Great worked, the atmosphere is awesome. I wish there was a bit more challenges to balance composture, money and menu. But these are great ideas, I had a good time creating my menu and exploring the composture levels.

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Yeah the actual numbers were all just first draft and very little testing went into it since we only actually implemented it properly on the last day. I wish we had more time, hopefully gonna work on it on a post jam update! Thank you for playing! :)

Haha someone else did a coffee shop game! Nice! I also like visual novels where you serve coffee or drinks ^^

Really cute graphics and sound design, the game loop is a bit simple but everything works pretty great. There are indeed some weirdery with the dialogues where you can start serving even if they're not finished talking and even if there are no clients hehe...

The dialogues are great, though. They're fun to read and add quite a nice depth to the character we play! Well done!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I'm glad to see another coffee shop game, yours is on my to play list and I can't wait to explore it! I'm glad you enjoyed our game! :)

Developer

Ooh, what a coincidence! Unfortunately we didn't have time to work on the delay between a customer leaving and a new one entering, but I'm glad to know you liked it! I'll be definitely checking out your cafe game as well!

Submitted(+1)

Really cute game idea ! I love the story behind it and character choice. The art is really nice as well. If you work on it some more i think a full screen button would be good to include, also some animations of the different flavors or toppings coming out of taps would be satisfying! maybe diff customers, but obvs only so much time in a game jam to get stuff done ! Lovely concept and atmosphere well done!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! A lot of what you mentioned was in our brainstorm phase, especially unique NPC customers with events, like one that orders something else than a pumpkin spice latte which makes Saigon SUPER happy but once the player brews his coffee and Saigon returns, he's out of the store and can't be served. Cute little comedic events like that! I'd love the opportunity to implement them, maybe we'll put some time into it, but I think it's more effort than the team's willing to do for a post-jam update.

Hopefully the experience we learnt here means fun little things like that are more possible for future jams!! :D

Submitted(+1)

Yeah its hard to work on stuff post jam sometimes once the deadline motivation is gone! are you thinking to join a longer game jam ? I'm keeping my eye out for a good one :) i always over estimate amount of time as well! the details are just so fun to add in but take so much time !

excited to see what you guys come up with next !

Developer

I'm not sure yet, I really liked the GWJ but I feel like a longer one would make me work less per day, and I'd end up with the same problem, just over a longer period of time.. and month longs I don't think I can clear my schedule for. But I'll be in vacation right around the GWJ in November, so I might join that one and actually have a loooooot of time!

Submitted(+1)

aww yeh i get what you mean, im the same way! i think that's why an improve my game jam jam works well.  I guess you have to try a bunch of jam lengths to find whats right for you :) goodluck in GWJ if ya join ! maybe ill sign up for it as well hahah

A nice concept! The art and music are really nice. It’s especially interesting that the game has a story, not just a set of mechanics. I love the sabotaging idea, the main character and the whole setting.

Developer

Thank you! I wish we had more time to implement more story, we had loads written but alas, jam cuts had to happen!

This was lovely!  Great first attempt at game dev, I hope your learned alot from it!  The premise, art, dialogue, and music were all very charming and a joy to interact with.   I love the interactive music, well done putting that together!

A few quick observations:

  1. The Settings button didn't seem to work for me.  It made a feedback SFX but otherwise didn't display anything.
  2. It was possible to begin brewing before the customer dialog was exhausted, I'm not sure if this was causing any issues in the gameplay. At a certain point though, the composure meter would suddenly 40 points rather than the few points at the beginning of the game.
  3. If the Menu Expansion or the Shopping menus are open, it continues to progress the dialog as the player clicks around.

The VOD is linked below, and will be available for 60 days (I apologize if I lose the thread a few times, I started the stream already sleep deprived):

Developer

Hi! Thank you so much for playing our game on stream, I'm super excited to watch the VOD!

For your observations, yes, the settings menu in-game is broken! the main menu one works, but yknow, that's just not viable lol. Yes, the dialogue system doesn't lock the player properly either, we plan to likely update this project and refine it there. The composure meter loss you were experiencing was the hidden "combo" mechanic where the more you serve "correct" drinks, Saigon loses more and more composure, and she needs to serve bad drinks! It's not well communicated in game though, so we definitely want to improve the user experience.

Again, thank you for playing our game!

This was such a heartwarming entry! The whole café setting feels instantly cosy and the character art has real personality. Saigon especially is adorable and makes the experience feel welcoming. I liked how the shop and brewing screens carry that warm brown palette, really tying into the autumnal vibe.

The dialogue also adds a lot of charm, and the little touches like changing moods and debt management give it more depth than expected. I can see the influence from classic Flash era café games, but it’s been given a fun modern spin here. Could easily see this on Newgrounds!

Developer(+1)

I'm glad you enjoyed the game, everything we wanted to put forward you caught on and seemed to enjoy so I'm really happy!! The whole team loves Saigon and we all just want to keep working on her, her design and her story haha

Submitted(+1)

Loved the art in this game, there's actually a decent bit of depth in the dialogue to which makes it feel quite lively. I have a slight feeling someone on the team has had some beef with people buying a few too many pumpkin spice lattes!

Developer

Haha yeah, we maaaaay have an ex starbucks barista in our dev team! lol

Submitted(+1)

that would be cool!

Submitted(+1)

A very original concept and a chilled out experience. I really liked the dialogue system and I was looking at something like that for a project that I am thinking about so I might come grovelling for advise.

Great entry👍

Developer(+1)

Would be honoured to share notes, if you ever have questions ask me on discord or here and I’ll ask the programmer who did it!

Submitted(+1)

That’s cool thanks 🙏

What a cute game!! Something about it is nostalgic and reminds me of games I would play online as a kid. The dialog is charming, and the music subtly changing as the MC gets more tired is a great touch as well. I'd love to see what this could be with a little more time put into it after the jam!

Developer

Thank you!! There was a lot of influences from game like Papa’s games from the flash era so I’m super happy this showed! Some members of the team are thinking on working more on this game together after the voting period so I hope we manage to give this game the work it deserves !

Submitted(+1)

Very cozy! I somehow managed to get into debt, not sure how, but managed to stay sane. Also, we had a similar thing with our tutorial being a last minute thing too, so I feel you.

Developer

Thank you for the compliment! The user experience and tutorial could both use a lot of work, it's fairly confusing as is for sure! I'm glad you found it cozy anyhow! :)

Submitted(+1)

your game reminded me of

Pumpkin Spice - White Woman Season by meat crayon.

Developer

Yes, we definitely went with “fall season at starbucks” as the baseline for our idea, which we thought was really funny! A comparison to MeatCanyon is an honour!

Submitted(+1)

nice one y'all!! coffe talk vibes are always welcome! the "mathematical progression" of loosing composure it's well implemented, at the start I was like "am I only loosing 1 point"? but then I saw it makes sense.
congrats guys, I hope you had fun so you continue doing games!

Developer(+1)

i’m glad you enjoyed it! There’s a hidden combo mechanic that was supposed to not be so hidden but we ran out of time to put it in.. I think if the combo was visible it’d be a lot clearer what the “best plays” are and the math gameplay would feel nicer!

The whole team had tons of funs and I’m definitely hoping to join another jam!

Submitted(+1)

Great work on this collaboration! You can tell a lot of love and work has been put to this, great work to the team!

Developer(+1)

Thank you!!

Submitted(+1)

Super fun game! I didn't understand why I lost money by selling coffee that was not pumpkin spice so endded up in giga debt ahah

Developer

Yeah, I wish we had more time to implement  a better user experience but you know how jams are haha

glad you enjoyed the game!

Having a dynamic, custom menu is something that I always found lacking in games like VA-11HALL-a, so glad to see it somewhere else! I also really like artstyle and warm colour palette. Bonus points for the dialogue and some narrative! Very cosy experience, very well done! :)

Developer(+1)

Thank you, these are great compliments, all taken to heart! The team is rejoiced seeing people enjoy the game! I'm looking forward to play yours myself, and everyone else's :D

I LOVE THE DAILOGUE . i like how it doesnt take anything seriously. the artsyle is lovely and so is the music. I have had a smooth gameplay and the menu expansion feature is pretty neat with the mixing of drink types

Developer(+1)

I'm so glad you liked it!!! Sharing your comments with the team, we're pumped to have actually submitted something! We'll definitely play Mushrooming too, looking forward to doing it when I have a little bit more energy!
