What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
The coffee shop background and the font. Everything else was made for the jam.

Fascinating take on gamifying dialogue and the inner conflict often involved! Love to see another fellow dev tackle the topic and in a novel way!

Love the mechanic, it's so unique!

Great idea! The minigame illustrates well the difficulty to choose :)

The mechanic is so cool and unique. The writing is great as well.

Keep it up!

This one is very unique. I've played a lot of games, and that might be the one I was most captivated with the dialogue. I think it brings a very innovative mechanic for a dialogue choice system. The music with the art style matches perfectly too. I really like this game, a gem!

Original idea. Congratulations. I would also like to share a bug i experienced. I always see another question after she leaves, like the game is continuing. By the way, is there really an ending, I've failed enough times and still got no good ending...

Developer

Thanks. Sorry for the bug you encountered, that is something I know I need to fix but I ran out of time. We were not able to finish the endings properly. There is no “good” ending and we had planned for a better “bad” ending, both with proper “cutscenes”.

Very cool idea and I really like how the minigame works. Great dialogue too and the style of the game is very fitting! Great job!

Very innovative. I've actually never seen this before and I think it's a great idea. :)

I love it. Great tutorial, great gameplay. My date went badly, but I don't mind. It was still fun.

Very stylish and innovative. Well done.

I love this game! The dialogue-choosing minigame is so clever and original! I really like the concept, it fits the theme really well. The writing is really good as well! Each personality trait feels authentic and like something you'd hear a person say. Also the art is absolutely gorgeous! Overall a very fun and unique game. Good job!

This kind of gameplay is so much different from another dating simulation. It's unique excitement and skill required. Music and visual art are blended together very well. Nice work.

This was such an original idea on the concept of dialogue choice!! I loved it. The ocnversation options could be polished more tho (sometimes I didnt like any of them) but beside that, I was having fun! great submission and good luck!

I love the game mechanic, reminds me of undertale <3

Definitely an inspiration :) We wanted to have little variations in the minigame like there, but we ran out of time, Maybe after the jam.

Cool game, I like the choice mechanic! I always hit the choice I wanted...  which was always the wrong one :(

Developer

When one is nervous any thing you say may be wrong 😬 Spoilers: In the game, there is always a chance to “recover” after each mistake if you select the white choice.

Submitted

Wait, do the colours mean anything?

Developer (1 edit)

Yeah, we tried. Each is associated with a “trait”. Maybe I’ll add to the game page as a spoiler… (the list below applies to the conversation, not the introductory cutscene)

  • Red: self-centered vain
  • Teal: self-conscious timid
  • Blue: too-honest apathic
  • Yellow: nervous jokester
  • Purple: fake people-pleaser
  • White: recovery from the last intrusive thought

Wow. I think displaying that makes it a lot better. Even though its good to leave the choice up to the player, this gives them a little more guidance and makes the game a bit clearer.

The most practical game I've played this jam. The this game deserves awards. Everytime I want to choose something it gets the other one which totally ruins the date.🤣 I really liked this game, it is one best ones I played in the jam. Your game's writing is excellent. How did manage to do the branching thing in the dialogue system, or which one did you use for the dialogues?? This was finely structured.🙌- check my entry if you can.

Developer

I think you may have misplaced this review.

Submitted

oh sorry about that. Been playing so many game nowadays, I got confused.🥲

Developer (1 edit)

No worries. Answering to your updated review: The dialogue system was written from scratch for this project. I usually try to open source my projects once the jam is over when I have time to clean up the code. In this case there is just a big spreadsheet with the dialogue for each “scene” and a prefix-tree is used to select the branches (rows in the spreadsheet) based on the current interactions. After the scene is over we record the “traits” and I planned to use them for later dialogue but currently they only add “obstacles” to the mini game.

so glad I'm not on a real date because this date is hard to please! loved the game idea, design and the tutorial. Art was really well polished as well :)

Very great game design and idea. Would love to see more to story or choices. Keep up after the jam if you can. Great work!

Masterpiece, it is always fun to play real life situations at the comfort of my pc

Cool idea and great drawings!

Very fun and nice mechanic! Had a lot of fun playing it.

Even tho after I while you knew which answers to take and then aim for the white ones. For some reason the Game seemed to never really stop? Then When I failed, she quit the date but then another round of "combat" startet and then the game restarted. That was my only bug.

Very cool game! I bet you could build a full game with that :)

Developer (1 edit)

Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, we couldn’t really implement the “ending”. We planned a “good” ending and a “bad” ending but now the scenarios just loop getting faster and faster until the losing condition is met. Interesting about the “combat” (we call it “decision making”) before the game restarting though.

If any writer reads this and would like to come onboard to continue the game after the jam, ping me! We have some ideas about endings and adding a few other characters and situations.

Submitted

Okay, I was wondering if you can actually "win" the date. Sad that you can't, but it's a gamejam after all.

Sounds pretty good :)

Well I consider myself a writer, sometimes, I definitely could contribute something :)

Developer(+1)

Not at the moment, we ran out of time for the art and to finetune the scenarios and win condition. Ping me on discord @josepvalls and we can chat some time after the jam.
