couldnt play this on stream, because UE games kill my stream.

so i played offstream.

i like the typing as a mechanic. it links an actual skill to combat ability.

i noticed that i couldnt see what i neede d to type if i wasnt facing the enemy, so that's a thing.

but good job.

Developer

Ah, shame. Was looking forward to seeing it being played by an impartial judge. Never mind.

Thanks, for giving it a go and for the comment, I'm glad you got some fun out of it. The ability to turn during combat is in, but I'll be the first to admit that is isn't very intuitive! Thanks again :)

I really enjoyed how the typing premise permeated everything including the mundane actions from `PULL` to the menu `PLAY`. Great commitment to the theme. Also those puns were great. Sounds like you are already thinking about a difficulty slider, but would be curious how you decide to implement it (word difficulty versus words per minute). Really enjoyed the art and music too.

Thanks for the comment! We tried to strike a balance between consistency (typing as the main interaction with the world) and ease of use (you don't need to type walk or turn). Haha, puns are a blessing and a curse. Can't seem to help ourselves.

In terms of difficulty there was a few options we noted down. Word length and attack/defence timers were key ones, outside of enemy health and number of attacks. Early on we considered basing damage directly off how many letters were in the word you executed, even classes or weapons that specialised in different kinds of words! I think the place we landed feels good for the time we had, a mix of easy and harder words makes for a very RPG-like system where it feels like sometimes the enemy will land a critical hit, or the player may fumble etc. With more time I think it could get rather more nuanced...

Thanks again for giving it a go! :)

Looks and plays nice. One thing that I wish the game had is automatic turning towards the enemy when the encounter starts. I hope this game gets further development later down the road.

Developer

Thanks for giving it a spin. I think you're bang on with that one - even though it's possible to turn in combat (though we didn't give adequate explanation of this in game) it'd be so much smoother if the camera automatically turned. I think this hit the back burning initially because we envisioned combat scenarios where the player may want to turn and pull a lever to activate a trap, or alternate hitting different enemies. In the end, of course, this didn't go in and we are left with the rather clunky solution we see before us. Thanks for the comment :)

The combat system really appeals to me but that might be because I type for a living and easily breeze through all the enemies :D

Love the art style and sound design, cool premise. Great job!

Thanks for giving it a go. Yeah a friend of mine working in customer support was also very skilled as a result of his day job! In our original plans we had hoped to scale the complexity of the words against the enemies toughness, but in the end we didn't have time. Thanks again :)

I won't be able to play this game on my antique pc so I just want to say I'm at very least intringued, I generally like where typing systems lead to.

Developer

Thanks for leaving a comment anyway, glad to know the game can is capable of inducing intrigue! :)

I eventually found a pc where I could play the game. I really enjoyed it, the combat system does work, overall balance and length were on point to me, I liked that the game uses a food mechanics and I liked the dungeon, with a good layout and a cool puzzle (good partly due to the food pressure), any respectable dungeon needs a good puzzle.

When I run the game, I see only black and some untextured blocks and the typing stuff does not work most of the time. Was this updated after the deadline, because of some bugs?

Okay I looked at the filedates and the old version was from 5.4. and then I downloaded the working one, which is from 8.4.
Where did the old version com from, I am pretty sure, that I started downloading submissions after the jam.
Well, anyways...very nice game, cool idea, but I could do without the typing outside of combat.

Developer

Hi, thanks for giving it a try. Sorry for the confusion, we had issues with butler right as submissions were closing - leaving us with the finished version of the game locally while the page had a very old build. In a last ditch effort we removed the old version while we waited to see if we could get permission to submit post deadline, which was thankfully granted. Again, sorry for the confusion and thanks for the feedback!

This is my favorite gameplay mechanics I've seen so far in this jam, congratulations, I completly love the typing system!

It lacks of sounds effect (specially some keyboard sounds when we are typing would be really nice). And that's probably the only weakness of this game. To me, this is an excellent game, I hope more people will try it :)

Tanks so much! Yeah we actually had quite a number of SFX ready to go, but we went up to the wire in development and sadly just didn't get them implemented in time. Really glad you enjoyed it!

Fun little crawler with nice and responsive movement. I really enjoyed the typing mechanism, especially for combat. Well done :)

Developer

Glad you got some fun out of it, thanks again for the help fixing the game page!

Man, realizing that this is a typing game really brought a smile to my face. Great combat mechanic, thoroughly enjoyed it. Didn't figure out if there's a way to regain energy though? Always ended up eventually dying by "exhaustion".

Developer

So glad to read that you had a good time with it.

Yeah, if there was one thing we struggled to flesh out it was the game's legibility. A lot of the mechanics could do with better descriptions or a tutourial!

(By the way, you can loot bananas from enemies and hidden areas and eat them to restore energy)

Thanks for playing!

I liked the spelling tutor stile combat.

The one down side is if the monster attacks you from the side, you can't see what you need to type.

I also had a attendance to try hitting enter instead of space.  I don't know if others have had the same issue, but maybe have space and the enter key be the submit button?

Developer

Thanks :) Yeah, it is possible to press enter during combat which allows you to turn around - though this isn't made very clear I'll admit!

Thanks for giving it a try!
