Really liked the gameplay mechanic on this one. Lost on lv 9, starting at 3 cubes the game become a really good puzzle game
Good job !
I managed to get through all the levels on my first try! I really appreciate that bit of health restoration at the start of each level, I wouldn't have made it otherwise.
The design is really clever, once the player is two (or three) blocks tall it takes good thinking to anticipate the correct moves to make. At one point I thought "I can just camp around the center and block the spheres as they come in, but found myself on the wrong side at the end and I couldn't figure out how to get over in time. :D
You mentioned in your youtube video about this that you intended for the level setup to be much faster than it is, but I honestly do like the speed of it currently. It reminds me of really old games which (probably) had to function that way, this for example takes nearly half a minute to set a simple scene. So if I didn't know otherwise I wouldn't have thought anything about the 'slow' setup. It also helps give the player time to familiarize themselves with the layout as it appears for those who are better at three dimensional thinking than I am.
And, to keep talking about the setup for a moment longer, I really like the way the blocks appear, both the cascade along the floor and the 'bounce' of the obstacle cubes. For a game which is comprised entirely of simple shapes it looks beautiful, especially with the neon glow.
I think it might be wise, in a finished version of this game, to introduce the larger shapes quicker. Perhaps sticking to one level as a single cube, just enough so that the player understands movement, then immediately go up to two cubes to demonstrate the main progressive mechanic. Since I knew that a three cube form was coming up, I kept anticipating it while playing as the two cube version. "Will it be this level? The next one?" Doing a little bit of an intro for the new shapes at the end of the previous level might be nice, to give the player something to look forward to going into the next one, unless the goal is to surprise them with their new shape once the level begins. :)
Unrelated to the game, thank you for all the videos you've been making about the jam! I only watched the first one so far, and I skipped some of that since there were games from people I recognized and wanted to go in 'fresh' when I play them myself. I'll definitely watch them all toward the end of the review period.
Thank you for all the great feedback, I have been making tons of notes and thoughts based on peoples comments and feedback. I will be progressing with it and try to make it in to a full published game. Really appreciate the feedback.
I absolutely loved your game, I couldnt stop playing it last night. Those are definitely my kind of games.
Great concept, like how it feels like a puzzle game while still being high tempo/engaging. I managed to get to level 9 and difficulty progression/level design felt good as well.
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for playing
Very fun little puzzle game. I kept at it until i clocked it and got past level 10. Nice graphics and theme, also the gameplay was very smooth. Well done!
Thanks for playing and beating it! I hope to expand on it after the jam
Fantastic - my favourite in this Jam. Nearly perfect score 5/5 for each.
Thanks so much, I will check yours out soon
Super fun and well made game. I finished it on my second try :)
nice congrats, thanks for playing
nice idea had a lot of fun playing it
Glad you liked it, I will try yours soon as well
Got to level 9 twice before dying XD, It's a very well designed game, the twist of adding the block's length quite surprised me to be honest (in a good way!), like oh man the game's harder because it's harder to move around now which I thought was pretty interesting.
Btw this could be a skill issue from me but I find that certain layouts are just waaay too hard to navigate through (using the 3-length blocks), some areas feel unreachable, especially with the faster spheres.
Overall it's a very solid jam entry, would love to see more player shapes!
I have watched a few people play it now and there are a lot of tricks i didnt even think of for the 3 block one that make it really easy, it gets tricky because you have to move to other areas to flip the block then come back to where the enemy is so yeah those get tough. I will be adding 2x2 player blocks and a C shape next so thats going to get pretty crazy. Thanks for trying and the feedback. I think I might add difficulty modes later to make it easier or harder depending what the player wants.
Playing this brought back memories of Cool Math Games playing Bloxorz. Really fun and interesting way to incorporate a theme.
glad you enjoyed it, thanks for playing
A great example of a game jam game. The shader and music go together for a great electronic feel. The mechanics were smooth. The actual game itself was great, too. It seems like it should be so easy for the/my brain to start seeing the pattern. My brain still struggled with actually anticipating enough to know when to turn/rotate the player piece. This is a lot of fun!.
Thanks, I still have trouble finding the patterns sometimes even so I know exactly what you mean.
This game is a great example of a simple concept that is immediately super engaging and well thought out / planned. I found myself getting a bit addicted to this one, and I like how each level gets just a bit more complex / difficult. Great job!!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed. I actually just played yours and found it got you hooked too.
This is really neat and engaging to play. I like the visuals you used here. I've tried coding a bloxors type movement with blocks, and it's no easy feat - lots of moving pivot points and math and collision checking. Well done on executing on that! I could see a few interesting mechanics like having some of the blocker blocks move around to occasionally cut the player off, or a speed bonus for setting up a combo of kills. Nice work with your submission.
Yeah it was pretty tricky to get working right without a ton of bugs in the movement. I plan to expand on it and add a bunch of different block formations for the player as well as obstacles. Thanks for playing and glad you enjoyed it.
This is so fun, super unique, really well designed and executed, killer job!!
Thanks a ton, glad you liked it. I really like your game too as I said in the video while playing it. Me and the wife are hot dog nuts and go all the time and were even considering getting a hot dog stand this summer so its right up our alley. I am going to show her your game later she will like it a lot.
At the beginning I was like why does the map matter if we can just wait next to the goal, then I got two cubes and everything changed.
Yeah I was trying to make it simpler like that for the first bit so its kind of a tutorial that you learn on your own without being too difficult and then it builds up, the single cube is a lot faster so that its easier to bounce around and win the level easy while getting the hang of the gameplay mechanics. Glad it worked out.
My Last Stand failed lol! Lvl 9 is my maximum. I like the idea, also it's cool that your cube becomes a cuboid, and it's changing gameplay. How many lvl did you got there?
Shit gets real once you're three blocks long. Amazing game, simple but well-conceived mechanic, looks great. Impressive work!
Thanks a lot, glad you liked it. I have tons of ideas I am going to be adding on to it.
Somebody played Blockorz and said "But how can I make this harder?"
Awesome job! The look and feel of this game felt very complete and polished. I could easily see this getting fleshed out some more with additional levels and features and becoming a full fledged game. This feels like something that once you get the movement mechanics down, it'd be mesmerizing to watch. Imagine the speedruns...
Awesome job overall! Absolutely knocked it out of the park!
Funny enough I never heard of Blockorz until after I started and someone on the discord showed me it but yeah very similar idea and now I love Blockorz. I have some ideas for more shapes and obstacles I will be adding soon. Thanks for playing and glad you liked it.
OMG Metalstorm, this is just extraordiary! Beautiful aesthetics, mechanic is simple but awesome, fun and challange factor is high (especially when the 3cube appeared), so far one of the best I've played!
Thank you so much, glad you liked it. I have lots of ideas to add soon too after the jam.
Awesome Game. It's fun and a nice game for breaks.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for playing
