Here's my playthrough of your game! It's at the start of this video.
Hey! Really appreciate you doing a playthrough of my game on YouTube! Means alot!
I'm not exactly a fan of RPGmaker genre of games so when it comes down to playing one, the writing/story/narrative is the pushing force that drives me to try it. It has to be REALLY good
In your game, this aspect could do with some work... You clearly have imagination for creating a narrative, but you need to polish the writing - by fixing the gramatical errors and awkward sentences first and foremost, but also by simply writing more stuff so you eventually accumulate skill and become proficient in it!
Others mentioned default RPGMaker assets, personally I find no issue in using assets in general, but in this case some of the assets didn't make much sense in the context of the game. The first thing that comes to mind is the fact that your thumbnail depicts a sort of eastern european medieval hut, while the game itself is set in a large, victorian-era-esque manor. There are more things but I'm sure you're aware of them at this point lol
But! You DID make this alone in just 7 days, and I think that's impressive on its own! Keep on gamedevving
Yeahh I'm quite aware of all the fallbacks of the game, and have absolutely no issues in discussing them openly. Grammatical errors and assets had to take a hit due to time constraints, as stated before.
I indeed have been writing more stuff in general and coming up with more ideas which could be implemented in various games, which has indeed helped me quite alot by simply making my brain go wild. Once again, appreciate you just giving it a fair shot, thanks a bunch!
Spooky game. I liked how the player had to unlock both of the endings to see the entire story and the horrible things that happened to the Myers family.
Haha yeahh, I just thought there wouldn't be any insentive to make the player unlock both the endings except curiosity, so gave them a little nudge nudge
Post - QA
Sound que works 85% of the time, the rest is off the marks (I’m counting the microwave dings). The story is confusing and a bit messy if not for the true ending, minor spelling mistake (Understandable from time rushing).
One man team is not easy so good work!
Yeahh the deadline really did have an impact on having to cut corners, it's alright tho.
Also really enjoyed your stream! Appreciate the criticism!
Don’t forget the comedy~
Nice Spooky Music.
Ahaha, music could definitely use some more work but thank you!
Nice work on your entry! I liked the spooky mood you set using RPG maker assets. Perhaps more writing or developed story is key for this set up, less on gameplay since didn't have time for unique assets. It could do with a nice reskin down the line!
Thank you very much! Yes, being low on time did mean having to cut corners in many aspects such as the sound design and assets, but i did what I could within a week. And yeah definitely! I am planning to make a bigger game which expands on this stuff down the line in godot or something when I have more experience in game dev!
(Your game was pretty cool too, great job on the unique style dude)
Reminds me of the RPGs I used to play back in the 2000s. The sound effects were spot on. My game bugged out unfortunately. Regardless, well done!
Could you elaborate on what exactly the bug was and how you encountered it? The max I can recommend you is trying restarting the game and playing since new builds are closed off, but it would be really helpful to know more about the bug
The game didn't progress beyond that point in the screenshot.
Nice little story, interacting with everything I could was quite fun haha I have to agree with some stuff I've seen in other comments, I feel the main character's design doesn't really fit with the atmosphere and story. Some more sfx and details would've been nice, still nice use of sound effects. The story was interesting even tho it was a little predictable, but still liked it! Also agree that I wanted to be told more stuff with events, images or sound, rather than text sometimes.
Congrats and amazing job for your first project!
Yeahh I agree with the characters looking out of place. I originally thought of making my own unique sprite for all the different characters seen throughout the game, but that ended up being quite a hassle as a first timer. I had to stick to the character generator provided in Rpg Maker, even though the characters didn't exactly fit the aesthetics of the rest of the game.
Text description of everything was also kind of a necessity, since the art side of things really proved to be a bigger challenge than expected. Guess I need to improve on my art alot haha.
I do think there are several things I want to mention in the review, but that is what reviews are for, so I will mention them. I think just submitting a game is awesome, so please take this more as feedback than anything else.
Visually, the game uses the default RPG Maker assets and default sounds, so I cannot really rate it high in that area since it essentially reuses assets that can be found in many other default RPG Maker games. For that reason, and because a lot of people in the jam are creating their own assets within the seven-day time limit, I cannot rate it very high. I also think there are some odd tile choices in the house. The tile used for the doors looks strange to me because it never fills out, and for a mansion like this, it does not fit since it looks more like a door at a bar or something similar. The main character also looks like they came straight out of a fantasy game. The sound is a bit loud too. I think it should be set to around 40 to 50 percent by default.
More importantly, since none of the visuals are unique, which is fine, I think more attention could have been given to the writing. Sometimes words that should be capitalized are not. The word "Though" is sometimes written as "Tho," which is fine as slang, but it feels immersion-breaking for a game that focuses mainly on its story. There are also mistakes like "Dear" being misspelled as "Deer" and cases where "seem" is used instead of "seems." This is important because, as I mentioned, you are using the default RPG Maker packs, which means the story needs to elevate the experience. However, when the writing has many grammatical mistakes, it disrupts the reading experience for the player.
As for the story itself, I do appreciate that it is a legitimate horror story. However, I think there is a lack of setup. For example, we get flashbacks with the character’s mother, which establishes some things, then we explore, find a picture, and after burning it, we are told to sleep. I do not think it makes much sense for the character to want to sleep in the house, especially since the bed has blood on it. You could have easily just said enough time has passed that it is night time. Still, I think it has some charm. It reads like one of those slightly campy horror movies. Especially the ending.
Another nice thing is that it has dialogue for many objects, which is very cool. I think there is a lot of room for improvement, but the fact that you submitted a game to a jam means you have already succeeded in many ways.
Thank you very much for such a detailed analysis and review! It means alot when someone actually pays attention and provides viable feedback. I agree that the game has severe callbacks from the visual and audio standpoint, but this WAS my first ever project, so that's to be expected. I mainly tried to focus on providing a short and sweet immersive horror story, but I think the grammer did take a hit due to the time constraints. This is obviously more so a trial game to test my abilities in a jam, so improvement is a given with time. I appreciate you playing my game beyond anything else!
Lets goo first time gang.
Considering it was a prepacked RTP asset combo, and the default noises, it wasn't too bad!
Yeahh definitely could've improved on the sound design, but it's about what you'd expect from a first timer, thanks for playing this on stream tho!
really cool game!! enjoyed the story and you really created a spooky vibe, great work!!!
Did my best with the little I knew, guess it worked out after all!!
A good story with creepy vibe, Good job!
Glad you liked it!
A neat story based experience! I love the vibe of the game and it has some really chilling moments in it!
Kinda wished that there were more puzzles in this, but overall a great jam game!
Gameplay - Youtube
Thank you very much! Loved the gameplay you did, appreciate it!
what is life.
Idk you tell me
Cool story and nice visuals. An issue I had was that the audio was only coming out of my left ear? Definitely made me feel like I was going a bit crazy lol
Ahaha the audio is literally just a single track on loop, so probably that's what made you think that
Fun story to play through. Is the name myers a reference to Halloween's Michael Myers?
I didn't really think about that when naming, but that's a pretty cool reference nonetheless
strong visuals, i personally loved the music, good atmosphere, its a bit too straight forward in just telling you stuff and takes a bit too long to ramp up imo
Yeahhh I would've added some more stuff in it, which would've made it a bit more interesting to play if I had more experience. Oh well, you learn something new every jam.
It's a really strong entry, I'm always a fan of these older style rpg maker games, reminds me of early Markiplier playing games like "To the Moon." You did a really good job conveying the story to the player and the horror was well timed. I think if you were to expand the game maybe do a bit more showing rather than telling, instead of saying the picture is scary, show us a scary picture. All in all though, great job!
Yeahhh I was thinking of doing it the visual novel style, but due to time constraints and lack of art skills i had to scrap that idea. Will definitely work on it tho, thanks a bunch!
I love RPG's so its great to see one that can convey a story so well!
If you could check out my game that'd be awesome, if not I understand :D
This game has an interesting story and the atmosphere is really great too! Incredible work you've done here, congrats.
Please play my game too; I'd be really happy to hear your feedback.
