i’ve seen a comment complaining about lag, but there’s no slowdown here. and the jellyfish is adorable! the game felt a bit too easy, as i was bopping around exploding mines and hitting walls all over the place and never died once

What up Pello I reviewed your game at the very end of my latest VoD at https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1517746769?t=1h11m56s

Developer

Hey thanks! Scalpha, you’re right about graphics. https://yollie.itch.io/heart-donor is also a 5 for me. I wish I could have more time to at least try harder haha. Also the message at the end is about myself, it’s hard to get a good position in a jam. You have to get everything right (idea, fun, originality, visuals, etc.)

Catchy music, nice graphics and fun gameplay. Can't even say more :D

I really like this game! The graphics look very good, and the music and sound design also fit really well. The controls are responsive, and I think that tying health and a light together is a really clever idea.

If you were to continue with this game, I'd put a way bigger focus on the light mechanic, as that definitely has the most potential, especially in a deep sea setting (perhaps you could incorporate anglerfish), and I'd drop the shooting. I don't think it really adds that much to the game

Developer

Hey thanks for playing it and for the review. About the light and the shooting I think you’re right. Maybe I wanted to add more elements to reinforce the relation with tools & health. Dash and fireball may be handy, but yes, you can finish the game without them… but hey, they were also easy to add and the may be fun to use when you know the scenario. IDK, it’s hard to make all the right decisions in a weekend haha, but in general it’s true that it’s better to remove stuff from a game rather than trying to add too much. Thanks again!

Really enjoyed the game. The spongebob like music in the background got me. Concept is cool. The fact You have implemented Johnny Depp in a way is rewarding by itself xD. You have managed to make a nice game in the given time I must say.

Great coding, Jacob.

I enjoyed your game.

I like your art, it's way better than what i can manage.

I also like that most actions have animations, sound effects, particles, etc. Feels juicy.

Movement mechanics are solid and satisfying.

The only thing that significantly reduces the enjoyment of the game is lag, it's really bad, you should figure out what is causing it. (It's rendering the entire tilemap each frame probably)

Feedback:

1. Fix the FPS issue, please, this shouldn't lag that bad.

2. It would be nice to control the dash strength so you could do a variable strength dash.

3. Add branches to your level that have unique challenges filled with collectibles.

Developer(+1)

Hey thanks for you review! I would like to create better levels, but I always run out of time. You’re right about the lag, I tried to fix it quickly but it needs a better solution. I could just use the checkpoints to populate the map, for example, or just create smaller levels. Anyway, personally I like (at least) to show the concept, even if it’s not perfectly executed and optimized.

So fun and funny! I like the camera shakes and all the different elements you incorporated. The tutorial was well done and helped me enjoy the game

I love the colors and the overall mood of this entry. The music is a blast, and I had a lot of fun playing the game. Some of my considerations:

+ The movement and controls felt really good

+ The hit feedback was juicy!

+ The level design is good

- It would be awesome if it was possible to swim (maybe slowly) just holding the mouse button instead of clicking repeatedly.

- Some level elements were too similar to the health gems.

Great job!

Really loved the game, but I didn't shoot or dash once, just headbutted a lot of things and globally had a great time. Music is cool, controls are reactive, catching healing items with the health bar is really cool. Never got low in life though so I didn't get to experience the darkness of the sea. Great job!

Good work! i like the ending, it made me "lol" you spelt "trial" wrong by the way :D other then that, theres no real negatives for this, great sound, graphics, controls, etc. Great work! music reminds me of spongebob though.

The presentation and music are amazing, the game feel is very great <3 had fun playing it, the effor is pretty obvious on this one, keep up the good work

I love the name of this game :). Had a bit of a hard time navigating and could not do any shooting since I was too occupied trying to  keep my cursor pointed up so my character would not sink.  (Reflex games have never been my thing.) Otherwise, I did enjoy the concept and visuals.

I am especially impressed with the tutorial you took the time create. I've played enough jam games that just throw you in blind with at best a brief explanation of the controls that might not be detailed enough to understand -- or at least not for me XD.

This is an absolute gem!!! I love everything about this game. The art, the music, the text and the tutorial. Really good. I will definitely check your other games.
And the last sentence after I found Amber could really be true :D

Nice ambience in your game! The theme song reminds me of spongebob. I did not need to use fireballs to get through the level. The art is great, though indeed very blue. I managed to get through the level quite easily!

Here is my playthrough.

Developer (1 edit)

Haha! thanks it was fun to see somebody else playing for a change! Fireballs are not mandatory, but they could clear your way when you bump against other fish or mines.

The game is cool, but The blue palette is too bland, and would get really spiced up with some purples and greens. I like the gameplay, but I can't shoot for some reason, and the mobile support is cool! Cool game!

Submitted

Pretty good concept and design, also love the Spongebobian music :D

My favorite game of the jam so far! Very original, cute and fun.

Submitted

Very cool game and concept, well executed. However, as there are health pick-ups that are blue and also enemies that are blue, it is confusing at first as to what is there to help or hinder you. Maybe all enemies should be a red colour, like the lava coming out of the volcanoes? Only a minor pick though, really like it other than that.

Developer

Hey thanks for the review. It’s a good point, I’m not very good with colours and I tried to make everything blue but the lava. Probably with more time I could try better combinations.

This was a lot of fun!

Plays really well, and feels intuitive to control. Having to position health drops at the center of your health bar to get the maximum out of them is a great concept that I don't think I've seen before!

There's some great visual touches, like the trail of bubbles you leave behind as you move and the screen shake when taking damage that add a lot of juice.

Loved the little touches too - the title screen is great, and the playable tutorial makes for a really good introduction to the mechanics.

Agree with Phoque below that a time trial mode would be a perfect fit. The game was a blast when I was rushing through and spamming dash, that more encouragement to play that way would be amazing :)

WOW! Loved it all the way, from the title to the description, to game feel… Everything is so cool, I had a wonderful time after this way too short night :D

If I have to nick pick, I am not a huge fan of the 4:3 format (but that’s personal taste) and I didn’t feel the need to use the dash, but using it was fun! Maybe to make people want to use the dash you could put a timer for speedrunners (I added mine as a last minute thought and love the implications)

A bit sad you are in the first ones I tried, I will have more expectations for the others now :D
