The gameplay loop is simple but it's very fun and everything has such an insane level of quality. I'd write a proper review but honestly this is in a league of its own. Not to talk about the absolutely beautiful documentation and devlog in the description~

I think this is my #1 game from this jam

One thing that spoils the fun tho is the screen resolution, fullscreen or not it doesn't show the whole game (good thing a download is available)

A really excellent arcade action game with an unbelievable amount of style and polish for a game jam submission. My eyes were starting to hurt by the end, but I powered through for Aria's sake!

What a cool, fun idea. I feel like there must be dozens of artistic tools and concepts that can be turned into gimmicks for new abilities or enemies. I can envision a whole roster of characters coming to life as you work your way through their files and fend off the encroaching void, perhaps even with a Beat Hazard-style musical vibe. I hope you're super proud of this, and I would love to see more!

Thanks so much for your feedback! Yeah we had a ton of ideas in mind for how to expand on this. I actually just added a pretty substantial update to the post mortem on the game page if you want to see some behind the scenes details and ideas that got cut to save time. Hoping to do a final post-jam game update with some minor things we would've liked to include too. Thanks for playing!

zzablo did a final bit of artwork of Aria too, we really like how her design turned out :D

Masterfully designed. Out of all submissions I've played so far, I spent the most time on this one. Despite being made in 10 days, this game has so much in it, and every feature/mechanic/asset adds to the experience. I personally think the difficulty was on point as long as you tried to understand what the level expects you to do. Feels very polished, animations and effects feel satisfying. What a great game!

Developer

I really loved your entry as well! I thought the concept was very clever, and the visuals were so, so charming. Had a great time!

A really polished experience! Love how much y’all stuck to the UI aesthetic. I especially appreciate the slow enemy mode for accessibility. Great job, hope this goes far!

I see where you are going with this, afraid my wrist does not support this type of input 😅. Great idea tho!

Fun and challenging! This is probably the most unique game I've played in this game jam, amazing!

Submitted(+1)

What an incredible concept and fantastic execution as well! The music really fits well; it’s perfect for the game, and the color pops and pops sound as well when you sweep through the enemies, which is very satisfying. Amazing visuals, amazing sounds, amazing game—good job! :D

What a great concept! I really liked the art and music in this one and it really felt very satisfying to play. I loved the pop of colors as enemies were destroyed. I couldn't get very far because it was quite difficult to accurately sweep through the enemies with the mouse. Still, it was a lot of fun!

Wow! One of the best I've played so far! The only thing keeping me from a perfect score on this one is the difficulty. Goodness, even with the slower enemy setting on I barely scrapped through. Perhaps there is less of a mouse lag if it's not in the browser, maybe that's a factor, but it is extremely difficult pretty much immediately, which could push some more casual players away from the very unique experience.

Bonus: It is pretty neat to be able to play this using a Wacom tablet, or a similar tool. That is how I started out since I saw it was a Paint layout!

Developer

Thanks so much! I just uploaded a full playthrough of it being played on the itch.io page in-browser. Does this look like a similar cursor speed to what you were experiencing? It's my first time using a WebGL build so there's a good chance it might not be working as well on some browsers/PCs. Thanks again for giving it a shot and providing feedback!

Submitted

It does seem visually to be dragging a bit behind the cursor, though I'm unsure by watching the video how it felt while playing. I will say I did get more proficient with time, and I love a game with a difficulty curve, don't get me wrong. I did finish the game with perseverance. My hope is merely that any difficulty your players face is the difficulty that was intended, if that makes sense.

If I didn't mention before, the soundtrack was also awesome btw.

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for having a look! There is definitely intended to be a smoothing effect to the cursor speed that behaves a bit like a stroke stabilizer / lazy mouse. I wanted it to even the playing field a bit for players with vastly different mouse DPIs and also so the colliders could keep up :D

I've actually had it confirmed by someone else that their cursor was lagging significantly more, and increasingly so. So there's definitely a bug for some people. I've been working on an alternative movement system but its a bit late now!

ty! I listened to pages and pages of different tracks while I was coding trying to find some good fits. I wish I'd had time to do some fading/cross fading too. Sometimes the transition is a bit jarring atm!

Wow, this was a lot of fun to play!

It's super satisfying how the enemies are destroyed.

Waifu maker in Unity 2023 I love this!!! GOTY 10/10

That got intense fast!!! Great game. Really impressive game to be made in such a short time and only by 2 people!

I really like this game. Very good visuals and music and it makes fun with this mecahnic to kill the enemies.

The visuals on this game are amazing and I love that you actually did a post mortem! Very fun to see what went well, what was planned and what got scrapped. I might have to steal that idea for future jams :P

One thing you are correct about is that the difficulty is all over the place. I died hard to the very fast moving enemies and having them stuck on your "heart" while still doing damage was very frustrating because you are then in scramble mode to save whatever is left to save and you don't have time anymore to whatever is incoming (aka just drawing circles over your heart in a frantic way :P)
Maybe it would be better if the enemies despawned after some time on the heart (maybe even doing some extra damage on despawn). That way you could actually focus on the incoming enemies better instead of getting stuck in the frantic saving mode.

Zapping multiple enemies was super satisfying and if you want to have a scoring mechanic in the game, that would be a great way to award some multiplier/bonus points for zapping a lot of enemies in quick succession.

Overall: Amazing game that I am very jealous of, great job !

Developer

I'm glad you liked the post mortem! I did something similar for a previous jam as there was just so much content that didn't make it in haha. But I enjoyed the process of laying it all out and thinking through it even just for myself. And please do, I'd love to see more behind the scenes details with people's projects!

Scramble mode is very much what I was trying to limit people feeling a need for. There are definitely a few segments where it is unavoidable, but it's definitely easy for things to escalate out of control at any moment. Your idea of having the enemies stuck on her only last for a few pulses would definitely help that.

I did think about a few ideas for scoring. The final screen's comments/likes are actually a tally of all the enemy kills.. Which I realized is totally pointless as you have to defeat them all, so everyone's score would be the same :D. Retweets is how much damage you took, which makes even less sense. I definitely wanted to do something more interesting with the scoring and tie the Brush Combo size multiplier into it, since it already acts as a combo timer. But yeah, pushed that out of scope veeery early on. Definitely something that would improve the game though!

Thank you so much for your feedback, I'll definitely keep it in mind if I update the game after the jam! And thank you for playing :D

Great job, It is definitively awesome. I have to switch to "slow enemy mode" to complete the game. I love it

Gorgeous art, lovely story, fitting music + Sound effects and an unique gampelay! You hit all the checkboxes and even more, congratulations ! I had a really good time playing this game \(。◕‿‿◕。)/

Wow I'm really amazed with this game, so unique 🤩.

Is impressive the great level of care and detail. Overall all style, mechanic, progression, music, sounds and effects connect nicely. And the story is so exceptional, that it keeps your attention and want to continue playing to see how it ends.

I also quite appreciated the "slow enemy" mode, thanks to it I was able to reach the end. Amazing job 🙌

Developer

Thanks for the feedback and trying out the game! I'm glad to hear the slow enemy mode has been helpful for people. I finally tried it out with a drawing tablet (which I'm much less comfortable with) and slow enemy mode was definitely my pace for that!

This game is really amazing, it's a shame that only 27 people rated this game. I can see that there is a LOT of work behind this game. This could be an easy game to export to mobile for younger generations to play! This game is huge! I hope that at least they mention this game during the "Best Games of the Jam Review".

Amazing game and really unique concept! The level of polish was incredible as well, it felt like playing a demo from a commercial game. It was challenging but I managed to finish it :D
