What an great style and look to the game.
The art style really sticks out, but the music and effects all suit to.
Nice concept with the settings at the start to :)
the look of the Health "bar" is a great detail to :).

Perhaps a tad to difficult at the start, but it's probably just my being not to good at these games :P.

Great job! Well done!

Amazing submission! Honestly an unbelievable amount of polish and visual juice in this short amount of time; I've been trying to get this granular pixel-perfect look too, if it's possible, could I get some pointers on how you got this look? Is it designed specifically for 1920x1080p? Are there any specific pixel-perfect camera setups you use, like the Cinemachine one?

This is a nitpick, but I wish the mechanics were a little bit less dodge-spammy, and a tad more deliberate. I loved the game feel, but the combination of the smoke closing in and the player's bullets decelerating made it a bit stressful for me to try and hit the enemies. I think I sort of perceived the range of the player's attack to be quite limited, and then so I felt like I had to go up to the edge to try and hit them, which meant I was much closer to their attacks and felt like I didn't have ample time to deliberately dodge the attacks.

Also I loved the nameless/random upgrades. It's honestly refreshing to see upgrades just thrown at you, and honestly for the scope of a game jam game like this I think it actually really increases the replayability of the game because you want to know what else there is, and because you're guaranteed one after every couple levels, instead of having to spend time choosing, or reading lengthy descriptions. And also saves time implementing buying systems and shops and upgrade selecting systems and whatnot, I thought it was a pretty nice move.

Awesome awesome work, among the best submissions I've played yet. Congrats on putting out this cool project!

Developer

Thank you so much! I appreciate the feedback. The gun's range is def the biggest feedback I've gotten, so I'll be sure to fix that once the jam's over.

As for the pixel effect - I almost feel ashamdd to admit there is absolutely no code involved. I don't know if it's the same in Unity, but in Godot, there are three window-scaling options: disabled, 2d, and viewport. Disabled doesn't scale the game to the window, viewport scales what is seen to the window, and 2d scales the game itself to the window. So, if you have a reeeaaaalllllyyy small game resolution (for this game i think it was around 300x100?) and use viewport scaling, it'll scale the tiny screen to whatever the window's size is. If you download the game and play it, you'll notice that the game is really small. That's the actual resolution, and it's why I beg players to play the game in full screen lol.

Very enjoyable to play! I liked it a lot! The level looks a bit like my game. Congratulations on the submission and care with details.

Definitely the most impressive game I've played in this game-jam so far. The levels of polish are insane, the graphics are great, the theme is used well, the game is challenging but not impossible, just wow. Congratulations on this.

Developer

Thanks a ton!!! :)

Dang, I really wonder how some of you get so many ratings. But with that aside

I REALLY LOVED THE GAME.

it was cool.

IT WAS SUPER COOL.

I'Ll also always appreciate a nice tagline for a game

Submitted(+1)

I really liked the game, I loved the smoke effect limiting the game area, the commands flow very well and the game is super cool, congratulations.

Developer

Thanks man! I loved your game even more!! I know my game is getting a ton of reviews, so I'm just gonna hijack my own comments to say that you guys should try this guys game!!! It's hella fun!!!!

Submitted(+1)

I could obviously tell you that this game is incredible, like everybody else in the comments but you've already heard that. If you want to know my thoughts, just read all the other positive comments!

I am instead gonna tell you that I've managed to somehow bug out of bounds... I don't know exactly how it happened, but I was able to recreate it using a mix of dashing and geting hit at the same time.

Did I mention that this game is amazing?

Developer

OH MY GOD THANK YOU YOU JUST HELPED ME SOLVE THE BUG

WHEN THE PLAYER GETS HIT THE COLLISIONS ARE TEMPORARILY TURNED OFF, AND THE LOOPING IS BASED ON COLLISIONS. I CANT BELIEVE I HADNT SEEN THIS SOONER!!!

I'll try and remember to fix it once I get home! Unfortunately I can't actually update the game 'till the jam rating is over :(

Submitted(+1)

You're very welcome! The game is still absolutely incredible, so I hardly doubt that this will spoil anyone's expierience!

Submitted(+1)

Fun game! The art is very nice and the controls feel good!

Submitted(+1)

Do we have a jam winner here? Probably

The level of polish is just insane, especially considering the size of your team. The audio integration is very good too, with the menu theme and the different loops playing along the waves. The jungle like beat is catchy and the sfx are smooth. Overall I loved the audio aspect of the game.

The only downside I would see is the lack of content, it gets kinda stale after a while, but the base gameplay is really solid.

Submitted(+1)

This art style is really good! This is a really nice way of embracing the "Confined" theme of the jam haha, and the gameplay is also really fun, good job!

Submitted(+1)

This game is great, the art style is fantastic and the gameplay is fluid. It's simple, yet difficult and, the speed at which you can quickly get back into a new run really helps with the flow of the game as a whole!

The only thing I think could be improved is some kind of guide to help understand what the abilities do? I Ran into a few where it took me a little bit to figure out what they were actually adding to the gameplay, although that's mostly a minor issue. Overall, this is a great game and a great experience!

Developer(+1)

The upgrades are all listed in the game's description!

Submitted(+1)

ohhh okay! Thanks! I feel like an idiot now haha, I just immediately played the game xP sorry then, that works great!

Submitted(+1)

The art style is solid! And the amount of content with the power-ups is very cool! Awesome game Fartfish :D

Submitted(+1)

The cloud effects and the art is something else, huge props! The game oozes personality and charm and is fun to play! My only gripe is that I feel that if it started with a bigger safe area than the existing before starting to getting smaller, it would give me a better sense of progression and a better sense on grasping the difficulty curve. Regardless, this is one is one of the best games in this jam!

Submitted(+1)

A super fun game! I like how the hp bar and confine clouds are moving! Curious how did you achieve this! The only thing concerned me is the dash key, if it can be right mouse it would be easier for me to press it! But overall super like this game!

Developer

Thank you! I made the hp bar and cloud using particles. Hope this helped!

As for the dash key, it's fairly common, but you're def right that I should have had right click as an option.

Submitted(+2)

This game is very popular for good reason! The difficulty took some time to get used to but I quite enjoyed my time with it.

The good:

Generally high immersion. There is strong art direction with sound and art working cohesively well together. Your team is clearly very experienced and it shows in here.

Gameplay is simple and works fine with the theme. A constrained arena is okay on its own but I applaud the effort at making the unique 'screen-wrap' mechanic.

The game gets very hectic but once you've learned on spamming the dash mechanic (there's kinda no reason not to), it does get you on the edge of your seat and makes you wonder  'how am I still alive?'

To improve:

The only thing is probably the difficulty ramping.  I think there is a lot of subjectivity from what I am about to say.

The constrained arena feels very uncomfortable and way too claustrophic than I liked for the amount of bullets on the screen. This feeling lessens with time and experience. Hence, the difficulty ramping on the beginning part of the game should be tuned a little bit on the easier side so that players can ease into the game better.

Also honest question, how did you achieve the 'bubbly' effect of your health bar and the darkness. Is it through shaders? The art is great and would really love to know! Thanks in advance!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for the feedback! As for the difficulty scaling, yeah, that was my biggest worry. I playtest my games a BUNCH and that leads to me being really really good at them, but that also means I accidentally make them wayyy harder than they need to be.

As for the health bar and darkness - that's actually just particles! I made a circle sprite and used it as a texture, and set the scale curve so they scale in quickly and scale out slowly. I used the same particle material for both of them, except for the health bar I made the colors a little random!

Submitted(+1)

Very smart way of using particles! Thank you so much for your insight! It's such a cheap and easy way to add charm and aesthetic where possible.

It is very interesting and I love the art and music but maybe the bullet range is a bit in the shorter range and I somehow managed to clip out the darkness
