How does your game fit the theme?
The game has 3 endings that require certain conditions. The "second" ending requires the player to beat the 'final' boss in order to follow her and escape the simulation.

The "first" ending is another that the player achieve by simply continuing on with the story and the third requires 8 Keys to unlock a gate (which is actually a secret ending).

This fits the theme of "An End is a New Beginning" because the player is required to play smart and every time they die a they get a chance to get to the secret ending. So every single player will have a different ending no matter how good or bad.

Did you write all the code and made all the assets from scratch?
I did not create the sprites and some of the music for this game. I created the story, UI, and of course code for it.

The first thing I saw. The UI colors are bad... It doesn't work with itself (red, green, yellow). BUT the gameplay was cool and it felt realy rewarding to beat the Punk Dude to the ground. Interesting way of discouraging spamming.

Oh bro don't I know it. I pretty much suck at UI/UX and had to work with what I had. So far it wasn't as bad as I thought it was as the the red and yellow complimented the main character and some of the enemies. BUT as I said earlier, not too good with UI/UX, but what I'm so freaking good at is "Game Design" so I put all my juice into making a good fighting mechanic and made sure to keep the player engaged and interested.

As for the gameplay I'm the kind of gamer that despises button mashing, to me it feels like it takes no skill so I decided to make a new way to play a beat 'em up fighting game where you have to be more calculated and plan your attacks against enemies with different stats.

Been meaning to play this one for a while, but couldn't get it to work on my browser (Safari), working in Google Chrome though. Good choice of Sprites and music! I imagine this was quite tricky to code and animate. This obviously takes me back to games like Streets of Rage and Final fight, even TMNT. I suppose you could introduce weapons, and maybe mini smash-up-a-car levels (See image) to break up the levels. And, if you really wanted to go crazy, vehicles, like motorbikes and skateboards. I would like to try making a fighting game at some point, so would be interested in knowing more about the coding challenges on this type of game.

I mean it really didn't take much to code the fight mechanic, and as for the sprites and animations I happen to have made a few animations in the game although most of them were downloaded from "anizmuz" an itch content creator. I agree that i should have added more features but I was at a cost of being disqualified from the jam, so I had to KISS and chop off the ideas that were good but not necessary.

Don't be disheartened, I'm making a prequal to the game but you play as on of the bosses "PonyTail", and understand her Origin story. It should be playable after the rating phase of the jam.

Hi Zenith Games, I think it is great! I was asking questions coz I'm trying to learn as much as I can from this jam. Good games are the ones that fire your imagination and make you think of all the other things that exist in the world they create, and this one flooded my mind with ideas :-)

You have no idea how good it feels to hear that. I've always been the kind who tends to over scope and thus never been able to finish games, which is the major reason I don't participate in game jams. But for this I had a goal, not to win, not to be among the top 30, not to get the highest ratings, but to "finish" my game and so I did. With this thought I was able to finish the game a day early and began polishing.

What's great about this is that 88% if the ideas I had were able to be implemented into the game and that's a lot if you ask me, so seeing someone play my game and say they're inspired and filled with so much ideas really brings a tear to my eye.

Nice game! I'm usually not the biggest fan of the retro style, but I really liked this one; visuals, audio, lighting, UI - all fits quite well together and create a really cool atmosphere. Combat feels good and there's quite a bit of content for a jam game (including the 4 difficulty modes, wow). Input feels a little unresponsive at times, but I think that's just webGL. Great job overall!

First time seeing this kind of beat em up game in a game for me, it was a lot of fun and incredibly polished! Really hit the retro feel! A lot was done, very impressive!

It's a nice take on old school beats them up ! I think that the enemies have too many HPs though, they take too long to take down. Very cool graphics also !

Great look, controls feel, music/SFX. Liked the ! and ? on the heads to show which are targeting you.
Enemies on level 2 started making a clanging sound, with no health going down, so not sure what I was missing there. 
Great change to all the other games in the jam :), thanks for making it. Well done!

Yh the clanking sound is just their armor going down and as long as they have that up they take absolutely no DAMAGE. Thanks for playing "Modern Fighters"

Pretty nice beat em up. The art was great and matched the vibes of the game really well. Found a bit of a mini softlock while playing where if you have a barrel pushed up against a corner and jump on it you can get trapped for awhile until gravity does its work (not a full softlock but still prevents movement for something like 20 seconds)

The music complimented the gameplay well and was nice to listen to. The enemies tended to be bullet  sponges which tended to get a bit annoying after a few combos with the health having barely decreased but the different combos were great and fun to pull off.

Thanks for the feedback. Just like everyone else, you've also complained about the issue of the enemies "Health'. I have written down all the ideas I've gotten from every comment and implemented most of them. After the game jam is over I will make the final update and give for a play test. 

And for the barrel issue, I don't know why but I thought I set the barrel collider to "Ground" layer 😅, so that the player can gracefully stand and even walk on it, but I guess in future updates I will just remove the collision from the barrel and the "Characters".

Thanks for trying out "Modern Fighters", now go play some other game :P.

I spent waaaay too much time playing this, but I insisted on beating it on the hardest difficulty. So yeah, frustrating in the way that era of brawlers always is, but also fun in the same way. Idk if its a bug or a feature, but the keys don't leave your inventory when you fail a stage, so I ended with 41 keys

The key's not leaving your inventory was not a bug. I intentionally did that so when players die they have a better chance of getting 8 keys, and that's my THEME "An End is a New Beginning". Also you being able to get 42 keys means you must've gotten to play the secret level, am I right.

Ok, cool, I thought that may have been the case. And yeah, was fun :) The only thing that frustrated me a bit was the whistle mechanic, you slowly whittle the shield just for them to instantly whistle and you don't even do any damage. In spite of that though, I really enjoyed it.

If you don't mind me asking did you get to the secret level or at least the first boss😅😅,  sadly no one has been able to make it past level 2 and hearing that someone was able to get "42" keys makes me believe you're the game changer.

Well, I'll admit I don't know now if I did the secret level, I kinda thought the boss might have been due to the dialogue. I fought Pony Tail and beat her, and she said you needed 8 keys to drive off. If there is more than that I am curious and will probably go back and do it lol (I'm too much of a completionist for my own good and I like brawlers

AH, Finally someone was able to fight and beat "PonyTail". Thanks so much for playing Modern Fighters, and the "Keys" are to open the gate not to follow her, the option to follow Pony Tail or go with the Scientists are free. Ok, I went back and beat it properly lmao. I realize I misread PonyTail's dialogue and thought the car needed 8 keys and thus leaving with her was the secret end or something, but I went back and beat Electris (first time too!) Also idk if you noticed, but when you kick PonyTail into the air, her airborn sprite is that of Electris'. Lastly......sus

DUDE, you finished the gameeeee, ahaha FINALLY, and you got the  "SUS" ending. Thanks man, hope you had fun playing 😆. Also yes PonyTail's animation was shared with other enemy units like "Brute", "Punk", and finally "Electris", so i probably forgot to overwrite her animation in the override controller 😅.
