Wow, respect for going ahead and making a game in java, definitely an outlier in this jam.

I like how much complexity you managed to get into the gameplay.

I think my main issue is that there's no diagonal movement, making it feel a bit frustratingly stiff, otherwise, cool job!

nice idea! i think you could add in some explanation for the UIs

Who hurt you child ! Making this in pure java XD You're legendary. Now the game itself is a really cool concept, everything was very intuitive, I hadn't read the manual and I didn't come across problems or situations that would brick me. I feel like there could be some balancing issues, but these probably are a result from the unique game mechanic you went for, perhaps a couple of powerups would add spice. All in all I really like this entry, brownie points for using Java :D

Nice, it was intense and challenging!

Cool game! Switching between the player and zombie is a really cool mechanic and the art is super cool! I just wish that there was more balancing in terms of the zombie. I feel like there should've maybe been zombie powerups to either give them more health, or more speed, which would keep gameplay more exciting as the player, and more fair as the zombie.

That's really a great idea. I will surely add it in the next update. Unfortunately during the game jam, I had so many things to fix with the java build that I haven't got time. But thanks for this solution, maybe the zombies could collect the guns too.

Good job! Nice concept and fun gameplay!

This is a fun and chaotic and fun top down shooter! Love the swap mechanic basically turning yourself into a boss fight. Great job!

ooh im usually bored by 2d games but not this one

its surprisingly dynamic and fast paced, without being overwhelming. Even though I didnt know what to do it still wasnt overwhelming.

Yeah the only thing about this game is that judging by the description it seems very complex and i didnt understand it (i tried)

Make sure to write the description with as few words as possible and while keeping in mind that people tend to skim through text (even when the text is in the game itself)

But still, I had fun :D

Developer(+1)

thanks, yeah a tutorial is missing, I haven't much time because I needed to compile and build the webversion with java. I will add one in the next update

Good use of the theme, I like that you're periodically switched between the lone survivor and the zombies. I like that some zombies also have weapons, makes it feel a bit more fair once you swap. I do wonder though, if you purposefully lose most of your health when you're the player, and then swap to zombies side, would that count as a win or a loss? Something to consider is players throwing on purpose ;)
Would be great if there was diagonal movement, although limiting the movement in the 4 cardinal directions did make it more difficult, albeit at the expense of the players comfort.

Well done! I'd love to see this game expanded on :D

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing. No, if you lose health on purpose you won't achieve anything as everytime you switch mode, the player restores full health :)

Diagonal movement will be added right after the jam is fineshed with a post-jam update, so fell free to follow me so you get notified.

Aha, so I just didn't notice then ahhahah, well done so!
Will give it a shot once the updates out :)

-Enjoyment: It was chaotic fun times!

-Creativity: Very creative use of the theme!

-Presentation: The pixel art looked great and simple, I could easily catch everything on screen!

-Neat game indeed, I hope you learned a lot!! Please check out my non-creative entry when you can :D

Really difficult to approach the player as a zombie! Was quite fun!

Developer

I know, there are zombies with guns that with some techniques, you can defeat the player easily. Thanks for playing.

Really nice game! I am really bad at keeping an eye on everything at the same time. No boss was harmed in my tries haha!

I had a lot of fun playing and this is a nice concept! The art also is amazing! I love how you can  level up guns but then you have to think about if you really want to do that haha!

I didn't survive long but if you are skilled this game probably still is a challenge! Nice balancing :D

Thanks for playing!

Good AI. Presentation is ok for the short time

Developer

Thanks, if you are interested the AI simply calculates the angle between the player and the nearest enemy and shoots in that direction, so if you turn around the player with a gun you can easily defeat him :)

Loved the game. So much fun, and I beat the first boss. Never seen I game, where I was forced to take lower level guns for my player. So good.

My score is 4783.

Some notes:

- Health bar is somewhat small or something, sometimes I didn't notice that I was low on health.

- Maybe a bit more balance when you're playing as zombie

Developer

Glad you enjoyed it! You are one of the small amount of people who defeated the boss. In the next update I'm going to add some icons next to the bars to make them more clear and maybe balance the zombies.

cool game! i wish i had diagonal movement though, did you use if statements for movement input? i did also find it difficult to play as zombies. but overall very cool concept

Developer

Yeah unfortunately I used if and else if instead of only ifs. So you can move only one direction at a time. Thanks for the feedback.

Submitted(+1)

Great job on the AI, maybe too good. It was really difficult to get to the player as the zombies.

Submitted(+1)

Love the ones where you switch roles mid-game! Gorilla also looks super cool! Excellent job!

Submitted(+1)

I really loved the presentation on this game, great use of sound and camera shake really help sell the impact!

Submitted(+1)

I think gameplay is very good, you played as player first and then you play as the enemies. I find it very difficult to even shoot at the player, or even go up to the player before dying. Makes me feel like I am just controlling zombies to just die to the player. I find UI to be an issue as I don't think I know what those bars do.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thanks. For the first attemps it's really difficult I know, but once you figured out that you have to switch to a zombie with gun and you have to turn around the player to dodge the bullets ans shoot him, it gets very easy.

Regarding the ui, I'm sorry, I didn't put any icons to clarify what the bars are for (they are the cooldowns for explosion and heal, and the score for boss bars).

I will make an update with all those things fixed

A great little arcadey game. While it's apparent it's been made in 48 hours, it being in java makes up for that - you got a lot of stuff in this! Really impressed.
