Didn't see much of a link between the topic and the game. Had some performance issues and lagginess. Was unclear what drained my battery initially.

But the criticisms end there and gawd dammmn is this a wonderful game. It looks stunning, the lighting and animations are simply wonderful. The gameplay loop is wonderful because it just feels so good to explore the landscape. THe controls were so brilliant i didn't think about them once (which really is a massive compliment to say they were just that intuititve). The sound design and audio, whilst not all that complex, put me exactly in the right mood.

This is truly a wonderful game. PLEASE make it into something bigger. Also I bellieve you will do very well in this jam :D

Developer

Thank you ! The idea for the theme was that you can progress towards your goal even if you fail, preparing the terrain for the next battery cycles, making it possible / easier.

Hi! I've put together a list of my top games from the jam and before I post them on the community section, I'm just checking that you are okay having your game's link on the list?

Developer

sure no problem !

This is truly a masterpiece, and everything about it blew me away. I actually felt kinda sad rolling about (lol). One of the best games I've played of late.

Very atmospheric game. Realisation is good. There is a lot of skill in this procedural terrain generation. It seems to be a mining game. Did I miss something ? I played it longer than I expected. Game is polished.  Great work.

Didn't quite work on macOS Big Sur 11.0.1, got the classic Unity "You do not have permission to open the application “Sunburn - MAC.app”." error. Looks really awesome though, will check it out on PC later.

WOW It  like I am having a trip to HUGE planet that I saw in the movie STARWARS

The graphics were truly amazing and the animation of the player was also really nice and the whole lighting sett up just improved the overall look of the game that much more! The idea also worked very well so the player can slowly generate there own path over time meaning that incorporates the theme very well! The upgrade system also added to the use of theme even more, meaning that not only in a path generation sense but also in a physical levelling up sense: progress is made!

The shop UI could maybe be incorporated into the initial base somehow so that way the transition between gameplay is a bit smoother.

Overall, I really enjoyed playing and this is truly a masterpiece of a game! PS this game definitely deserves a top 10 spot!

I think the game sunburned my pc

Submitted

i couldnt really play it it kept crashing so if you can do some optimizations would be cool but i wont blame you for this one i am the one that has the toaster pc

Developer

Sorry to hear that, i did the best i could during the short timeframe, i will try to look at it but i don't really know what i can improve. I will probably have to learn about compute shaders to take some load of theCPU or simply make some "Quality" settings to let players lower the render distance a bit !

The controls and the grafics are awsome, but i dont really see the theme in there

This is undoubtedly my favorite game in the entire jam! Unfortunately it doesn't  meet the topic requirements I'm looking for... I'll explain later.

The visuals are stunning. The minimalist details fit very well together, and the color choices for the terrain and ore are perfect.

The game is simple and is not overly complicated. I had a perfect understanding how everything worked. (although I am looking at the screenshots and I just found out apparently you could create terrain with the laser, don't know how I missed that) I understand some people didn't know that the sunlight hurt them but it was immediately obvious to me. The name of the game is called Sunburn after all.

You did a great job creating a sense of becoming more powerful the more you played, and you had objectives that made me want to finish and complete them.  The game with the mining and ore collecting does get a little repetitive but I was still hooked. I played for an 15 extra minutes even after I finished everything. My only complaint was that after I did everything I wanted more, but sadly every journey must come to an end.

The music and sound is great. It's a bit on the quiet end, but I don't mind. Maybe it is missing a few sound effects here and their but maybe that is a good thing because otherwise it would have been overwhelming and may have distracted from the experience.

Now lets talk about the topic requirements. I understand that many people have a different interpretation of what it means "Failure is Progress," the majority of people thought it meant keep dying and get stronger or gain more knowledge, etc... other people kept on the surface level and took a story approach to it. In your case, you chose the former. The problem with that is that I've seen it too much, so it's not really that original and it doesn't make it stand out from the rest.

With that being said, there are games I gave higher ratings than this, but this is still my favorite game in the jam because it's so engaging and doesn't frustrate me at all. Out of every game I have played so far, this is the one I really want to this made into a full game that I can sink hours into playing and pay money for.

Thank you very much for this in-depth feedback , it means a lot. I am glad you enjoyed it !

Wow this game is very impressive! I love the graphics and how you did the destructible terrain. A lot of games would go the minecraft route but I like how you did it with those triangle shapes. It was pretty fun mining around and getting orbs. I have a few nitpicks with this is game that were related to communication to the player:

- It was never really clear why my battery was going down, I thought it may be because of me using my laser, or moving, but I never would have guessed it was being in the sun unless I looked at the comments. I didn't even realize there was shadows in this game, so if you want to keep that as a mechanic you need to make the shadows much more pronounces and make it so when you're in the sun you are visibly affected by it like it gets super bright or something

- Why start the player in the upgrade screen when they don't have any money

- It was never really clear to me what the wheel and laser upgrades did. Does the laser upgrade improve my blue laser or my pink laser? Why is there a power value next to them, do they cost more energy the more I upgrade them

- I don't see how this fits the theme at all, but that's a really minor gripe because it is just a game jam theme after all

Overall really impressive work!

Developer

Thank you for your detailed feedback ! Unfortunately i had to rush the gameplay loop because the terrain part took me a while to implement properly and didint really have time to "teach" the player everything, although there is clues for  him to learn.

- The game is called Sunburn and your character emits smoke / high pitch noises when you are exposed to the sun, volumetric lighting is there to display the rays of light so you don't have to look at the shadows on the ground to avoid it.

- Didint really have time to do a better waiting screen, anyway this screen is displayed when the spawn area is generated, this may take a while and locking the players prevents him to see the ores before the grounds is fully generated.

- Increases movement speed and both lasers (mining speed) as well as their energy consumption, 1kJ being 1kW second, i admit the values can be confusing but it's mostly to give an idea of the scale of the upgrade to the player.

- There is 2 things you can do in a battery cycle to "progress" : Farm ores until you die and get stronger for the next cycle, or use your energy to terraform a path making a faster route without obstacles for your next cycle to be able to reach the objective.

A bit laggy on old laptops, but i found this game nice

Submitted(+1)

this game is wonderful and chill.

i'd only say you could do with explaining that being in the sun is bad in game, as i missed it until i tabbed out to look at the comments to see if anyone knew why my battery was randomly going down

and that if you're mining a blob, the battery shouldn't go down, as its a bit frustrating to get somewhere  start mining and die

very cool gamejam game, this is at the top for good reasons

Nice Game nice Graphics nice everything!!!

Stunning visuals and knowing that the planet is procedural generated is very cool :)!

Loved that I could deform my surroundings. Smooth controls and good vibe throughout the game.

Job well done in so little time...thumbs up :)!

Wow!! totally blown away by this game, it fits the theme perfectly well, I finished the whole game and uploaded the data to stratosphere by getting booster and sunscreens. Well done, your game deserves 5 stars at all these aspects, also for future improvements add a bit of basic tutorial or text guide, I had to set volume up to understand that game was giving instructions in voice , rest is fantastic, good luck for jam! :)
