In what way does your game fit the theme?
My game fits the theme via its storyline. In order to progress through the game, more 'friends' are required as they work together.

Did you write all the code yourself and made all the assets from scratch?
I wrote all the code myself, however I made use of free assets for both art and music. I acquired these from the Unity Asset Store and from www.opengameart.org

Cool and fun game Loftus! I really enjoy it :) The only thing that bothered me a bit was the speed of the character. Btw the character is extremely cute, especially before he lands!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for checking out my game and providing some positive feedback! I agree about the movement speed, I'll be sure to make him faster once the jam is over :)

Lovely little game, with a nice story.

I agree with lisyarus on the mechanical changes, adding that there is probably a problem with your check to see if the player is on the ground since they cannot seem to jump when half-way on a ledge.

Developer

Thank you for checking out my game and providing feedback! I'm glad you liked the story :)

Yeah the colliders was something I was tweaking right until I submitted and I probably could have done with some more time to make them better. I'll be sure to work on them once the jam is over!

Cute game! Fun to play and very nice visually. I like all the sprite animations of all the characters. I think "point" texture filtering might make your sprites come out more crisp.

Great work!

Developer

Thank you very much I really appreciate you checking out the game and providing positive feedback! You're totally right about the texture filtering, was an oversight on my part! Will fix it as soon as the jam is over haha.

Cheers :)

An incredibly lovely game! Made it till the end. Let me add some improvement suggestions:

  • I’d say the game could be a little more fast-paced
  • To my mind it is better not to use linear texture filtering with pixel art
  • The player sometimes gets somewhat trapped on ground edges - he can’t jump from there & seems to slowly slide downwards (doesn’t affect the game experience much, though)
  • The last task (saving the fox from school on fire) could be a little more involved, e.g. manually find him & avoid burning obstacles, though I guess it is what it is due to time constraints

Anyways, enjoyed playing it, amazing job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for checking out my game and providing positive, useful feedback! I'm really glad you enjoyed it.

I'll be sure to increase the speed of the player and to improve the pixel art so it isn't blurry once the jam is done! You're right about the collisions and I totally agree about the last section. I had a lot more content planned for it but I completely ran out of time at the end so everything was quite rushed! Definitely areas for improvement and thank you for taking the time to go over them in detail, It really helps me to improve :)

A fun and sweet little platform game. I especially liked the story.

Developer

Thank you for checking out my game and providing some nice feedback, I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

This was quite cute and well done! The platforming was sufficient enough to facilitate the story that blew me away, and brought a smile to my face :)

Developer

Thank you so much for the kind words, I'm really glad you enjoyed playing my game! Thanks for checking it out :)

Really great game with good game feel and level design. I loved exploring the map, it was quite enjoyable to find the character as their dialogues were well written. Dying was a little punitive for that kind of game, I would have implemented some kind of health system to prevent player from backtracking after making one mistake. Also, it would have been so cool to have the friends you rescues follow the player. Maybe for a future update ;)

Developer

Thank you for checking out my game and providing feedback!

Having the friends follow was my initial idea but was a step too far for me given the time frame. One day!

I really appreciate the kind words and I'm glad you enjoyed the story elements within the game :)

I had a dumb grin on my face while playing this. I found the experience very cute. I would have preferred i faster moving speed. HAVE A LOVELY DAY

Developer

Haha thank you so much for checking out my game and providing feedback! :)

Hey! So I really enjoyed playing your game :D.

Things I Liked:

  • I thought the story was really well done. All the little mini-quests you did built on each other in a satisfying way at the end.
  • I thought the music choice was really good and set a great atmosphere for the game.
  • 10/10 success on the theme.
  • The pixel art choice was awesome as well as the animations that you did for the crate lifting. Can you point me to a tutorial that shows how to do that lol?

Suggestions for improvement:

  • I think that the pixel art was really good but it seemed blurry. I would try playing with the sprite settings to see if you could make them crisper.
  • I think that some of the audio effects, like jumping, deaths and pickups, could use some work. Adding that kinda thing really brings it to life.
  • It was an easy platformer which Im super cool with especially cause of the story but it all seemed a little...slow. Maybe speeding up the movement of the enemies and player may help getting invested in the story quicker.

I really appreciate you giving feedback on my game! Good luck in the jam!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Hey thanks so much for checking out my game and providing detailed feedback!

I'm really glad you enjoyed some of the features I included. Sadly I have no tutorial for the crate lifting, it was just something I winged on the spot haha. It was a combination of creating an animation, using an animation event and instantiating a new object in the right place. There's probably much better ways to do it but in the timeframe I just went with what worked lol.

The sprite blurriness, game speed and lack of audio effects are probably the three biggest issues with the game I totally agree! I'll do my best to rectify them once the jam is over.

Thanks again for the kind words and useful feedback, I really appreciate it. Good luck to you too, I think we had similarities with the humour in our stories so it was fun checking out your game :)

You're welcome!

Gotcha! I'm just getting into animation and I thought it was cool how you implemented that. Ill see if Im able to reproduce something similar with your advice.

Good luck!

Developer

Best of luck man! Coming from an engineering background, animation seemed totally alien to me the first time I tried to learn it but the more I practice the more comfortable with it I get. I'm sure you'll nail it :)

The music was really great! I wish there were some sweet sound effects to go with it. The character walked really slow, which was a little tedious. The message was very nice as well.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for checking out my game! Yeah sound effects was one of the last things to be cut when I ran out of time unfortunately, I think the character walking speed was one of those design decisions I made that didn't really pan out, but it's something to learn from moving forward.

Cheers for providing feedback :)

Submitted(+1)

Were you going for peaceful with the walking speed? I was thinking about it more and the music is very upbeat with the character being slow, which I think causes a disconnect. Maybe if it was more relaxing music with a sunset it would fit better.

Developer(+1)

Sorry I've only just seen this, didn't get a notification for some reason!

Yeah every game I've made so far has been on the 'difficult' side of things so I wanted to make a much more accessible game that was relaxed and friendly. Kind of like an adventure game but from a platforming perspective. It was one of those little experiments that I thought I'd try during the game jam, while learning how to implement some new features.

It definitely is a core piece of feedback I've received from players, and I think ultimately as soon as people see that It's a platformer, the speed/responsiveness of actions are going to be major factors. I was disappointed I couldn't make the sky look better in the timeframe but I learned quite a bit throughout the week and even more so thanks to feedback so no time wasted. Thanks for providing some extra thoughts and feedback, It really helps! :)

It's a pretty charming way to go about the jam's theme

The sprites are a bit blurry, but nothing that can't be fixed by changing the import settings
The combat is pretty basic and the movement is too slow, but the objectives were clear and the game didn't overstay its welcome so it never got annoying

Hope you keep improving 👍

Developer(+1)

Thank you for checking out the game and providing feedback! The game speed and sprite blurriness seem to be the overriding issues raised by people so i'll definitely tackle them once the jam is over.

Thanks for the kind words :)

Submitted(+1)

Simple and wholesome. I think it's too bad the enemies are just enemies, feels like they're here for gameplay purpose only, as jumping on / killing seemed against the overall narrative to me (although I did notice you tried to make it feel as "friendly" as possible through the signs). Having an option to reason with them somehow and show them grouping up regardless of differences is ultimately the best option would've been a great way to set your game apart, as of right now it feels kind of like a default platformer, although I'm sure you learned a lot making it :) The school on fire ending was a bit surprising, in a good way, and it would've been cool to have it be more expanded, and not just a cutscene.

As previously mentioned, the overall movement feels a bit too slow and floaty, it's too bad you forgot about enabling pixel perfect graphics, as it muddles the overall look a bit (especially the icons). The graphics and music fit well together though, even if you didn't make them, you did a good job at creating something coherent. My only remark on that would be to add a skybox or clouds in the background, even a gradient, because as of right now, just having the sky blue is a bit plain.

Developer

Thank you for the detailed feedback! I remember you had some good ideas for my previous game jam too haha. I can't disagree with any of it and there was a few things you mentioned that I certainly wanted to address (clouds etc.) but unfortunately was incredibly pressed for time at the end trying to fit the story in. I think I was so happy with implementing a few things I hadn't tackled before I overlooked some of the basics! All things to improve and learn from though. Thanks :)

this game has the best music i have seen so far in this game jam and in any game jam.

Developer

Ah thank you very much for the kind words! :)

Helping foxes so they will help you! I recognised the art from a brackeys video about character movement. You used it in a fun way :)

Developer

Thank you for checking out the game and for the kind words :)

Cool game! Top tip: Change the image's filter effect to "Point (no filter)" to get rid of some of the blur on the pixel art! Click on the image (in the project menu) to bring up it's menu in the inspector. You can change the filter effect from there!

Developer

Ah thank you for that! I've done that once before on a previous game but totally forgot about it this time round and you're right, the visuals could certainly be a bit crisper. Thanks for checking out the game and leaving some feedback :)

Submitted(+1)

so much fun! loved the atmosphere, had a big smile on my face the whole time!

Developer

Thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed it. I'll be sure to check out your game too :)

Submitted(+1)

A really good submission. The character felt a bit slow, but apart from that, it's a solid and enjoyable game.

Developer

Thanks for taking the time to play my game and give some feedback! Noted about character speed, I'll definitely take that into consideration for any platformers I work on in the future :)

Submitted(+1)

Ah I'm a sucker for a fun story platformer. Though the character movement feels a tad bit slow. But overall lots of good work!

And just an extra note, try to be more specific where you got the assets! Some people might wanna use them too :)

Developer

Thanks for checking out my game and providing some feedback! I definitely see your point about the movement speed, I ran so low on time trying to get the story elements finished that I never really refined the movement and physics to the point I wanted to.  I'll take more time in those sort of areas in the future for sure :)
