How does your game fit the theme?
Every time you shoot at the aliens (bugs), the aliens shoot back. It's a mental/invisible link between the player and the enemies.

I really dig that soundtrack! I even went all the way and added it to my favourites in soundcloud!

The game itself is really polished and pleasant to look at.  I had fun playing it.  Though, as other commenters already stated, you should add more things to do if you'll update the game after the jam.

Developer

Hey ! thanks for going the extra mile and looking at my soundcloud !! I'll be posting there all my future video game soundtracks so that's really nice to read :D and thanks for the feedback, as you said other commenters already said a lot but it's still valuable to see that many people would give the same advice !

I always enjoy these 3D Galagas. I had my students making them this year. I like the change up in the AI. The game could use some variety in enemies and a power up. For the jam, I didn't see how it fits the theme of joined together. I know it's mentioned about their weapons being hacked. I just don't see that in the game.

EDIT:

I didn't notice at first. I read in the comments that your shots trigger the enemy's and I was like "oohhhh" so yeah, I'm dumb. Ignore me lol

Developer(+1)

Hey, thanks for playing ! You're not the first one to tell us that the mechanic wasn't very obvious so don't worry about that ! We'll work on making it more clear, and also yeah we obviously wanted to add more enemies but there's only so much we could do in 48h haha !

Submitted(+1)

I do see the idea you had to make it so the shots were linked with your enemies, but I don't feel like it really worked on a level you wanted it to. Its a real shame because I do see the idea here.

There just needed to be a little more to do in the game, because as it stands right now, its just kind of a galaga clone with extra steps.

I do really enjoy the presentation of this though, I just feel like it wasn't really there as far as a finished product.

Developer

Well said.

Thank you for playing and taking the time to comment.

Awesome original idea and good presentation! I'd like to have a way of seeing your own health but other than that it seems pretty good!

Itts a really interesting concept and has a lot of potential (maybe some enemies can only be killed if they shoot eachother or are unreachable by you so you have to use the other ones). One thing you could have done is making the bullets a little more visible cuz they melt with the background, nice ntry.

Finally got around to playing this one. Really cool use of the theme and I had a lot of fun pushing the game mechanic to my advantage as much as I can. Great work! Great assets. Great Game!

Developer

Heeeeyyyyy!!!

Don't worry about the wait, it's good to see you here either way! Thanks for playing and glad you liked it!

I like the idea of you being in control (partial) of both your characters and the hazards. That is a rather clever use of the theme.

I can also kinda see what you were going for with both the enemies having same speed, projectile speed, same projectile, same propulsion effects, that's really neat. That said I do wish the player ship moved a little bit faster so as to be able to catch up to the enemies moving away from you without needing to wait to them to change directions.
Lining up shots on distant enemies was also rather difficult, with the relative slow speed of your projectile and the very slight perspective shift towards the middle the further away something was.

I also noticed that sometimes enemies would refuse to shoot if there was another one of their own in front of them. I think letting them kill each other on your command would have added to the fun of the game.

Overall, very neat idea, could do with some more refinement. Little things like showing the life bar (I do assume there was some health system in the game since I seemed to be able to tank 2 shots before dying to the 3rd).

Hey, thanks a lot for playing and for the review! All of the things said here have been noted down.

During development, I did purposefully make it hard for enemies to shoot themselves as I thought it would make the game too easy. However, I now see that was a bad descision and the game would be more strategic and improved overall with more friendly fire.

A life bar or some other hp indicator, yeah that's a "whoops" on me. It was planned, but I made some poor descisions that cut off time to make it.

Finally, I'll play around with the balance of projectile speed and player speed.

Once again, thank you very much for playing and the review. I'd love to upload a new version of the game once the jam is over if I can, cheers!

I didn't get the link to the theme at first, but then i realised i was stupid. Nice mechanic. Good game, good music. Only complaint is that it feels a little stiff.

Developer

Many people told us that they didn't realize the mechanic at first haha, don't worry you're not stupid !

Submitted(+2)

Fun concept, makes you think before you shoot. Music started kind of slow but then really picked up 😎

Submitted(+3)

Really good shmup, I like how you implemented the theme, that's a really fun mechanic, the music was absolutely incredible! The person who done that should be absolutely proud of themselves. Good entry!

Developer

thanks a lot, I did the music and I really appreciate your feedback :D

Cool idea.  Consider making the particles based in world-space instead of local-space.  That  way, the jet/smoke will flow more naturally from the source and result in some cool visuals.  In any case, nice work!

Developer(+1)

Ohhhh, interesting. Thanks for the tip!

Submitted(+1)

Cool concept and art but I couldn't play as every time I shot, the bullets I shot out just hit my ship and I lost health. Don't know if it's a bug or not.

Developer

Wait what? Oh dear! That sounds like a really bad bug alright, could you please describe in more detail of how that happened, what did you do?

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

I just moved to the right and shoot while moving. It also sometimes happens when shooting while staying still. The bullet comes out of my body and collides with it instantly.

Developer

That's really weird... The spawnpoint for the bullets is in front of the player and you're the first to report this bug.

Thank you for bringing this up, it's weird alright and shouldn't be able to happen to begin with. But I'll look into it.

Developer(+1)

UPDATE: I found the issue! Will make sure to upload a patched version for the game once the jam is over with this fix, along with fixes to some other problems.

Thanks again for bringing up this bug!

Health indicator would be nice, although you know that, and also maybe faster shooting.

Developer

Yeah you're right. My bad for not having time to make an hp indicator :/

Still, thanks for playing.

Submitted(+2)

Some suggestions would be some sort of health indicator and let the enemies shoot themselves, because I think it would take more advantage of this mechanic. If you added enemy varieties that shot different ways you could go far with this idea.

Developer(+2)

yes we had a lot of ideas to take more advantage of the mechanics (shielded enemy that can only get hit from behind, so you need to use another enemy to shoot it) but unfortunately didn't have enough time to implement them :/

Submitted

totally get it, happens to the best of us

Developer

Chouette basically covered what I was going to say. All I will add is that I think there are 2-3 waves where the enemies can actually shoot themselves, as I tried to somewhat take advantage of the mechanics with the little time I had left.

That said, you're right. There's definitely more we could've done.

Submitted(+2)

Really cool concept! This kind of mechanic is really interesting! I came across a bug where there would be either phantom bullets, or the bullet hit me even though the visual showed differently. I love the space theme! I would suggest toning down the stars' opacity just a touch to make the bullets stand out. I think this game is pretty cool! Great job! :D

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot for the kind words and feedback! I'll be writing down the suggestions and bugs!

Submitted(+2)

Loved the music. Cool concept that was kind of hidden in there, that the enemies shoot when you do. I was really terrible at the game unfortunately! Haha

Developer(+1)

Thanks ! Yes maybe we could have done something to make the concept more clear, you're not the first one to say that it was "hidden"

Submitted(+2)

Interesting mechanics of having the enemies shoot when you do. Audio sliders would have been nice.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback ! Did you think the music was too loud in comparison with the sound effects ?

Submitted(+2)

nice look to the game. Once I realized the enemies shoot when I do, it became way more strategic!
