About the Collective Shout Nonsense

Collective Shout, an extremist anti-pornography group, has been on a bit of a tear lately working with other organizations to pressure payment processors and merchants by extension to remove adult content. Often relying on misinformation about the titles in question.

I just want to say I encourage Itch to push back against such pressure if these groups and their nonsense show up at the digital doorstep.

Adult content deserves a platform, and these organizations and payment processors shouldn't be given this kind of censorship power without pushback.

If all fails I would rather have to deal with using Cashapp or something to pay for games here than give any more ground to these weirdos.

And best believe, this kind of harassment will certainly evolve into calls for further censorship. It's how these political groups operate.

(+13)

Site owners have the hands-tied with this issue, also, this isn't the first time something like this happened, about two years ago they did the same thing, but instead targeting steam, they targeted this place (through payoneer); my bet is that Subscribestar will be the next one.

(+48)

Definitely agreed that I'd like to see alternative payment processors first before seeing itch being forced to self-censor. Pornographic and explicit content is not illegal to purchase or distribute, and has a right to exist. I would like to fight for those rights wherever possible.

(2 edits) (+39)

Alternative payment processors, counter petitioning and counter social media campaigning to pressure payment processors to not listen to them, or even legal action if it comes to that. There's already related ACLU petitions for similar discrimination https://action.aclu.org/petition/mastercard-sex-work-work-end-your-unjust-policy (Good to sign if you're a US citizen, and can reasonably cover this too, 74k out of 100k signatures needed so far), and now also a change.org petition targeting visa and mastercard for exactly this, https://www.change.org/p/tell-mastercard-visa-activist-groups-stop-controlling-w... . The petition they responded to didn't have that many signatures even, its entirely possible to garner more to try and counter them.

Pressuring payment processors in any way possible to ignore them is important, to make sure the loonies aren't the only voice that gets a say. If nothing else it shows that's not the only pressure effecting their business. Never mind the question of whether these things could classify for an antitrust lawsuit, or that there's some level of investigation reportedly happening in the Japanese government

Moreover, if there was ever a time to take a stand, its now when everyone is already pissed off about the steam stuff. Makes it easier to rally them

(+12)

can I add this act that was just introduced this year on Congress.gov that might help?  maybe send this to people in your state's gov that could look into this as something to pass or push for?

also dose anyone think that maybe Itchio might want to make a points like system that is used on another site called DL-site with their DL Gift Card from forbooks? I feel like that if the gov is not gonna do anything, we should at least create a work around for this problem.

you can disagree with me if you want but I am currently writing out an idea for the latter part because I am willing to pay with points if that can help the site not be dependent on payment processors and merchants.

(+13)

Its rather suspicious that its 43 cosponsors are all republican though, given their side are the ones pushing this, to begin with. I dont trust they dont have an ulterior motive, or that they wouldn't subtly exclude nsfw content from it, especially given it seems aimed heavily at firearms, crypto, fossil fuel, and religious businesses

(+8)

The ulterior motive is this sort of payment neutrality also means hate groups can't be blocked by payment processors unless the actively do illegal shit.

You kinda have to make that judgement call if you think that's an acceptable cost for keeping porn from being censored.

Of course, there's nothing stopping these payment processors from continuing to ban porn while allowing hate groups to exchange funds as tolerating hate has recently become more popular. It's entirely their whim we're up to.

It's a shitty situation to make a choice on, but personally I don't like all of this being subject to the whims of private companies who can be swayed by a thousand weirdos. That's just madness making.

(+10)

The extreme left wants to take our guns and the extreme right want to take our porn. I'll smack a bitch with a sword but give me my porn games damn it.

(+2)

I've been called far left before and its odd because I support the right to bear arms and similar items. I also agree with some of the United States of America's founding fathers in that "No book, no matter how aggregious, should be banned"  I guess people see what they want to see.

Personally I feel that an adult should be able to read erotic fiction or play erotic games. Maybe its time to go after these censorship groups. I'm sure the skeletons in their closet are pretty bad.

(+11)

It isn't just born, that's the problem. They went after games like Detroit and GTA. By their labels, games like Silent Hill can also be blocked from purchase. NSFW covers MULTIPLE topics, not just sexual.

(+1)

One of the issues is that it covers no-/low-risk purchases and erotica has always been considered high-risk - it may not require payment processors to cover adult content.

(1 edit) (+8)

*sigh* Please do NOT force us to use CashApp, doing so would prevent a significant number of people in certain countries from buying the games we want!

(+22)

Unfortunately, Itch is already censoring games and preventing us from buying the games we want, as a result of the payment processors the site does have.

A move to something like CashApp would prevent UK users, for example, from buying games (something the UK Government is already trying to do with the Online Safety Act) but the alternative is that these orgs push for bans on all content they dislike.

These are the orgs that tried to force OF to ban Adult Content. They don't care about the site being able to function, they'll happily see the internet shut down first.

(+29)

Listening to anything "Collective Shout" says is just moronic as just like many more extremist groups there's a ton of hypocrisy.  "They pride themselves on defending sexualization of women and girls"

However they actively supported Netflix's "Cuties" which i feel like that alone is enough to invalidate anything they say. Supporting Cuties you might as well just say "Yes i support Sexualization of minors" as that's largely what "Cuties" did.

Listening to any org without checking their past is dumb and Collective Shout more than deserves raising a eyebrow at and not listening to more than you'd listen to a screaming toddler.

(1 edit) (+29)

Its funny how they hide behind "Its for the children's safety and its to stop men from abusing women cause video games makes them violent" when all they really care about is censorship. Disgusting behavior from collective shout, who openly defended the movie "Cuties" by the way.

(+3)

They do not go after female romance novels. do research on what they are all about.

(+5)

Except those have been included in what they want taken down. Google is free.

(+3)

People really want to make it look like this is some  hashtag gamergate feminazi group and not a pretty transparent veil over typical satanic panic fare pushed by conservative christians.

They not weirdos, that is a term often used against powerless people, they are powerful. The have been on a censorship tear since 2008, and they are gaining traction.

Awareness needs to raised against these people, there needs to be pushback against them, all spaces must be gatekept against anti porn feminists.

(+10)

And feminist wonder why young men and men in general are becoming anti-feminist and being anti-woman and flock to RP, man0sphere, walking their own way, and viewing and3w t@te, and F&F content and spaces. Collective shout is creating the very same thing they were trying to avoid and prevent.

(+23)

This isn't the attitude of most feminists, that's just weird GGer rhetoric.

No, these are weirdos. There was an event in political history called the feminist sex wars where most people took pretty normal attitudes about things and then a group of hardliners with dogshit opinions decided sex workers were "hurting the cause" and porn was "inherently degrading towards women". These people ended up teaming up with Christian extremists to push anti-porn laws, but have been an increasingly shrinking political fringe group most people don't take seriously in feminist spaces or are actively hostile towards in those spaces.

It's why the group was only able to get about a thousand people internationally to commit to this call and email campaign; because they're fucking losers.

BUT this group carries on the tradition of working with extremist Christian lobbying groups that are much larger. Also probably helps the group is weirdly anti-abortion, which is a hot take that will get you in DEEP shit with most feminists.

In feminist circles, these people are called SWERFs. Sex Exclusionary Radical Feminists. The group also works with a publication that are called TERFs, Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminists. These people are not welcome in most modern feminist circles. They are, however, really fucking loud and really willing to work with far right groups to signal boost their bullshit.

Which is to say, this isn't a reason men are going down alt-right type pipelines. It never has been. And most people would love if SWERFs would shut the fuck up. We're in this hell together.

(+1)

"really willing to work with far right groups to signal boost their bullshit"

Because they are the same. I have no problem to work with myself.

I agree with everything but the last paragraph:

"Which is to say, this isn't a reason men are going down alt- right type pipelines. It never has been."

That is simply not true. There are plenty feminist that are spiteful and misandristic, that openly mock if men decide to show vulnerability. They absolutely contribute to that pipeline, and it is a problem. Men need to call misogynistic crap out in their own group, women must do the same, or else it becomes a perpetual cycle and the culture war just festers further. That's a responsibility we *all* have.

And claiming 'collective shout' is just a brilliant move by the far right, a trojan horse that achieves their goal for them and -as seen by the original reply- fans the culture war, distracting from themselves even further.

(+8)

This IS what they want, these creeps want more chaos like the things you mentioned. They are feeding on that to get their censorship agenda momentum. They've been backed by the same groups and organizations that rescued the former Romanian felon. It's all a front to drum up outrage and ban adult content. It's just the new Satanic Panic moral purity nonsense.

(+10)

Honey, this group is backed by Republicans. It's not feminists doing it. Get off reddit and stop taking the red pill-which is a trans allegory anyway.

(1 edit) (+1)

they are feminist because if you look at their webpage its littered with misandry. Also there is nothing republican or conservative about this group, because they just took their twitter page private since they got blasted and ratioed because the main member of the group tried to defend the movie "cuties" there's no defending that movie lol.

(+6)

Feminism is anti-misandry you absolute pillock

as a trans woman... no. i felt depressed when i was living as a guy, but this is because i had dysphoria all the time. on the whole my quality of life was substantially better if we leave out, yk, the depression caused by dysphoria. you arent entitled to other peoples' attention if youre a prick, and if i had to guess people see you saying things like this and go, "huh, this sounds like the kind of person who'd do a hate crime or sexual assault, because they feel they're entitled to my respect and admiration without having done anything to earn it, which means theyll likely get upset if i fail to provide it, and their standards wont be satisfied by me having reasonable boundaries", and they would back away slowly.

(+6)

Hey so yeah, this is just sexist nonsense.

I only engaged on the hope that people were just unaware of the lore and internal struggles of these movements, but you're just spouting bigoted crap in bad faith and ignoring literally the entire brief history lesson I tried to provide to sit in that hate.

And for the record, Collective Shout received support from Republican based religious extremists orgs as well as similar international conservative orgs during this recent campaign, particularly Morality in Media (renamed for propaganda reasons to National Center on Sexual Exploitation). Collective Shout is also aggressively anti-abortion.

Which, I already explained the history of why SWERFs are joined at the hip to conservative anti-porn groups. But I figure I'll add that clarification of the facts for anyone reading, because you have a clear and frankly hateful agenda that I'm not going to discourage you from.

That's a comparison in poor taste.

(1 edit)

So first, obviously I personally don't think Collective Shout is Feminist, they're anti-abortion, they're control freaks who want to control how both women and men act regarding sexuality. The issue I have is whether or not something or someone is Feminist can vary wildly depending on the individual.

While Collective Shout will not elicit much debate because they are mostly control freaks very much not wanting to give freedom to any gender, thus a vast majority of Feminists will easily agree that CS are not Feminists, the point you raised on misandry would very much not garner the same widespread approval.

I'd argue a significant part of Feminism is anti-misandry, but clearly the movement has had and still has its part of people acclaiming misandry. That's one of the issues I have with the movement, the definition of what is Feminist and what isn't is different for each individual, and while I do think a vast majority of people identifying with this movement have good intentions, the word "Feminism" can be claimed by a wide array of people who can have conflicting ideas on important subjects; and some people will proclaim that one thing is not Feminism, while others will proclaim it is Feminism.

(+2)

Every group has its good and bad players. CS seems like a crazy hybrid of extreme feminists and extreme Christians......o_o

(1 edit) (+7)

if you haven't signed this petition I encourage everyone to sign it.

www.change.org/p/tell-mastercard-visa-activist-groups-stop-controlling-what-we-c...

(+19)

They are a fascistic group. Antihuman and antifreedom. And somehow they managed to have control over payment processors. Now they even managed to get this website all fucked up. We will just have to sit and wait until someone with an actual brain and power steps in and stops this nonsense. Fuck collective shit.

(+10)

i use itch.io almost exclusively for nsfw content. if they remove that part of their business, they are losing myself and a no doubt considerable subsection of their customer base.

(+4)

Honestly its weird that the open letter only used that one game as an example and said that "A" (meaning one) "A Collective Shout team member has conducted extensive research using a Steam account set up for this purpose." they reference "hundreds of other games featuring rape, incest and child sexual abuse on both Steam and Itch.io." but its all "too distressing for us to make public." but then drop the name and description of a game literally called "No Mercy"

(+6)

also could people with a political following use this as a rallying call say idk for leftist: "this is just project 2025 with pretty flowers"  or "first its this then its sex work" and for righties: "this is just a bunch of Extremist feminist pissed off that guys are playing video games" or "this goes against your freedom" to get more eyes on this that be great

(+4)

I'm glad both sides are fighting against this, even if it's for different reasons. We should all come together and just agree that censorship of any kind is just bad for everyone. I'm an adult, I want to enjoy my M rated games, movies, books and animes. :(

Legal advice says FUCKING NO and you should probably delete this.

(+2)

Get your edgelord ass out of here. A lot of us are frustrated, but that isn't the way to solve it.

What did he say?

Nothing good.

(+10)

Practically speaking, encouraging everyone still watching this thread to especially call and contact Stripe today. Be polite, but tell them you'll be avoiding their services if they continue making it difficult for customers to make legal purchases.

(+3)

I am enraged. I primary use it h in stuff for my gooning needs and anti-mainstream stuff that more hidden than hidden treasure. Now what?

(+2)

Join the people calling and emailing payment processors to complain. Politely mind, but still complaining.

(+8)

everyone should write to the DOJ under anti-trust laws, and as well as the other payment processing companies if we can flood their inbox like collective karens can then we can revert this. remember there is more of us then their are of them.

(!!)Most importantly(!!), those in the USA should consider contacting their Congressmen (phone or email) and tell them you want to support these bills:

https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/senate-bill/401

https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/987

I would urge them to support it, and even urge them to strengthen the wording of it to put more restrictions on credit card companies, not just banks. ( How to find your congressman[www.congress.gov] )

Then, I think those in the USA should contact the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and file a complaint. Doing this next is good, as its the most consumer focused:

Phone: 1-855-411-2372

Mail: Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, 1700 G Street NW, Washington, DC 20552

Following that, submit a detailed complaint detailing the issues to the DOJ’s Antitrust Division or FTC:

You can use an AI to help you draft letters easily (Microsoft Copilot requires no sign-in). I've put physical addresses too because although it represents a big commitment of effort, few things get their message through better than a written letter.

This is not an end-all-be-all list, but I think its a pretty good starting point. I understand a lot of this represents an uncomfy amount of effort, but really, wouldn't it be an insane spectacle if Visa or MasterCard literally got broken up all because they messed with some erogames on Steam? Imagine that going down in history.

(+1)

yeah itch.io and Steam are just the tip of the iceberg. Comics and webtoons could be targeted next for having "questionable" content.

(+1)

they already have targeted comics and webtoons. have you seen how woke the comics have gotten in the US in marvel, DC, star wars, etc? they also went after manga and anime in japan saying censor this or make the dialog more progressive or we pull payment processing.

(+7)

#SKAG #StopKillingAdultGames

(+3)

Markslowder136 I agree  stop killing adult content because that's what It will  go to it won't just be games it'll be these comics and webtoons and movies and TV shows and artwork.

(+2)

有些游戏即使没有NSFW元素,依然有着出色的剧情和玩法,老资本家们所做的就是抹去艺术和创作。

I'm not surprised that they don't have that many signatures. I signed the petition, but the confirmation process broke, so they never reeived my signature.

(+3)

that's unfortunate. For every important issue, another one gets overlooked. People only have so much time and attention, and Stop Killing Games and VShojo and the UK age verification stuff are all headliners

(+3)

A helpful site with a bunch of information for making calls, contacting politicians, and otherwise endeavoring to reverse this atrocious policy by payment processors if not prevent it from happening again.

https://stop-paypros.neocities.org/

great!!

(+5)

Censorship should not be allowed. This, the UK safety omline act, its all nonsense and we must stand up to it

(+5)

A lot of games in itch.io are NSFW too, what will be left to sell for them? Does itch.io want to lose the majority of their vendors and customers and end up like Tumblr?

These Collective Shout nuisances aren't even feminists, they're Christian fundies in disguise. They should stay in their own bubble and leave the rest of the world be.

(+1)

If they also attack Sticky Business, I curious how they losing their mind over a game about making stickers.

(+1)

itch.io still attracts a lot of developers who come onto the site just to do charity bundles.

(+1)

Collective Shout  This organization thinks they can defend their rights, but this is actually a blow to the gaming industry. If all 18+ games are removed from the shelves, then everyone's energy will be put into violent games, such as the game of the Columbine school shooting, which led to hundreds of school shootings.

(+1)

Call Payment processors and take as much time as possible (This is the solution).

The reason phone call complaints are effective with these payment processor companies is because it takes up valuable time that the company could be otherwise dealing with other issues.  Phone support is expensive and slow, which makes it an ideal pressure point  A large public outcry is what causes companies to pay attention and consider backtracking.

Make a script about why this is bad (payment processor companies shouldn't be censoring legal material because they personally think it's immoral and it's an attack on free speech - you can ask AI to create a script for you if you don't have to time to write a long message) then call VISA/MasterCard/STRIPE/Paypal, you'll be on hold for a while because everyone is calling, and say you'd like to lodge a complaint.  Then when they ask what this is in regards to, just start reading your script.  The longer the better since that's the point.  We essentially have to keep this up for the next few weeks if we want something to happen.  We don’t need to be aggressive - just persistent. Keep the pressure on and call every few days, or every day if you care about this issue.

The following link has all the contact information you need to call them:

https://10kphonecalls.com/

Service reps will now try to quickly escort you to "e-mailing" instead once they realize you're complaining about itch and Steam's recent censorship - try to just keep them on the line.  In one call when they attempted to do this, I simply asked, "Are phone call complaints reported to your company or not?" and they just kept repeating "You must e-mail _________" - I was like, "You're not answering my questions, do you report them or not?" and eventually they transferred me to a supervisor who was really awesome to talk to and spent a long time talking to me..  Asking them about why companies are attempting to ban legal content is also a good question that they can't answer but will keep them on the line for a while.

(+1)

We should ddos and target there website, find where they live and scare them!

(+2)

Itch should do what DLsite (a doujishi/ hentai site) does. They have giftcards you can buy off this like, bookstore site? And you can then use the serial codes to add points to your account to buy stuff. Since its not being purchaced directly it gets mastercard off their backs

(+2)

Easier said than done, but not the worst idea. It's.... complicated.

Collective Shout deserves to be booed and mocked
