In what way does your game fit the theme?
Rewind as in back in time. you are playing retro.

Mechanic for the game requires you to restart if your power goes out, causing a rewind.

Did you write most of the code yourself and made all the assets from scratch?
Yes, only the sound is not made by me or my teamate. we used free assets for that, credited in the files.

I really like the atmosphere and the exploration. There was a lot of world building done through the signs that made me go 'how large is this, there is gonna be a lake?'. Power outage is a bit frustrating, but you learn the map quick enough. Just going around to the upper part of the hedge maze is a loooong walk. Side note: maybe don't put the turn off button on space, very easy to accidentally lose progress by unintentionally pressing it. But all in all well done, I hope you continue working on it.

Would appreciate if you could also check out my entry. It's only my second game ever, so any feedback is helpful.

Developer

I don't remember ever putting the power off button on space, maybe it was my partner on the project, it definitely shouldn't have been space. I was thinking about a way to make a power outage less frustrating if this was to be a full fledged game, check pointed setback was thought about but I didn't have time for anything else.

Amazing aesthetics. I love the graphics, audio and the feel of this game in general.

Developer

Thank you! really appreciate it.

Very interesting game! I love that you made the tutorial part of the environment of the scene. I always appreciate when what could have been a text popup be introduced naturally.

Developer

Thank you very much!

Good game, very fun!!

Absolutely loved the atmosphere of the game! Really wish there were more TV's sound effects, because that would add even more to the vibe of the game. Exploring the map was very enjoyable (and a little bit spooky) and the power out mechanics were clever, though became a little bit frustrating after several retries. Overall, nice game!

I really appreciate the feed back and playing past a power outage, it means a lot. I really wanted to add more sounds but this was my first time doing any sound in Unity so It took me a lot of time to get it just right, I did have more sounds ready to go but didn't have any time. As for the frustrating part, we were thinking of different ways to combat that since the reviews started, I'm thinking if there was more to collect having a checkpoint at a star and resetting more often back to the checkpoints would have been cool but that's just one option.

hmmm...Not sure what I was supposed to do. Yes, I followed the signes but other than mainly what felt like an empty game nothing was happening. Having said that, I did like the retro looking tv, effects, the shadow of the player in front of the tv, and the atmspheric sound effects all worked very well together. Just wish there was more to do at least right away.

Developer

One of the sticky notes says what the goal is, to collect 5 stars.  its more of an adventure game than an action game,  the signs were guides to stars. I did want to put more intractable stuff in but just didn't have that kind of time.

Can you tell me what to download to play?

Developer (1 edit)

You should be able to just download the Zip file PowerOut.rar unzip it and run the exe file from the build folder.

Really cool game! The simple art-style was perfect, and movement felt also very smooth. The map was also huge, which is good thing. Sometimes it was boring to wonder around and look for things, but when I got familiar with the map, it got a little easier (so maybe just stressful for beginners?). I also didn't hear any background music, just coin sounds and thunder sometimes. But a really nice game overall!

Developer(+1)

There is rain and wind sounds along with the hum of the TV , I wanted to get a volume knob on the TV also but I didnt have time for it. Thank you for the Critique!

Liked the art, gameplay and atmosphere a lot, it was a bit too quiet except the thunder every now and then. It's really impressive how large the world is considering you only had a week to make the game. The rewinding part is seen mostly in the theme as it's not a game mechanic. You have some really small and quickly fixable issues in the game such as the player not moving slower diagonally and the lines in sprites, in case you don't know how to fix it, you simply have to add your sprites or tilesheet into a sprite atlas with your preferred import settings and it's fixed.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the critique! I appreciate you letting me know the fix for that sprite stuff too , really cool. it was a bit time consuming to make it that big but I did get too ambitious for not being able to put in more intractable elements, along with balancing items so the world wouldn't get cluttered also. Thanks a bunch.

Nice retro graphics and atmosphere. Kept me on the edge while playing. Good job!

I was expecting a jump scare...but there isn't any, phew, lol.

The creepy atmosphere is really well done! I was very tense throughout the playthough. The map is really huge, although there isn't much to do (other than collecting coins & stars and reading signs). Graphics and sound is well done.

The rewind mechanic...honestly feels a bit shallow (it just kicks you back to the beginning of the game), but I can see potential in having like a "timed" saving mechanism combined with a changing map/situation.

All in all, good work on the game!

Developer

The rewind mechanic isn't really about just going back to the beginning again and restarting, it was more of an aesthetic choice running off old games that you cant save and if they turn off  had to start over. realistically I wanted the inner game to have more to interact with and to be able to learn from the playthroughs if you didn't get through on the first try but I didn't have time to make any more sadly.

The audio was really well executate great job for that  !

Developer

thank you!

Played through your game in this video here at 00:49:15.

Developer

Really appreciate the Critique,  We wanted to add more intractable to make things more fun and interest keeping just didn't have the time to get them in with bug testing and everything. I was thinking of a map like a pause button that would zoom out the map so you could see everything or some sort of not on the TV but I was too worried about clutter on the TV at that point and yet again time.

Also you have a great voice :)

Submitted(+1)

Amazing concept! I can see that you've focused a lot on the gameplay and the art of the game, but some music/melody-loop would've been nice.

Developer

Thank you! I was a bit worried about putting music in since I would have to find something free that fit perfect for aesthetics sake so for this Jam I left it out :)

Submitted(+1)

Cool concept and really nice artstyle.

My only sugestion would be to give a player some sort of way to not lose all the progress if the power goes out. I had 3 stars and they were pretty difficult to find and then power out. I didnt really want to play again from the very begining.

Play my game if you have the time.

I was thinking about making it so it was a random chance what got rolled back during an outage but I didn't have the time to impliment it like that, thank you for the critique!

Submitted(+1)

So much nostalgic vibes! I like how every sound of thunder raises the tension. Cool concept, great game!

Developer

thank you!

It was a very unique and fun aesthetic. But the game play does get a bit repetitive and boring after some time. If you added some interactive elements and some variety, it would be much better.

Could you please check my game too? It is not much good but I would really appreciate if you checked the game out.

Developer

Hey was just wondering what got repetitive when playing the game? With more time I could have made more intractable like NPCs and environmental stuff just out of scope for this.

Submitted

I know the concept you were going from but due the lack of NPCs or other intractable items, the game was getting boring as I was just wandering around aimlessly which was repetitive.

Developer

Did you read the signs at all? they should have game some direction .

Submitted(+1)

I must have missed the signs. I will see at it again. Thanks for clarifying it.

Submitted(+1)

I loved this, it was really cool!

Developer

Thank you!
