and love that went into the making of this game
  • can't believe you guys to make this game the approach to the theme was unique and your approach to the focus was unique aswell     theme/limitation 5/5
  • didn't really encounter alot of bugs or glitches however the game was a bit too difficult after the second day but thats fine Technical implementation 5/5
Developer(+2)

Wow  5/5? thanks for the amazing rating. A lot of people think that the difficulty curve is too big, im looking to improve that after the jam

Submitted

It was a fun experience.

I like the interpretation of a child imagining their stick with multiple uses.

The music was also very good, and I like the scribbly design of everything.

Developer(+1)

Im glad you enjoyed it. I'll let my friend know that people really love his music

The art style is really fun - movement and combat too!

Developer(+1)

thank you,  I could say the same about your game too

Deserves the 🥇

Developer

thank you : ). I enjoyed making this game and im glad you enjoy it too

A great game! I only made it to night 4 but I still love the mechanics and the setting!

Developer

thanks for your positive comment, your game was nice to play too

Submitted(+1)

I dont know how you got this finished in the deadline. This is amazing! deserves the win in my opinion. Great game!

I agree with you!!!

Developer

thanks! im also not so sure as to how I was able to put everything I wanted in time, the whole development time felt like a blur to me, your game was really fun to play too

Submitted(+1)

Congrats for the game, really had fun playing it. The focus and the team were really nicely used. If I am to point something, I used the bushes as a cover from the monsters, so some time I would just let them be trapped while I was collecting wood.
Great job!

awesome game!!!!

Developer

thank you. im happy that there are people who really like it

Just played this, and let me tell you, this is a banger! You guys truly went above and beyond with the theme, multi-use. The graphics, the sound and the simple gameplay. truly delightful.

I was a bit lost at first because I was reading the text on the top portion of the screen, and I did try using my stick as an axe, but man...little did I know I had an array of tools with this skinny fellow!
I did find the tree chopping mechanic a bit non-intuitive, and a bit inaccurate at times,  unless you understood the same stick is used for everything else. Once it clicked I found it genius!

I think the truly one and only biggest offender was the lack of fullscreen here. I was clicking outside the game window constly, and this was a bit too sad. I must ask...y U no fullscreen mang?

Truly one of the heavy hitters of this jam. Wish I had not decided to play this game so late, and left it for tomorrow to stream it along with the other games.

Great job guys!

Edit: Another thing I forgot to mention, I was never able to go to the next night...where was the tent? i never found it. I''ll give thi sa go tomorrow again on stream. Hope to see you guys there!
treblig_punisher is my twitch page :D

Developer (2 edits) (+2)

thanks for your input. someone else was also upset about the lack of full screen lol. i didn't really think about adding it at all and ill change that later when i get the chance. I would love to join your stream and see how much fixing the gameplay needs. hopefully i can make it after my classes end today. your game was really fun to play too

edit: about that tent.... I have no idea what could have happened. if you mean the tent disappeared from being where the campfire was, I have no clue, I also caught that error AFTER the game was submitted which was weird because that was the first time it happened to me so I can't even begin to answer that question, but if you mean you were just lost, imagine the stick into a compass, it will always point towards your campfire, which is where the tent should be. I'm going to look into what's causing the tent to clip out of reality post jam

Submitted(+1)

Gonna be streaming the game in a bit, so if you can tune in to twitch, go ahead. Yeah, I never saw the tent. It was just the fire, and nothing else.
Would love to play your game in glorious 4k fullscreen!

Submitted(+1)

This made me feel like I was playing Don't Starve, I liked the survival aspect and having to adventure out  into the woods to keep your fire going. The art style felt like a coloring book and it was all consistent throughout the game. The only change is maybe lower the difficulty curve, it got super crazy by the third level/day. Also I couldn't full screen the game, I'm not sure if I missed an option or if the game is just windowed.

Still liked this entry and I hope you take the game further!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

thanks for reviewing. honestly I didn't think about the people who would want to play the game Fullscreen, I'm going to change that post jam. i tried making the game more difficult after my friend said the game was way too easy, I'll look into fixing that too. And after getting all of these nice comments about how nice my game is, I feel motivated to go through with this and try to fully flesh it out. I haven't been able to fully commit to a game for a while now, so I want to definitely try my best to see this game to its completion

Submitted(+1)

I think tuning the difficulty is the hardest thing to do during a game jam. When I did the first VIMJAM a couple years ago, I got a lot of comments saying my game was too difficult which I didn't think so while testing it because I had played the game 1,000 times before uploading it. Also the full screen thing is kinda just preference I think if you decide to take the game further, you can always start the game full screen but give the player the option for windowed/fullscreen

Submitted

Even though mechanically you're just switching to different tools, thematically making all of them the same tool is really neat idea!
At first I thought the magic wand was gonna be the best for dealing with enemies, but once the enemies themselves started throwing projectiles, the sword became way better because it destroyed the enemies projectiles way more reliably.
I didn't like how when I get enough green coins to get an upgrade I'm forced to stop moving and choose the upgrade while all the enemies get to keep attacking. The game should pause when choosing what upgrade to get.
At the end, the game crashed when transitioning from level 8 to level 9, but despite that I enjoyed my time whacking all the different enemies. Nicely done!

Developer(+2)

Thanks for your review. about the enemies moving while you are upgrading. that wasn't supposed to happen. they are supposed to stop while you upgrade, but i guess i didnt really test it out that much. ill try to fix that post jam. and about the game crashing, my friend told me that it did happen, but it never happened to me. so it might take me a while to fix whatever happened there.

Art style and premise suits well, feels like a kid just imagining everything. Enjoyed it thoroughly

Developer

thanks for your nice comments. I pride myself on making good game art and I'm glad I've still got it

Submitted(+1)

A very nice little game. The theme is really well implemented in a fun way and the art style and music work really well. I also like the idea of how easily the stick is expandable with more tools in theory! Some of the hitboxes were a bit wonky or at least felt like it, mainly the projectiles and sometimes i felt like i was too close to one side of the screen, especially once there were ranged enemies. I really enjoyed the game though and played it for several levels, well done :)

Developer(+1)

thanks for the review. ill make sure to tell my friend that people really like his music and im glad you like my art style. im definitely going to go back and fix up those hitboxes and make those enemy projectiles smaller

Submitted(+1)

This is a solid little idea well made. I liked the focus use with the cool stick. Whilst the art style is pretty lofi it was really consistent and effective. I liked swithing quickly between the functions and I had a good time playing it. I felt the view was a bit to close. I would have liked to have a wider view. Overall I really liked it. Good job
