This feels like something that would be on a Markiplier video titled "3 sad games". Very well made, although the voice lines did glitch out a bit and showed the wrong name, and it got kind of repetitive with just a rook and pawn mechanic, but considering there were only 7 days to make it this is some amazing work. This is what games should do -- tell a story in a creative manner, and especially that ending along with the music. This would fit right in as a PSA for the suicide hotline or something! :)

This is really impressive solo work! The voice acting is crazy, the minimalst style and polish is insane, the small tape animation and everyting! Also going with a hevay emotional topic into a gamejam is really brave and you did an amazing job at getting this theme across in a sensitive and touching way!
I so wanted to enjoy this game. The serious, emotional topic. The puzzles. The amazing voice acting. And all that done in a week is just amazing. Thank you for tackling a serious topic.
- I did fine on the tutorials, then failed multiple times on the Golden Gate Bridge puzzle, and there is no feedback, so I don't know why I failed, I gave up.
- I could not read the instructions, because they are in a tiny font in gray on a gray background. Going fullscreen and with a lot of squinting I eventually figured it out. Consider using a black font and bigger type.
I loved the concept of this game, but could not find much enjoyment playing it.
Amazing experience and really impressive for a jam!
The quality is amazing, the game has a very professional feel. The clean design is very appropriate. The female voice acting is quite good.
I got stuck for a short time during the tutorial. I didn't realize that I was already in the game and where I needed to interact with the interface. Also, I tried to control it with the keyboard at first, only later did I realize that I had to click with the mouse.
Overall, this is an unusual and interesting concept, and it has the potential to leave a deep impression.
Outstanding performance!
Wow. What an experience. The story, the voice acting, the emotion in those lines. You've made something truly special here. I do agree a tiny bit with Len Underbrink below, where it may have felt just a tiny bit disconnected and a tiny bit rushed at the end, but it is a game jam after all. This game has had the biggest impact and has left the largest lasting impression on me of the 100+ that I have played so far. Nice job on this!
This is a really interesting entry. The story is captivating and the design and audio is amazingly underlining the experince you are conveying. Really polished aswell.
Just some things I would consider: On the one side, the core game mechanic felt disconnected to the story you were telling. It sometimes felt like the story told though the tapes (really breathtaking!) was something completely different to the game played. It would have been nice if you introduced more elements which are part of that story (e.g. other obstacles instead of just construction sides). You could also consider changing the chess theme to something more fitting.
On the other side I was quite shoked by the ending. It was really sad and cruel to me to introduce the suicide of the main character so suddenly. For me personally, it would have been much deeper if you told a story of the father processing his sorrow and emotions and finding back to something like "inner peace". This would especially fit your heard-warming words in the end.
All in all a really special experience and also a special entry for a game jam. Please keep up your work and only take those thoughts as inspiration for the next experience you create. Mindfully dealing with mental issues in games is a hard challenge! Glad you dared to take it.
Thanks for the thorough feedback! I really appreciate it :)
Agree with everything you've said. I guess I should've made the connection between the story and puzzle elements more clear. Basically I wanted to represent the different bucket list items as places and thought of a chessboard :)
As for the shocking ending, I'm glad that's how it got conveyed. I made this game for a friend who's recently committed suicide. There were no signs, nothing. This game was my way to cope with the shock, I guess.
Thanks for playing!!
There was no flaw at all.
Audio design, story writting felt too professional. Voice acting way too real, made me empathize with the characters and wondered that whether this story is real or not.
A memorable rollercoaster trip of emotion, with heavily educational purpose. Thank you!
Such a beautiful game. The voicelines hit you hard and the human element of rewinding the tape was not expected. Also the monologue during the start and end is a sweet gesture. I wish you make this into a full fledged game so that people who need it the most can discover it.
Please play and rate my game as well, thanks!
The storytelling is well written with really good voice acting. I absolutely love the visuals and the theme it portrays. Excellent game.
Really cool game! I love the visual style, the game looks incredibly polished. The voice acting is a super nice touch. I liked the story, it felt super heartfelt and I was invested in it. I like the puzzle mechanics, but I wish the puzzles were a bit harder and there were more of them. Overall really great work, an impressive submission!
Nice one! I prefer puzzle games to narrative experiences but the story still is impactful, even in a short time. Maybe the very beginning is a bit too slow to me, with a lot of splash screens, even before you know what the game is about.
I'm amazed it's a jam game! Well done!
I... don't know what to say... this is truly phenomenal. Well done.
The puzzles are not difficult at all, but that's not the point. The art style is simple and clear, and the story, well this is where the true beauty of this game lies. Through beautifully done voice acting and the heartbreaking story, this truly is a one-of-a-kind experience in this jam. Hands down one of the best if you ask me.
For some feedback, I'd say the game is a bit on the shorter side (which don't get me wrong it's just one week so I am not complaining) but I still want more. The story feels like it's ending quite abruptly, and feels like there are loads more to be done, but it's already great as it is. There are also minor issues here and there such as some captions out of sync, puzzle levels don't really match the story at that point, claimed to be keyboard controlled but was mouse instead, etc.
But I will happily overlook these and say this is definitely one of my favourite games this jam hands down. Well done!
Absolutely breathtaking game! Love the art, music, narration. Gameplay was only 90% clear to me, the rest i reached by luck i think 😀, but that is not really main point of the game, the story and overall message is. So far i think the best game i personally played in the jam!
Man.. as a father of two girls I couldnt imagine. This story is heartbreaking but I think thats a compliment to your writing and design. Amazing entry. Easily a 5 stars for me. I'd give it 6 if I could.. well done
Absolutely heartbreaking story. Well polished and the voice acting was great. One of my favorites of the jam so far!
Very touching and well made, the clean style really fits with the gameplay and the oerarching story with the tapes add so much impact
Very touching and simple but clean looking graphics. Overall really well executed!
