How does the game fit the theme?
It fits because EVERYTHING can and will go wrong! Took the theme in the complete opposite direction of the literal meaning of the phrase.

What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
I did not make the sounds from scratch, but the sprites, code, etc are all made by me. The sounds are all courtesy of Kenney's.

How many people worked on the game?

Holy crap, I got average. That's way better than I could have hoped for my first jam. <3

Fun game, i like how all the pattern work !

Submitted(+1)

It's a cool concept! Too hard tho. The enemies have too much HP.  Also the sound effects are too much.

Keep it up!

Game was quite tough due to the insane amount of projectiles and no real way to avoid them, but besides that it wasnt too bad1 Only the known audio issues, but everything else felt decent to control, wouldve loved to see wasd movement too instead of only arrows :>

Submitted(+1)

Nice game, but very difficult ^^

Submitted(+1)

This was a hard game to play but overall a good job. Congrats.

Submitted(+1)

Love your take on the theme!

Submitted(+1)

Really hard game! I'm not sure if the idea is to simply evade or to destroy ships, since the gun is extremely weak and the bombs too. I appreciate the random breakdown events, but rounds are too difficult to get more than 1 or 2.

Though, with toned down difficulty, I'm pretty sure it'd be a much better experience.

Developer(+1)

It is! And I am planning on toning the difficulty down after the jam is over. I'm about to check your game out too!

Submitted(+1)

Thank you! Beware that it's also pretty hard :_D

Submitted(+1)

The difficulty is insanely high. But a good use of the theme however. Everything basically went wrong the moment you click play.

Submitted(+1)

The difficulty is high on this.

And I honestly thought powerups not working was a bug until I read the description.

I personally felt this is a good opportunity to inject humor into the game. Like the game is aware that things aren't working and shows texts or dialogues based on that.

Developer

That was in the plan but I ran out of time. Oops! Thank you for playing! <3

This game is tough, I barely got over 30 seconds, but It was fun while I kept up with it.
I liked the visuals, but I wish there was a background to color the screen a little.
Also, I feel like the player could stand out a bit more. I lot track of it a few times.

Submitted(+1)

Fun but difficult game. I don't think I survived more than a minute.

I really really liked how you had a toggle to turn fullscreen. How did you do that

I found the music a bit too high at times, especially when dying or being bombarded continuously. But it's a minor thing that could be fixed easily.

Good game and good luck!

Developer(+1)

Here's the code I used for the fullscreen toggle. I hope it helps!

func _on_fullscreen_toggled(toggled_on: bool) -> void:
    if toggled_on:
        DisplayServer.window_set_mode(DisplayServer.WINDOW_MODE_FULLSCREEN)
    else:
        DisplayServer.window_set_mode(DisplayServer.WINDOW_MODE_WINDOWED)

Sorry about the audio, I'm aware of the issues thanks to other comments, but I'm planning on fixing it after the jam. Thank you for playing! <3

Nice work! I like how you changed up a few of the genre staples and added things like the gun jamming. Visual overload is real though! Everything did, in fact, go wrong. 😅

Submitted(+1)

Fun game had to keep moving quick cause stuff came at you kinda fast. I feel like you have a good base and should keep working on it but i do enjoy a good run spray and pray game haha

Submitted(+1)

It's a really nice idea with how your gun jams, dud bombs, and power-ups just not working sometimes which adds a bit more of an internal or mechanical struggle then just your enemies. I think the visuals are solid and it's very on theme.

While the game is quite challenging, which I like, it feels pretty unfair a lot of the times. Either lessening the repercussions like adding more health/shield or making it easier to avoid enemies and bullets could help a lot with this. Another thing to consider would be adding or variety which could be with more and unique enemy types, different types of obstacles, or different powerups. A thing that would work really well is a score counter for every enemy you kill or a timer for how long you last.

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you for your feedback!

I wanted to balance out the fairness and add a timer, but I ran out of time. I'll give your game a try too!

Wait I tried your game and it was fun! I thought your username looked familiar!

Submitted(+1)

I like it, it's a bit difficult for me but I enjoyed it 🌸

Submitted(+1)

The game was definitely challenging, but that is not a bad thing. Hard games can be great, and there are entire genres dedicated to being extremely difficult. The problem is when a game feels unfair. This game was fun, but I found myself dying so quickly for reasons that seemed unfair, which made it hard to fully appreciate. Dodging bullets felt great, but sometimes it just was not possible. I would suggest adding a viable way to heal, like regaining health when an enemy dies. That could make the game even more frantic and chaotic in a good way.

I really liked the gun jamming mechanic. It was a clever way to discourage constant shooting, but unfortunately, it did not completely work since holding down the fire button still seemed like the best option. Maybe make it so the player cannot move while the gun is jammed to encourage more strategic play.

I also liked the unique visual style, but the sounds felt a bit repetitive. A small trick that can make them feel much more natural is slightly altering the pitch every time a sound plays. That would make the audio much better. As a small addition to this feedback, adding a little screen shake when the player dies could make the impact feel much stronger.

Overall, great job!

Developer(+1)

That's so strange! The game's already programmed so that you can't move when the gun is jammed and the screen is supposed to shake extra hard when the player dies. For the movement, the player loses control but they don't lose momentum immediately so they should drift slightly. As for the screen shake, I'm not sure why that's not working at all. Maybe the web player? I just ask because I had no problems running your game at all in my browser. I'm using Chrome.

I definitely agree with you about the audio, it needs some serious retooling. Being slightly hard of hearing it's easy for me to forget these things, so the input is hugely appreciated!

About the difficulty, I'm going to attribute that mostly to developer blindless lol. I did intend for it to be difficult, but I didn't mean for it to be as hard as many commenters are saying. I'm planning to work on this game more after the jam and add things like a difficulty selection or gradually making the game more difficult. It was just hard for me to figure out how to do that and with limited time I just kinda... threw some levels together before the deadline.

Thank you so much for the feedback, it's very helpful!

Submitted(+1)

There is nothing wrong with a game being hard. Foddian games are still popular despite their difficulty. The important thing is that the challenge feels fair.

Submitted(+1)

Love the take on the theme, but the game is a tad difficult for me, specially considering my up arrow key doesn't work so I don't have that movement available, but that's a problem from my end but I'd love for either keybinding remapping or an alternative control setup with WASD, but it's reasonable you didn't have the time to add an alternative control setup, that's ok. Besides that I found that SFX breaks eventually when the rounds become very chaotic, and I also think the game needs some more audio feedback, it feels like the music overshadows the SFX.

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for the feedback! I'm a little hard of hearing so the audio feedback is invaluable. <3

Fun fact, I originally planned for WASD and gamepad support but just ran out of time. Sorry about that! You also aren't the only person complaining about the difficulty, so I'm planning on adding different difficulty levels and more gradual difficulty in the future.

Thank you so much for playing!

Submitted(+1)

Loved the unique take on the theme! I do agree that it is possibly a bit too chaotic, haha. I wouldn't say the game is hard - it's just the jam mechanics that make it feel a little unfair sometimes (though I guess that's the point, haha).

Another thing I felt was really missing was a sound effect for shooting! We really grew to expect those at this point, haha

But regardless - awesome work for just one person on such a short amount of time!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! I completely spaced out (no pun intended) on adding the shooting sound effect! It was always in the plan but it must have just fallen through the cracks. I'll be sure to add it after the jam. Thank you for playing!

Submitted(+1)

My gun was jam so much. This game is challenging and difficult at same time. I like it. No pain no gain.

Developer(+1)

I'm glad you like it! I'm a fan of hard games too, so I'm glad. I'm planning on making different difficulty levels or gradually making the game more difficult after the jam instead of starting at "AHHHHHHH" lol
