Really cool adventure platformer. Great implementation of the theme. Good job!
Many thanks
I like it, it’s not bad at all such a nice side scroller prototype! Of course, there are things that could be improved, but that’s the case with every jam game.
I’m curious, how much actual time did it take you to make this? For the next jam, I’d also like to try Unreal, so if you have any advice or tips on what to avoid, I’d appreciate it!
Overall, I rate your game positively :) Great job!
happy to hear, and thank you for taking the time checking it out.
It took me approximate 40hours worktime from Brainstorming to finished project. So really doable for a weeklong or longer Game Jam. Blueprints can help you to prototype very fast (even though I prefer writing everything in c++). Not sure if it is the VSC implementation but Live Coding sucks so hard, can’t recommend using it. But you can compile while the Editor is running (beware which compile parameter you use, I wasted way too much time because I forgot the Editor parameter). Build it often, and wait for GC cycles while trying it out. Had to refactor my code in another projects for weeks due to Access Violations. Due to the fact Unreal Engine is the only Game Engine I know, I can’t compare it, if something is easier or harder here.
If you are no artist, there are so many free Asset (permanently free, so usable) so you don’t have to worry.
I think this is like a very rough overview.
Very nice-looking game. Would've enjoyed some more SFX. I could not find the last one. Wasn't sure where to go.
yeah Music and SFX aren’t really my strong suit. I have approximate 100 GB stored on my drive, waiting to be implemented when the Jam is over. The “no paid Assets”, hit me pretty hard in this category, similar to you.
If you want to know where all off them are, I made a Gameplay Video for the people who can’t download the game. Link to the Video
Clever game! A quick hint for the early puzzles would be useful. I almost thought there was something wrong with the game when i discovered the gap where I could fit when I was small. I flung myself over to the next platform successfully, but couldn’t figure out how to go further. Well done!
The rotating Platform is a joy for everyone who doesn’t love gravity :)
Could you a little more specific how such a hint should look like? I normally give the player the possibility to find out on their own, but still it shouldn’t lead to frustration.
Cool game and trippy concept! I loved the mechanic where you shrink in order to fit into small crevices.
I kept getting caught by the first guard because I was so big and she was tiny and I couldn't notice her! x
Nice vibes you got there! Have a nice game jam!
Thank you for testing it out, and the kind words.
Sorry, you couldn’t rescue the Quatsch Quartett 😔
Nice concept that fits in really well with the theme, a fun addition could be if the Quartett provided buffs or special abilities that were required to get through the next puzzle for example if one of them actually gave you the ability to shrink, which would be required in order to progress the level & then the next giving you the ability to Jump and so on. Adds a bit of functionality to them then once you have found them all you move onto a more complex level where you need to utilise all of the Quartetts abilities to complete it and get them Home to safety or wherever the story progresses to. Could be like pokemon meets platforming haha but yeah really nice concept, good job!
Many thanks for testing it out.
I had some ideas in this direction. Having a more Metroivenia feel to the game. But due to the time constraint, I rather scrapped this idea.
After the jam I intend to further optimize the game (and add some cut ideas)
got the quatsch quartett back together, those little rascals!
the game felt really trippy somehow: the combination of over-the-top AAA graphics and a somewhat jenky/unpolished gameplay and the goofy narrative created a weird feeling of disconnect that was somehow... strangely engaging? using graphical assets of a quality that outshines your coding abilities usually spells catastrophy, but you kind of make it work. it was probably thanks to kacki that little turd.
Happy you found the Quatsch Quartett, to be honest this review had me in tears, laughing. Many thanks for playing it, and reviewing it in such a detailed manner.
I already have some ideas to optimise the gameplay after the game jam. With Kacki on my side it can’t go wrong.
Nice game.
Watched the video and it seems quite good.
Good job on making it!
Thank you! I had a blast making it, glad you liked the video.
watched your video. looks like a very cinematic game. well done. I rated it based on the video, but would have been nice to see even more game play. congrats on completing the game jam
Thank you for the rating and the kind words. It was an incredible experience to participate.
If you like you can watch the full gameplay in this video
The screenshots make it look like some real work has gone into this, but I'm unable to download a 1.7 GB game to my laptop (only a small SSD) to test it sorry.
I hope someone takes the time to have a look and good luck!
The curse and blessing of Unreal Engine. Games look great, but they are rarely small. I’m by far not a experienced developer, and for me it was a very intense week to publish the game.
Still many thank to have a look.
The screenshots look really good.
I really do hope someone plays it.
I also hope for someone to play it.
But can now watch the full Game, if you like: full Gameplay
Finally got a chance to look at some of the footage for your game.
Rated based off what I saw.
Looking at the video, it looks like some of the character animations could use a bit of refinement, as well as the UI elements.
Some of the textures and models also look like they need a little reworking, some textures are medium to high quality, while others appear pixelated, this could be a texture scaling issue, or a difference in texture qualities between assets. For the models, the characters and placeable objects appear to be reasonably high quality, while the platforms appear to be simpler.
Otherwise, it's a pretty good job, you have a 3D game played from perspective, sounds and music, a narrative to follow, and all within the jam. I am still yet to complete a 3D jam game because I worry about getting it done in time. So good job on getting as much together as you did.
