Game Description
Masked Escape is a 2D topdown stealth game. You don’t belong. To survive, you must hide — or pretend to be one of them.

How does your game tie into the theme?
The player crafts a mask from a dead creature in order to escape. But the mask might not be as friendly as you think.

Not gonna lie, I was freaked out by this game and having to hide in the bushes so often (stealth games stress me out). With each new part of the game I felt more and more tense and with every challenge it felt like there was more at stake. The feeling of suspense is so well done and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.

Just curious, but as a total Godot newbie, how did you make it so that enemies could spot the player within their defined field of vision? Is it done by using collision shapes / raycasts? Would love to know more about how to accomplish such a thing if you don't mind sharing!

Overall, this was really fun and so well made! Amazing work.

Fantastic game! Everything fit together super well. Can't believe you were able to craft so many wonderful and detailed levels. The VFX and shaders indicating when you were running out of stamina/energy were really fun. Great job!

The visuals and the atmosphere were amazing! I had some problems with audio and performance, but it wasn't that bad and I was able to finish the game without much trouble. The game feels very polished, I liked it a lot!

Awesome entry!

Im usually not patient enough for movement like this, but the level layout and the challenge kept me coming back!

I love it! The game ticks all the boxes I want to see. I would enjoy playing a full-blown game in this style! Most excellent work!

I love the mystery of this world. It's intriguing. Such a well crafted, cohesive experience. I died on the credits screen a couple times just for the fun of putting on the mask when the credits are up. Nice job with this one.

Insane sound design, aesthetic art, and tight controls.

The masking mechanics feel pleasant and rewarding. I really liked it, the atmosphere is captivating, especially with headphones on. It's incredible that you managed to do all of this during the jam, thank you!

Very atmospheric, really loved your artwork. Everything felt well thought out and put together. I particulary liked the shader for the shadow/hiding in bushes.

Big fan of stealth games too, loved that you didn't do too much explaining, that you just jumped right into it and let the player make their own conclusions. Also, i appreciated the little touch of forcing a player to walk through tall grass right at the beginning, to make them realise "Ahh, okay, i will probably need to hide in tall grass. "

Couldn't finish it unfortunatly though, there was one particular area i was struggling with for a few minutes before giving up, which is a shame! But i had a great time with it regardless.

Very fun game, you should be proud of it

Developer

Thank you so much! also nice spotted with your "...forcing a player to walk through..." comment. That was indeed intended ;)

Incredible!! Everything felt so polished: music, art and controls. Very impressed by this. Good job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks <3

Had a great time playing this, super impressed by everything... Nice art and smooth animations, feels good just walking around from the very beginning, lovely interactions (standing in a bush!!!!!), and music that calmed me down while I was sweatily dodging the enemies...

Just a simple idea wonderfully executed, no notes.

Ok 1 tiny note: it was a little hard to see where the vision cones ended, which barely mattered so didn't really bug me... To keep the same look I would have made the hitbox end a little before the end of the visual gradient so they feel more forgiving.

Anyway 10/10 great job.

Developer

Thank you so much. chilling in bushes is also my favorite thing :)) - and yea the detection range/hitbox could definitely be improved upon.

Wow this was so good! Perfect balance of difficulty, and super fun to play. Also the art??? The music??? So good! Amazing job :)

Developer

Thank you so much. I had a lot of fun making it. I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

Super nice controls and I loved the atmosphere and look of the game! A great amount of challenge in this too

Developer

Thanks!

That was great! great atmosphere, nice art, nice music, well made short stealth game. Fortunately it ends after getting more repetitive. You could add different color of enemies and masks, and that you'd have to switch between them, or some power that can freeze enemies for a few seconds. Still, fun game, I reached the city so, that was cool, good job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback! I agree with you that it becomes a bit repetitive towards the end. This can definitely be improved! - I'm happy you reached the city. it's all fun and chill there.

I loved your game. It’s got really strong atmosphere simple control but engaging loop. The art is beautiful but minimalist and always happy when it doesn’t take much reading to understand that game. Only gripe(and it’s a small one) I did struggle to tell where the edge of detection range is

Developer

Thanks! I too enjoy when games has no- to minimal "reading to understand" - I feel like this improves the chances of the player feeling immersed. Maybe it gives the player more freedom to explore. And yea, the detection range could definitely be improved. Thanks again!

Excellent game all around! to have made both the design, art, and audio in a little over a week, and for your first gamejam?? cant imagine how good the second one is gonna be!

the musical elements get introduced at the right pace, the leaves going into the screen when you stand on bushes is such a simple but effective detail. as others said the difficulty is just right to not have you waltz over the game first try but also not have you get tired of retrying the same thing too many times. Bravo!

Developer

Thank you so much! - I also worked really hard on it, that's no secret. I had my autumn vacation from school, so basically worked on this as a full-time job. no regrets. Thank you again for the detailed comment and pointing out the small details I fiddled around with. it really means a lot <3

Some of the slickest art in the jam! The characters moved there heads pretty abruptly sometimes which could have turned into rage bait if the music wasnt so good! Did you make all the audio aswell? But yea such an alluring world. Going off into the city at the end felt so cozy. Also the way the character would lose there mind if they wore the mask too long had aura!

Developer

Wow thanks! - Yea I made the audio aswell  (ableton 11 and samples from splice). I'm happy you made it to the city. it's very cozy there indeed <3

Yay! A stealth game! I love the ambiance and how you let the player explore the mechanics first before introducing real challenges.

Not sure if it’s intentional or if it's just me, but the creatures that hold their ground felt a bit unpredictable — I often had to rely on instinct rather than carefully planning/timing my route. Not a bad thing, just an observation :)

Overall, I had a really fun time playing! Thanks for the experience.

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you so much! - yea the creatures that stand their ground can be pretty erratic. Maybe it was an easy way to bump up the difficulty without adding new features. This can definitely be improved upon.
Thanks for the input and kind words :))

The artstyle is great :D Also i really like the colorpalette choice. it looks very nice. The machanics are clever and really challenging. after the first level i was like "too easy meh" cause the enemies were too predictable but it got really hard really fast. i liked the progression of difficulty and i made it safely to the city after a bunch of retries :D

Good job, great game especially the pixelart and colors :D

Developer(+1)

Yeaa. You made it to the end. good job :)
Thanks a lot for the kind words, it means a lot <3

Very nice game and nice art style.

The mask mechanic was very interesting. But it could be improved a bit

The enemy mask area was not really true; you can go a bit closer to the area. I think having a bit of grace time when they see you could be good, but restarting when hitting even a touch was brutal.

Also, no Gamepad support :(

Good work. Please rate the Spectral Mask back <3

Developer

Ty AzyrGames. Thanks for the detailed comment. I will definitely look into gamepad support for my next game :)

The hitbox was tough to balance. The enemy hitbox is indeed a bit smaller. I would rather have the player going "oh, I should have died there" instead of "what? why did I die there!" . idk - It's hard to balance i think. And yea the grace time should probably be more than 0.1 sec hehe.
Thanks for playing!

I really like the use of shaders and visuals in general, its got a good atmosphere to it.

Developer

Yeaa. Shaders are so nice, and fun to work with. Thanks!
