One of the best games I played. Simple but you can pass your time to roll the dice :)

In the beginning I did not totally understand (because I have not read anything) but once I got hold of it, it seemed almost too easy. But then I risked more and I quickly lost :D

Loved the game.

I was planning to try the game for just 3 minutes and leave a quick comment, but somehow 30 minutes went by without me noticing!

Really great game—time just flew by while playing.

Fun! But if it had a little more difficulty, it would be great.

This feels like the best game of the jam for me, it's so addictive I could play for hours

Very fun game! Beauty really is something simple <3 only suggestion id have is increasing the screen space the wizards are on instead of them only taking up the top 20% of the screen! Great work!  *this game was live reviewed here:  twitch.tv/gratefulllyivory (will post vod after stream)

cool mechanic, simple and deep gameplay

I loved this a lot. I think you did a really great job implementing the risk. It is not optional and up to the player, but increasing the risk continously is the core of the gameplay loop. And my decisions were not so much about "do I take the risk", but rather: "what is the better risky play"? Risking to get a skull on the dice roll and lose, but preventing damage and therefore, being able to survive another turn  if I do get unlucky with shields? Do I risk to take another extra skull as a reward so I can risk more, or do I play it safe and heal up? But, is this really the safe play or is it risk?

I think this is really well thought through and a great approach in terms of game design. You kept the visuals on a minimum and it totally helped to focus on the core mechanic.

Great work!

Simple yet so much fun and addictive. Loved it!

I was getting absolutely creamed on the first wizard before realizing that the roll results were cumulative.  I had initially thought I was just rolling until I found a combination of dice that you actually wanted to spend your turn casting.  After that epiphany, things made a lot more sense.  I gotta say, I was completely caught off guard by that wizard getting yeeted off the tower (in the best way possible, of course).

Balance wise, it feels like there should still be some intermediary punishment for rolling skulls.  Otherwise, it seems like the play is to just roll until you have only one free skull slot remaining and then fire it off. Late game, this kind of fixes itself by way of multiple skull dice.  In that case, you really do have to care about whether the risk of hitting a ton of skulls all at once (and subsequently bonking) is worth some added stats on the spell.

I also liked the art, sound, and animation on the dice.  I'm also a fan of Die in the Dungeon, and I think the color and sprite style really paid homage to that.

Overall a fun little game!  I wouldn't have guessed it was your first jam submission.

PS: Glad you eked out a submission before the deadline!  My submission was at about 8 minutes after scrambling to get all the buttons in the UI to do the right thing.

This was really fun! Nice simple concept and great artwork. I really liked the idea and implementation on the wizards getting pushed back and flying off the platform when you win. It felt like there was maybe one more mechanic needed, or slightly different balance early on to require you to take some risks. I could kind of play it safe grabbing +skull upgrades and dice without skulls and just be patient with a lot of rolling.

The idea is really cool, I've never played anything like this before. I thought it was innovative and very clever!

This is a great idea for a game! There’s a solid prototype here, I made it to battle 12 when I got unlucky and rolled 4 skull dice. The dice-rolling animation looked really cool. I’d say you could shorten the wait time between rolls a bit, since you do it a lot in this game. I wasn’t much of a fan of the ‘microwave’ sound when there’s one skull left, the beep felt a little out of place.

But overall, really good game, super fun and a great fit for the jam theme. Congrats

Thank you, and thanks for the feedback :)

Absolutely love the game! Such a clever take on the rogue like deck builder. At first I thought it was a little easy and then the mode die I added that more intense it got. The art style is really cool too. Good Job! 🤗🤗

That was absolutely amazing. From giggling to watching a wizard just fly off the screen, to realizing that actual stakes were involved once the upgrades started to have skulls themselves, I had a great time An absolute diamond of a game, great work!

Damn a hidden gem, simple and effective, I was gonna play forever but sadly the 13th wizard blasted me (I rolled too many skulls). Would love if you had screen shake when u get blasted, and when they shield the shield number shows up on top of the hp instead of disapearing.
Great Work, loved your game!

The battles were really fun and I enjoyed the concept so dang much, roguelikes are always pretty fun and you executed this roguelike very well, nice job!

Developer

Thank you, yeah I have a full-blown rogue-like addiction at this point so thought I should try making one :)

Wow! This is super addictive and an absolute gem! Amazing work, perfectly fits the theme in such a small yet engaging package, great work :)

(also the beep sound when at 2/3 skulls sounds like my microwave)

Developer(+1)

Thank you! Yeah I literally recorded my microwave beeping about half an hour before the deadline haha

Very nice game! I'm glad you kept the scope down, seeing as you only managed to submit a few minutes before the deadline! :D I love Die in the Dungeon and Slay the Spire - both games you mentioned as inspiration.

Overall, I enjoyed myself, but the battles got very grindy. The risky strat of taking new dice with more skull chances seems to heavily weight in favor of a sudden backfire, but the safer strats got way too grindy with only low rolling dice.

I'm not sure how you got the screenshot for floor 20 - maybe I just needed to get better luck on the rewards and earn more skull slots? I hope you continue. Some new dice ideas would be some kind of boosts and multipliers for attack and damage. Different styles of attack like venom, fire, or lightning could also have their own attack values and boost or nerf other types.

Developer

Thank you, yeah the balancing definitely needs some work, to get far at the moment you kind of just need to avoid 6 sided dice until you've got the max skull upgrades. But you can just get super unlucky on the RNG. Thanks for playing and thanks for the ideas/feedback :)
