How does the game fit the theme?
I took the theme as a challenge, or perhaps.. a threat?

Can't Lose is a minimalist puzzle platformer where the game really wants you to win, so the question is, how can you lose?

If you get stuck on a level the name is usually a bit of a clue, if you're still stuck you can always press esc to return to the menu and use the level select to skip

Also, just out of curiosity, leave a comment if you complete the last level, i'm a little worried its a bit tricky to work out

*** Thank you to everyone who's played so far, and thank you for all the feedback! I won't update the game during the Jam, but i am working on improving the feel of the game right now, and have a fair few new level ideas i would like to try out after the Jams finished***

What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
Music from https://www.fesliyanstudios.com/
sound effects from https://archive.org/

How many people worked on the game?

Very nice game. I couldn't figure out level 15--I checked all the spikes but they all retract so idk what im supposed to do. Another hidden block or something?

Edit: I guess that was the last level? Being trolled to the end I see

Developer

no there is a solution to the level, its not a troll i promise!

The level names are usually a clue, so, have you checked the intructions?

Submitted

Hmm. I don't know which instructions I'm supposed to check. I guess some people figured it out though

I did it

Such great and unique ideas came from this decievingly simple concept! I love it! The game was very clever, and I love how each level still felt fresh, and it never felt like you were repeating the same thing over and over again! Overall, a great, interesting little puzzle-platformer. Awesome job (also, 186 ratings??? That's crazy)!

Such interesting and minimalistic! I completed all the levels in a greedy manner, great job!

Very fun idea! If you could have heard me laugh, I laughed so hard every time the flag suddenly appeared and made me win XD

But there are minor problem - controls a little bit unresponsive, that makes game a little bit hard, but that's a small thing. Very good job!

We would be very happy if you also checked out our game.

This is very nice! It makes me long for that wonderful flash game era, a long-gone era of innovative indie games. This is an insanely fun game with each perfectly crafted gimmick for each level, and I am having so much fun playing this. I especially like level 14, which I think is what such a game should look like. Brillant!

For a minor issue, I'd say the platforming controls are a little bit off, and it's easy to get an intending wall jump when constantly pushing yourself against the wall. This entirely breaks all levels before the large flag where you can just wall jump to a save corner. I ended up replaying the game once I noticed it should be a bug. Another criticism is that some of the levels rely on popular culture references that might or might not resonate with the player. Not every player played Far Cry and not every player watched Squid Game. The level is still playable, just the joke/hint might get lost because of that.

Anway with all that's said, this is still a wonderful game and I really liked this a lot. Well done!

Thanks for playing and for the feedback :) Definitely agree about the controls, this was my first ever jam, first 'proper' attempt at game deving, and my first attempt at making a platformer, i kind of rushed the controls and didn't really realise how much went into making a platformer feel 'good'. I've carried on learning and am working on a post jam edition with much much better controls (plus some slight visual improvements and a few new levels).

Also, it took me ages to realise what you meant by a far cry reference lol, that phrase is much much older than that game lol

One of the best games I've played so far.  Incredibly clever.  S Tier.

This is brilliant.

I was not playing the game - the game was playing me. And I loved it! :-)

Wow, absolutely amazing! Such a well done game. Level design is simple and fun, pacing for introducing new features and puzzles is really smooth. Music and sounds fit well with the minimal aesthetic.

A bit more responsive controls for the character movement might improve the feel a bit, but the levels are so well done its really enjoyable regardless!

Great work!

I'm impressed by the level design: I thought it would quickly get easy, but it kept surprising me level after level. Great work, many congrats!!

Game is really interesting and fun, I feel this one could have easily become an extremely frustrating game but it's actually really enjoyable, I also love that the title most of the time tells you exactly what you need to do, I loved the check the instructions one, that was pretty clever.

I think this game nails every aspect, but my main critique is that the movement feels like you are on ice and the jumps at times are really hard to predict where you are landing, but maybe that was part of the design choice.

Really enjoyed this, thought it nailed the theme perfectly and I love its simplicity.

The levels were insane, I enjoyed the game!

The music is very charming. I enjoyed the game a lot gave me reminders of some of the rage bait games. the movement definitely could benefit for a bit more playtesting and tweaking, but I did not find it frustrating.

The theme is hit on point and jokes are on point aswell. One downside is the player movement. Especially in such a game where fast reactions are important the movement needs to feel responsive and snappy to me.

Awesome game! The puzzles were really clever, I especially liked the "Read the Instructions" level. The music was also really cool!

It has a very addictive gameplay, I'm surprise that how much I want to lose haha :))

Nice puzzles! Well done!

Cool game, I really like the puzzle design on most of the levels but I think it is sometimes ruined by unnecessary rage platformer elements (which is fine if that's what you were going for but I just feel you're devaluing your own product as you're clearly a talented puzzle designer). My other feedback would be to make sure sprites aren't blurry.  Fun game either way and definitely made me laugh!

Developer

Thanks for playing and thanks for the feedback :)

I think i kind of started out building a rage platformer and sort of backed into making a puzzle game lol,but yeah i definitely agree! I'm working on a "post-jam" release version of the game now with improved movement, better visuals and some new more puzzle-y levels and am considering dropping some of the original ones. Were there any levels in particular you thought didn't fit the game? (the main one i'm thinking of getting rid of at the moment is high dive)

Submitted(+1)

Yeah you've definitely managed to make a fun rage/puzzle platformer!

I think the only level that didn't fit was level 10 as you mentioned, as there isn't really any puzzle elements but I can see this as more of a rage level. The final jump being precise is cool but I think the character controller isn't quite responsive enough and coupled with the spike moving it feels more like a leap of faith, which seems slightly unfair to the player and not that rewarding.

Level 12 introduces a really cool concept and shows it off in a really fun way, I just wish  it didn't have the random flags popping out as I feel they only serve to annoy on a level that is otherwise very well thought out and requires puzzle solving from the player (it's annoying when you are trying to figure out a puzzle and then suddenly die through no fault of your own is what I'm getting at!).

That being said the way you teach new mechanics and test what the player thinks they know by flipping stuff on its head (this is most present in the first 6 or so levels) is really good, and there was a lot of "gotcha" moments that were done amazingly!
