You did great job on designing this game, the mechanics feels different from any other platformers and it feels really special, the music and the graphics are great.

My only two comments would be that it is really hard and some times forces you to rage quit, the other thing is I don't feel the "Holes" theme at all in the game.

other than that great work!

Please try & rate our game it is also a platformer: https://itch.io/jam/brackeys-3/rate/574177

Ok so I have a lot to say about this game and I’m also going to offer up some unsolicited meta-feedback.

First off I think the game is very fun and I did beat it. I don’t agree with comments that there is a problem with the controls. The game is very challenging, but the controls are fair and once I got used to them I was actually very quick at navigating levels which gave me trouble before. The art is beautiful (though I do agree that the crystal itself doesn’t fit well with the art style, being much higher resolution) and the audio sounds great.

Excellent job on this game and I think if you can get it into the right hands (hardcore platformers), people could have a lot of fun with a game like this. Not being very into those games, I don’t know how original this idea is or if it’s similar to another style of platformer, but if you came up with this mechanic on your own, special kudos for that.

Here’s the unsolicited meta-feedback: Even though I don’t agree with a lot of the comments below, these people were trying to offer honest feedback and I’d recommend trying to take that with a little more grace in the future. Free feedback is always valuable, even if you don’t agree with it.

All that said, congratulations on a great game and good luck in the rest of the voting!

Here’s my game if you’d like to check it out.

First of all grats on beating the game, i'm glad you got into controls. Thank you for checking up on it.

I agree on graphics, character looks out of the picture. it's just my software of choice - dragonbones broke for some reason, so i had to use unity's animator and didn't had time to figure out how to pixelate animated character (probably with shader of some sorts), if i'll continue working on this project, that issue will be adressed for sure.

Now about meta-feedback,  Sorry but i don't agree. Just because it's feedback and free, it doesn't mean it's always right nor i need to accept it "with grace" no less, that's recipe to ruin any kind of personality your game has right there. I accepted every feedback that  i considered helpful, but i don't think you are right that i have to do that with all of feedback (Yours about how i deal with accepting feedback for example). All you can learn from some feedbacks is that some games aren't for some people, trying to dig deep into those kinds of feedbacks will make you mistakingly assume things and that's bad. So sometimes (most of the times) you have to accept feedback, but sometimes if feedback is wrong, you have to explain it to player, why it's wrong, where did they approached wrong and how to improve on that and there's high chance you can get secondary feedback from them which would be more valuable, that's what i think and yes - feedbacks absolutely can be wrong. Not all feedback is diamond in disguise same goes for games.

I think the art of this game is not bad, though the crystal doesn't fit the style well, its animation makes it feel alive.

But honestly, I don't really like the control.

Though you define it as a hardcore game, the unstable movement just makes it uncontrollable.

Sometimes you will slide a short distance, while sometimes you slide long.

And there were times that feels like the material on the character had been changed to 0 friction.

Yet, it's always good to try something different.

"Sometimes you will slide a short distance, while sometimes you slide long." - because all movement is working according to momentum - whereas without momentum character doesn't slide at all, you can build up it not only from last jump but from previous jumps aswell and solving of several puzzles heavily depend on that mechanic. Movements will work exactly how you want them to work as long as you keep that in mind and use throttle/acceleration accordingly to control momentum.  Although if you haven't figured out how it works by playing it yourself, this particular  game just might not be for you since i created it for very specific target audience in mind, afterall momentum based experimental style of movements are its core fun and figuring out it yourself is part of the experience, so if you didn't enjoyed that experience, that's okay, not every game is made for everyone. I also thought about adding tutorial but explaining every little detail about how the mechanic worked with tutorial would make all of the trial, error and discovery go away which i don't enjoy in such games. Movement is anything but uncontrollable, it's precision was one thing that was worked on with specific focus.

Wow, that's really detailed.

You're right, not all the games are for everyone. And clearly I just neglected the key word "momentum".

The crystal felt out-of-place art wise. it didn't feel like it matched the environment. The control is taken away from the player too drastically, for a jam it's works, not sure if this could work out post jam. The art in general felt imbalanced but good attempt! And in game tutorials are critical, specially for a game like yours, I feel reading tutorials elsewhere kills the game instantly for me, and when it's not in-game them well that's a big red flag for me! All the best!

Very unique and interesting tiny game.

Developer

Grats on completing it

The graphics are really cool. It would be cool if the character didnt glide after a jump, I'm struggling with the level where you have to climb 3-4 plaforms on the left of the screen. Nonetheless, good job.

Very nice graphics! The crystal's animations were good, brought a feeling of life to it.

The music was fine, but didn't really fit with the gameplay and jumping sound.

The controls took a while to get used to, particularly the sliding - at first I thought it was inconsistent until I realized it took momentum from earlier jumps (even beyond death), not just the latest one.

The level before the last one was a tough one! Took a few minutes to beat. The very last one was easy though, and I think it would have been better to place it earlier to teach the player how the jumping momentum works.

Good suggestion about level placement. Thank you!

The controls are a little bit fiddly at the beginning, but after you figure it out it's a really cool Game, I love the Portals they look really nice. Over all really cool game well done :D

I feel like the movement is janky and I never really understand why sometimes I slide and other times I don't. But the art is really nice and the level design is pretty good too so nice job on that! I'd appreciate it if you would check out my game too! :)

Developer

Controls are written on game page. You slide when you "Long/Momentum Slide: hold "A/D+Space"  and you stop when you "Throttle:  Press Opposite direction right before you land after the jump".

good game

Maybe the mouvments need some modification

Good job

It was quite short, but alright. Is it intentional that you cannot move to the sides unless you jump?

Developer

Yes, it is intentional. Reason is explained in lore section, on game page.

Submitted

Tutorial needed please i cant control the distance. the graphics are nice.

Developer (1 edit)

Control descriptions are on the game page.  You control distance with differentiating between long and short jumps, momentum slide and throttle.

really awesome control. Felt really nice to jump :D

Unique controls, very hard to get used to it. But I like the graphics and idea.

Submitted

I feel like this is a very interesting concept for a puzzle but I get frustrated so easily

Developer

I hear you, if it wasn't created by me and i didn't knew every little detail about everything, i would ragequit at level 4. :)

Great job on your game. Really good music. Though player movement is kinda hard to control. Well it was intentionally hard great job.

Congratulations on the amazing job! The controls feels so smooth, I love how you can  use the speed you achieved just before diying to start again the level with an extra boost, very original!

The visuals are amazing, extremely beautiful pixel art right there. Also, you did not only animated the blue cristal but also the background as well, awesome!

The audio fits very well within the game, and the main loop is outstanding, it gives an misterious but at the same time charming aura, I could listen to it for hours.

Thanks for releasing such a nice game, I hope you keep working on it to release more levels! You will do great in this jam :)

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thank you!

As for audio, glad you saw it that way. I wanted to create audio which would be charming and relaxing because game is so difficult and stressful itself it pushes you to ragequit, so music is there to balance out gameplay as much as possible.
