The Whole Windows UI looked good and even the start button and the menu looked real.

Toggled the audio/sound with the icon was a nice touch. nice game :D

The concept is cool! I like using the clip mascot for the game, I missed the guy! It's a really cool intro for a game too, reminds me of the old days of trying to connect to the internet (shows my age, huh?)

I found the platform jumping really hard though, with the small platforms and all :( Also, the wall jumping doesn't feel that natural to me? I think there would be a more intuitive set of controls for it

Can't wait to see where you go with this!

Submitted(+1)

Those shaky windows when you lose!

Submitted(+1)

The platforming controls are a little confusing, but the idea is very funny!

Submitted(+1)

Love the graphics and the little bits of windows UI. I found the platforming pretty difficult, I kept running into invisible boxes.

Those small platforms, dude! Honestly, very fun and I think it brought a lot of the feelings from Win95 back: anger and self-punishment, lol! Jokes aside, very solid. There is the issue of the moving platform where you can fall if you don't do nothing but should be simple to fix this inside Godot, depending on how you made the movement.

Good job!

Thanks !

great work, loving the windows forms, the little platforms are too smalllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

that was me falling, good stuff.

Developer

Thank you !

Great win95 idea! And the plateformer is really well done (except wall jump is a bit difficult to handle). Too bad the "connection" isn't part of the game!

Developer(+1)

Thanks !

Yeah I should have put more thought into the wall jump, but as I was testing I just got used to it and it seemed fine, I maybe should have asked other people to test it too...

Yeah I just went with my first idea and the theme ended up not being really part of the gameplay...

"Hello? Windows Customer service? Yes I'll hold"

**you are being connected-**

I lied. I didn't hold. "being connected" brought me flashbacks of Cheeky Clippy, whomst'd've'nt I need strongly to give a piece of my mind!
(Great concept! First game Jam ever? Wow! Can I ask some qustions to maybe try and learn a bit more:

1. How did you make the whole quotation system?

2. the window resize blow my mind! How did you pull that off?)

Also:

'Try repairing your connection with the help of Clippy.'

False advertising! Clippy ain't helping!

Developer(+1)

Haha thanks !

The quotation ? You mean Clippy's phrases ? It's just randomly chosing strings in an array (or dictionary i don't remember wich I used) and making them a label's text.

For the window, Godot's "WindowDialog" node has a "Resizable" option, so I just had to style the window, the rest was handled by the engine :)

Yeah I may have made a tiny lie...

Submitted(+1)

Thanks for getting back to me! Lie you did! (it all adds greatly to the feel though, so well played on that part as well)

Thank you for teaching me, never even knew "WindowDialog" node existed! There are so many nodes I haven't even encountered or touched yet... how did you fire up your Godot learning journey? Any tips that I can try? So far I have been trying to follow Yotube etc tutorials to learn.

Developer (1 edit)

Yeah i thought it was fun haha :D

Yeah there's like LOTS of different nodes, there probably a lot that I do that could really be simplified if I knew them more... Specially the control nodes are tricky. I did the same, youtube videos for the basics, and then just creating many different little unfinished things, to see what is possible and how to do it, and you'll just become more and more used to the different nodes, and scripting.

Also i have programmation classes at college, so that helps a bit, but not that much. If you want I can upload the godot project, but it is really messy so I can't guaranty it will be of help...

I find the game's aesthetic cute with the whole Windows 98 thing. It's been donebefore but its still novel when it happens. I might play the game more later I got stuck in the first level and got a bit frustrated :-(

One thing I'd recommend is that wall jumps have you stick automatically without having to hold the button down when handling digital input as an easier fix for that. I found the wall jumps a little bit tough to do and I always overshoot and undershoot jumps. Other options may include having the character slide up a wall with momentum or having them jump up the wall rather than away from it.

I found the triangle enemy a bit hard to see with the gradient at some points. Perhaps giving them an outline would help solve that as well (or maybe having the enemies be this sprite)

Clippy's changing comments are cute and annoying (which I assume is the point). One thing I may consider is having is an audio cue when he says something different (even though I am aware it can break the authenticity) so that you know he's being sassy.

I really like that Clippy reveals you can expand the Window size. I thought that was really clever and cool. The music is alright. One thing I may have considered if I was doing a similar project was to have all the sounds used be based off Windows XP samples.

I will try playing the game more later on. I guess right now it just feels a bit too punishing due to the controls but the aesthetic of the game is really charming. I guess in the future if there's not enough time to properly playtest, its better to make the levels and game too easy than to be potentially too hard which was the approach I went.

Developer(+1)

Thank you !

Oh I hadn't seen that, but that was to expect, it wasn't that original of an idea... Yeah I get that a lot, I really can't make levels that aren't too hard... Bit of a shame, I made a totally different thing for the third level but I doubt many people will want to try  too much to get there...

Yeah maybe i'll rework that if I feel like it, right now i'll just leave this aside and test games.

Thanks again for the feedback !

Very cool idea. Loved the things clippy says, that passive agressive piece of metal
Couldn't get past the first level tho, found it too hard, but that might've been just me
Good job!

Developer

Thanks !

Haha yeah that was the goal (clippy, not the difficulty)

Yeah that's not too surprising, everyone struggles, i just can't make levels that aren't too hard...

Submitted(+1)

Hahah I think that is very common! When you are making a game, and playtesting while doing so, you will always be way more competent at the game then the player, which can lead to really difficult levels
Maybe send the game to a friend to test next time, that's what helped me balance the difficulty in my game

Love the interpretation of the theme here and the Windows 95 aesthetic is great!

Thanks !
